vcdarty Posted November 27, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 27, 2012 (or whatever the correct term might be for the envelope thingie that the line provides to contain the travel documents). On past HAL cruises--the latest three or four years ago--we received the docs in a handsome blue cloth container. This year, in a grey cardboard envelope. Just an accident, or more budget issues? candbgirl Posted November 27, 2012 #2 Share Posted November 27, 2012 I'm surprised you got anything tangible from HAL. My last two cruises on HAL I've gotten edocs and had to print out what I wanted (including luggage tags.)

J The blue pleather or cloth document holders have been gone for a number of years. Apparently there are or were a few travel agencies or agents who had a stock every so often somebody reports they've gotten one but Holland America no longer provides them. With more and more people downloading their documents directly from Holland America's website the days of mailing are almost at an end.
surfsidemary Posted November 27, 2012 #4 Share Posted November 27, 2012 I received the blue cloth one in 2010, 2011 and 2012, but the documents did come through my travel agent and she had added the documents for air/hotel, etc. I never thought about it but the document envelope may have come from the TA and not from HAL. Typhoon1 Posted November 27, 2012 #5 Share Posted November 27, 2012 E docs are the wave of the future. We still find the old cloth types around the house containing various paperwork.

Cruise prn Posted November 27, 2012 #8 Share Posted November 27, 2012 I miss those days. Receiving the physical documents was a very important component of the Doc Dance ritual.

vicocala Posted November 27, 2012 #10 Share Posted November 27, 2012 I still use the pleather one I got seven years ago. I find it very useful to seperate tickets, passports, and other travel papers. I agree that it is a shame that we no longer have that excitement of running to the mailbox and having the documents in hand. So many companies, not just the cruiselines, suppossedly in the name of saving the environment cause us to print out everything. Does it save the environment? Of course not. Just another way to pass on costs to the consumer for paper, ink and printer, let alone internet costs. I do love my pleather one and remember at the time folks were complaining because they weren't real leather anymore. The more things change, the more they stay the same. oofroggie Posted November 27, 2012 #11 Share Posted November 27, 2012 They only give them out for Grand voyages and they are the blue material ones. I also have saved all the old pleather ones and the new material ones and use them when I do e-docks to keep all my papers and info together. dobiemom Posted November 27, 2012 #14 Share Posted November 27, 2012 I found one at a thrift store earlier this year. GF couldn't figure out why I was so happy! :D
innlady1 Posted November 27, 2012 #15 Share Posted November 27, 2012 I kept one of the blue satin document holders...we had them from 2007 to perhaps 2009 or '10...since then, the e-docs. I miss the anticipation of waiting for them to come via snail mail.
vcdarty Posted November 27, 2012 Author #16 Share Posted November 27, 2012 To KrazyKruisers: we booked through our private TA who'd given the blue cloth holders years ago. No more, I guess. Although another line that we enjoy still does an elegant green leather holder. But for how long? J
Rare sunviking90 Posted November 28, 2012 #17 Share Posted November 28, 2012 I also still use my blue pleather one from our first HAL cruise years ago. I use it for all vacations, not just cruises. I love it:)
