Triumph has lost propulsion!!

A few years ago DH and I had a similar situation.

We were sailing from Mobile.

When we got ready to pull into the parking garage we were given a paper stating that there were propulsion problems and that one port would be eliminated.

Or you could cancel.

So we had about a minute to decide before we paid for parking and were committed.

At that point though we were going on a cruise.

So we got to Cozumel late.

I don't remember exactly, but by the time you could get off the ship it was about 6pm and raining.

Carnival kept talking up how wonderful it was to be staying overnight blah, blah, blah.

But the next day you had to be back on board by 12 noon.

It was a good deal if you wanted to hang out in a bar all night I guess.

It didn't bother us excessively having a five day cruise to almost nowhere as we love sea days the best anyway.

Just to let y'all know in advance what the port day may be like.

Omg, I remember that melee. That was sooo bad. The video is still probably floating around somewhere in cyberspace.

Wasn’t Uncle Bob at the helm back then, and weren’t the main culprits who organized the disastrous compromise of safety on the ship banned from Carnival for life because of it?

This protest? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm0sIlNj4VE

Hey stranger! Where've you been hiding? A blast from the past.

You know, there's been so many ( although none recently) but I'm wondering if you are referring to the topless man. And then there was one where Host Mach and Firefly were trying to take it upon themselves to calm everyone down as if they were Carnival employees. It may have even been the same one, but I've lost track, as well as grey matter. :D

Of course, it could all be coincidence, but all these propulsion problems have me wondering if they have cut back on routine maintenance to save $

What would you consider routine maintainance? How does one know what's going to break down before it happens?

All ships get beaten to death never shutting down 24/7. Your car would break down too.

I wonder if these ships were made at one particular shipyard using one brand of parts.

hey, Pete. Hope you've been keeping injury-free from those pesky seahorses. ;)

LOL to the carnival employees. I didn't read that one. Must have been during my absence.

The one I am thinking of is not that one. It was even before Mach was a host (is he even still, never even checked, lol). I think it was a cruise that forced the cancellation of several, maybe all, ports due to hurricane force winds. Some of the pax went NUTS. They'd rather sail into a storm risk damage to themselves and the ship than miss their ports.

and P.S. I am pretty certain those people who started it were banned for life. There are threads on here somewhere about it.

LOL. Yes, seahorse safe!

But you hit the head. Why would anyone even want to go to a port where it's awful. Even a rainy Bermuda is quite bleak.

In this instance, non weather related, still always has me choosing the refund option.

You would think that all the money they saved by serving meatloaf and mac and cheese they would put into maintainance. Apparently it goes to the stockholders. Next thing you know an engine is going to blow up (oh wait, that already happened).

Only on a ship that got renamed.

You can do all the maintenace that is required but you never know when you have a mechanical vehicle when something might go wrong. I guess you have never had a car breakdown even though you have done all the maintenance on it. Also you don't know that a fishing net, a log or something else in the water didn't mess something up.

Just got the email from Carnival, delayed departure tomorrow. The email says departure will be between 2:30-5:30. This is due to a problem with something affecting the ships maximum cruising speed. Does it seem to anyone else like that has been happening to a LOT of Carnival ships lately?! It also says that we will only be visiting either Progreso OR Cozumel, not both as planned, and we will stay overnight. They have not yet said which one. We are being offered $50 OBC each.

Any idea what time we should show up at the port? The email says 2:30 but I know sometimes an email gets sent that is designed to space people out at the ports.

Funny you said that . After I read about another ship being down. All I can think of is since they owned Conard and that ship went down, I don't think they have the money to maintain their ships. From what I have read here on the boards Service has been cut down, the food has changed. We leave in February and I am thinking it maybe our last cruise with Carnival.

Losing DAYS would make us think of cancelling, but not losing ports. 5 nights at sea would be ok with us, and we would have a 50$ per person OBC AND the $200-$300 we would have spent off the ship to help kill the pain. Not ideal, but still a good cruise.

People are bonkers. here's one that happened after the one i was thinking of (and isn't even half as bad as the other video i saw where one guy seemed to be leading it and created utter and complete bedlam).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm0sIlNj4VE

people seriously need to chill out.

You can't choose who you cruise with. Unfortunately, there are people who WILL do this. Who would ever want to be on a ship with that? I'd take the cruise, deal with the adjustments later, have as good a time as i possibly could, accept the OBC and enjoy to the fullest extent possible. I wouldn't want to be spending the time doing THAT.

So knowing that some people do this is something to consider.

"A post on CruiseCritic’s Carnival board suggests passengers aboard Carnival Conquest might not be taking it all in stride: there’s talk of a protest against port calls cancelled due to the rough weather. In the end, it seems the threatened protest didn’t actually occur – but it has in the past.

Besides providing some lively entertainment for the armchair cruiser, this post illustrates a dangerous trend that seems to occur more and more frequently: passengers, apparently more informed than the officers onboard or the cruise line ashore, banding together in protest. Their demands? Everything from sailing straight into a hurricane-ravaged area to onboard credits to free cruises – it’s all up for grabs."

That had nothing to do with maintenance whatsoever. Everything to do with a stupid, dumb decision by the captain trying to impress friends on shore. Just trying to set the record straight.

Wow, you just have to wonder if Carnival has made significant cutbacks in their maintenance budgets over the past few years. I realize these are isolated, but there sure has been a lot of maintenance issues over the past few months.

I'm just amazed at all the up front offers of refunds.

The BETCHA memos need to be dropped though.

This happened in 2010/2011 with NCL. The azipods all seemed to bite the dust in a couple of ships around the same time.

I agree - that would be a treat!

On the Constellation last month we ended up having to stay in Key West overnight (were scheduled to leave about 2 pm). The Carnival ship which was supposed to dock there with us that day opted to skip Key West and make it a sea day. This was due to somewhat strong winds.

When 2 pm rolled around, they started the engines (so to speak) and dropped the ropes. With 3-4 attempts we never managed to get more than a few feet away from the pier until we were pushed back by the wind! A short time later it was announced that we were overnighting there and would leave in the morning when the winds were forecast to diminish.

The "catch" is this... we knew ahead of time that we would be docking not at the Mallory Square pier but rather at the Navy pier. When the Carnival ship decided to skip the port we did not then take the (now available) better spot but kept to our original plans. That means that to get to/from the ship you must take a tram/trolley. Well, there was no provision for the extra security personnel that would be needed for us to be shuttled back and forth into town through the Navy base - so we were stuck on the ship all night... with Key West so close you could almost taste it!

I was surprised, no - make that amazed, that they indicated that we had received permission to open the casino at 7 pm that night, WHILE DOCKED IN KEY WEST.

Not sure how they pulled that off - or if they really asked anyone (you know, sometimes it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission)!

Or, if the memos have to go out, revise them to delete the foolish "betcha" and add the following to the end:

"We know how much you were looking forward to this vacation and sincerely apologize for this disruption to your cruise. We kindly ask you consider the following options:

Sail with us and receive a:

• One-day pro-rated refund of your cruise fare (refunded within the next 2 weeks)

• $50 per person on board credit

• Refund of the difference in government fees and taxes, if applicable

• Gratuity adjustment to reflect the shortened voyage, if applicable

• Refund for shore excursions purchased for cancelled ports, if any

And if you believe there is any chance at all that you will become dissatisfied with this offer once onboard, we URGE you to consider canceling and rescheduling your sailing, so that those who wish to sail may enjoy a safe and peaceful voyage."

[sad to even have to joke about such a thing]:(
