Aldeya Posted December 23, 2012 #1 Share Posted December 23, 2012 We are sailing Westerdam in a week in a cat SS cabin. We usually book a verandah, this time booked a cat.SS. I did a seach on this board but found very few posts about this category, most of them dated 2006-2009. We knew from the beginning that we will not be "allowed" to use Neptune Lounge which is fine with us. This will be our first cruise with HAL. I need all help I can get:D So any tips about this category SS cabin will be much appreciated.
Typhoon1 Posted December 23, 2012 #2 Share Posted December 23, 2012 We have been in a SS on one of the Vistas. You will find the additional room to be a real plus. Compared to other veranda cabins the additional space will come in handy. 372-384 sq. feet.

We knew from the beginning that we will not be "allowed" to use Neptune Lounge which is fine with us. This will be our first cruise with HAL. I need all help I can get:D So any tips about this category SS cabin will be much appreciated. We have sailed in SS category on the. Zuiderdam, Nieuw Amsterdam and the Eurodam. Quite simply, it has become our preferred choice of cabin. It has a great deal of living space as well as more than enough storage space. There are two basins in the bathroom which is a big deal for us. In addition to the bathtub/shower combo there is a free standing shower which is worth its weight in gold to us. We have tried a deluxe suite but found the Neptune Lounge wasn't enough to justify the extra cost. The balcony is proportionately larger in an SS suite. We like the SS suites so much that my husband refuses to sail in the R and S class ships now because they do not have that category. When we were up sold to our first SS, my husband told me to enjoy it but not to get too used to it. In fact, it was he who got hooked. Not that I minded. :D
vicocala Posted December 23, 2012 #4 Share Posted December 23, 2012 The best thing about it is it is the Westerdam! Please see my review today, I highly recommend this ship!
sapper1 Posted December 23, 2012 #5 Share Posted December 23, 2012 I should also add the warning not to book an adjoining cabin as you lose closet space. The door replaces a closet.
SwissMyst Posted December 24, 2012 #6 Share Posted December 24, 2012 We think the SS (etc) is the best size and layout of all HAL cabin choices -larger everything, but less than the full Neptune Lounge suites. There was really nothing not to like.
PathfinderEss Posted December 24, 2012 #7 Share Posted December 24, 2012 The SS cabins are great. Really nice size, will give you plenty of room to spread out, lots of closet space. Those cabins are in the center of the ship, and just a short walk up to the Lido. Enjoy your cruise.
Aldeya Posted December 24, 2012 Author #8 Share Posted December 24, 2012 Thank you all for your responses. I'm sure we'll like the extra space:D Any special perks which are included with this category?
NetwrkEng Posted December 24, 2012 #9 Share Posted December 24, 2012 The SS cabins are a very nice size but be aware that depending on where you are they can be noisy. We had 8052 a couple of weeks ago and you would be amazed at how often the furniture on the Lido deck needs to be "arranged". For that reason we prefer the SY cabins on 6 to the SS on 8. George C Posted December 24, 2012 #10 Share Posted December 24, 2012 We had a SS on Westerdam in Nov 2010 and loved it, only negative was there was a little noise from pool chairs being moved around when on the balconey, but I still loved the suite plenty of room , huge bathroom with double sinks etc etc

I agree with this. I am looking at booking an SY on Westerdam for this reason. DaveOKC
SwissMyst Posted December 24, 2012 #12 Share Posted December 24, 2012 We heard the furniture scraping in ours only late in the afternoon for just a short while. I was picturing the crew cleaning the decks surrounding the pool but never went up to look what was going on. It did not interrupt anything and was soon over. It was nice to just go up one flight of stairs to get to the Lido and two to get to the CrowsNest and Library.
bphman Posted December 24, 2012 #13 Share Posted December 24, 2012 We have an SZ guar. for Jan. 6 on the Westerdam. Haven't gotten our assignment yet. We did a Deluxe on the Maasdam and thought it was great. We got a great deal for the SZ so anything will be an upgrade. Can't wait to see where we will be living. bphman Posted December 24, 2012 #14 Share Posted December 24, 2012 Just got our assignment. SS8065. Love the location although we may have some noise from the Lido deck. Now I can relax.

When I want a Superior Veranda Suite, I'll book a specific SY cabin and mark it "no upgrade."
cmaygar Posted December 24, 2012 #16 Share Posted December 24, 2012 There is a lot more storage space in the SS than in a verandah. Also, there is a double-vanity sink in the bathroom and a separate whirlpool tub and shower. The balcony is also double the size of a regular verandah. I think that you'll like the extra elbow-room! clax1 Posted December 24, 2012 #17 Share Posted December 24, 2012 Just got off "Westy" yesterday after a great cruise. We also were on Deck 8 but in the normal verandah cabins toward the front. Just great with no sounds from above. We were under the Spa.
Valley Girl of VA Posted December 26, 2012 #18 Share Posted December 26, 2012 I have been on her sister ships in a SS category and LOVE it. I like staying a few doors down from the central elevators (always able to catch one), close to Lido and the pool and I love the extra space. jdvmd Posted December 26, 2012 #19 Share Posted December 26, 2012 We had an SZ on the Westerdam and did a cabin crawl. The SS was the same room except two floors up.
