Booking Legend today - help me decide if we should take my Mom

My husband and I along with our 8 year old son are getting ready to book the March 3 sailing on Legend. Oceanview most likely.

My Mom really wants to go with us. We all get along great.

But I'm a little worried aobut 4 people in a cabin being too crowded. Last year was our first cruise with more than just me and hubby. We took our son on Fantasy and he LOVED it. He spent a lot of time in Camp Carnival and in the hot tub :)

I think she could be helpful with our son - especially since he wakes early. And it's not like we're in the cabin much. But what is it like having 4 in a cabin? And if you have a young child, did taking a grandparent help?

Any thoughts?

if it matters - she'd be paying her own way. And the cost per person actually goes down with a 4th person (we'd split the cost evenly).

Could you book an obstructed balcony cabin instead of the oceanview? That would give you a little bit more "elbow room". We've had oceanview cabins with 3 adults (me, DH, and adult DD), and it was fine. We all get along well, and are used to traveling together.

But last year, we had an obstructed balcony on the Legend and loved it. DH could sit out there while DD and I got ready for dinner, or I could sit out there when I woke up earlier than DD and DH, etc.

You're really the only one that can decide if it will work for the 4 of you to share a room.

I did 3 adults in a balcony once. It was a bit cramped. Adding a kid to the mix in an OV? Not me. Could you get a suite? Then there's the bathroom. I've heard some people use the gym showers to get ready for dinner. Good luck whatever you decide.

Please take your mom. The incredible memories for all of you will more than make up for a crowded room.

Mom needs her own room.... maybe your son can stay with her? In my opinion that would not be a good mix in a single cabin for a range of reasons.

I agree! What seems to be a good relationship now could turn sour.:(

Good luck with whatever you decide!

I would take her as well. Before you blink, your mom won't be around to take.

A little different but our family went and had 5 in a cabin. Two parents, then 14, 12 & 10 year old girls.

Crowded - Yes

Bathroom obstructions - Yes

Friction - less often than in our 4-bedroom home

Use the spa shower - I never showered once in our cabin, I used the spa showers which were great.

I wouldn't change a thing - it worked out great for us.

As a grandmother, I ask. You want her to "help" with your son AND pay the same fare as you, hubby and son???? If she can afford it, she should get her own cabin. Then she can spend as much quality time as she wants with the family.

Take your mom... we did on our 1st cruise. She spent more time in the casino',s on lido deck . We never saw her.

Have you thought of a 4K.. its a obst. french door view. Not bad.

Memories last a life time... plus some

We had 3 adults, me, son and daughter in law, plus a 3 and 4 year old in one cabin on the Triumph. Wasn't bad at all. I took them, maybe in the future I will be lucky enough that they will take me. Spread the cost around and everyone can have fun. Grandma will love spending time with you and your son. Generally the only time everyone is in the cabin at the same time is while you're sleeping. They were usually asleep every time I came in!;)

It would not work for us. The only time we have had more than 2 people in a cabin was last year on the legend. We took our family, DS & 3 kids, DD & SI. Our Grandaughter stayed with us in a balcony cabin. The others had their own cabin. You will have the pull down type beds for 2 people with the other beds as twins or queen, that will leave very little room to move around. If you decide to book with 4 in a cabin I would at least get a balcony. I can say as a Grandmother it would not work for me. I need my own space. Everyone is different good luck with whatever you decide.

Is she paying for her fare - if so, book her and grandson in a separate cabin and pay the difference. She can decide if she wants him in her cabin all the time or he can stay in yours with you. Interiors are pretty reasonable. If she is not paying for her share and you are covering it, consider what you can afford and go from there. Is it worth being cramped for one week, as others say there are lots of ways around it. We did 4 adults in a cabin (balcony) - ya, it was cramped but we adjusted, otherwise we would not have been able to cruise - worth the trade off

We (husband, me, 6yo, 7 grandma) just went on a cruise in an inside. Cramped yes, but sooooo worth it. I agree with the poster that talked about getting an inside with french door on Legend. With savings from OV you might even be able to get two cabins. Maybe even joining. But take grandma. My mom even watched my son one day while hubby and I went on an excursion. Son loves Camp Carnival so he stayed there most of the day. My Mom and son are my usual cruising companions so my husband was the new one in the room. We didn't have any problems with the crowding. I can't stress enough - TAKE GRANDMA :D.

I would see if you could do 2 cabins. I couldn't imagine having 4 people in a cabin. DH and I went on the Fantasy in October and left the 2 kids at home with the grandparents. I couldn't imagine all of us in one cabin.

PS. We live in Concord too and we have another website (CPM) in common. Small internet world!

I'm not a grandmother and I was thinking the same thing, Shonuf.

I would suggest a balcony. While others did talk about the crunch of 4 people trying to get ready for dinner - all needing the bathroom at the same time, etc., it really is not that big of an issue.

The one thing that was not mentioned was: sometimes even adults get on each others' nerves, and ... you need a spot you can send someone to for time-out with their glass of wine. That is what the balcony is for. Lovely and sound-insulated out there, and they can mutter away to their hearts content for an hour or two. OK, well if you don't want to send them to time-out, then you can take your glass of wine and ignore the sulky-Sue who is now in bed in the middle of the afternoon. :D

4 people in a cabin has not been a problem for us. (DH, DS, DD and myself). But we all get along, enjoy spending time together, and understand that the space will be a little cramped (we always book an oceanview). Sharing with grandmom of course is a different situation, then just parents and kids. It totally depends on your relationship and your (and her) expectations.

If she asked you really can't tell her no can you ? People are pointing out the obvious, two cabins would be better, Duh. That wasn't the question, the question was about 4 people in a room. Crowded yes, but it's not going to be so bad to ruin you're cruise. The happiness you bring your mom will out way any minor inconveniences you might incur. As far as getting ready for dinner, formal night is the only real night you have to worry about, worry is prolly the wrong word but, anyway. Most men ( boys ) can get ready in ten minutes, so the boys can go grab a soda or something while the lady's get ready first, not that big a deal. You won't Be in the room that much, primarily sleeping. Take you're mom.

I don't know how you folks do it?

Getting along great is one thing but sharing a bedroom with my husband and a child is bad enough!

Sharing a bedroom with my husband, a childand my mother would be really impossible!

How will you have any privacy???

OP here

We decided not to bring my Mom for several reasons. The only oceanview cabins that were available were right under the nightclub. The balcony cabins that are available will add to our costs for the three of us. We already spend a lot of time with Mom - My son is with her a lot since she lives only 45 minutes away. AND she has credit card debt that she needs to work on and has no business paying $ for a cruise. I know that's not our decision to make but she knows she needs to work on it.

We decided that we'll plan further in advance next year and find a cruise for us, Mom and my sister in law and brother in law.

Thanks for all the advice though!
