No family-friendly movies on Seaside Theater

So much about our cruise was great, but I do want to make one complaint, in case it might influence future policy...

 

The Dream class ships have many family-friendly features, but the latest Seaside Theater line-up is not.

 

Our first night was understandably taken over by football -- but this meant Monsters Inc was shown at 10 p.m. The second night featured two pg-13 action movies. The third night was a PG-13 action movie and the caribbean party. The fourth night -- two PG-13 Bond movies. The fifth night -- two PG-13 chick flick/romances. The one I saw was, IMO, not appropriate for the kids in the audience. The sixth night -- Johnny English Reborn, a PG but only shown during early dinner and some parents might find it inappropriate. The seventh night -- PG-13 Chicago at the prime family hour of 8 p.m. and Grease at 6 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. While we waited to debark, a PG-13 Bond movie was shown at 10 am. No other daytime movies. Only a couple G or PG movies were shown and those were at 6 p.m. or very late. My younger children did not get to watch a movie. And the Funtimes does not list ratings to help parents who are not familiar with a particular movie. I know that these days everything is a PG-13 and there are very few PGs, but I don't let my kids who are well under 13 watch them. It seems like from the old funtimes I've seen that Carnival used to try harder to have SOME family-friendly movies at family-friendly times.

That's a bummer that they don't have more for the younger kids, at least during the earlier hours.

 

Do you remember the names of any more of the movies? I posted a thread earlier asking what was currently playing but got no replies. I'm curious as to how current some movies may be.

I guess I have to agree with you. My kids aren't really into super hero movies. They may enjoy Bond although they will only be 12 and 10 when we go. I hope they do add some more movies we could all enjoy together. My wife would hate the super hero movies and Bond. I would hate the romantic comedies.

there certainly needs to be a g rated family show during a time that the family can actually watch it. i believe it's common knowledge that most people with young children book early seating for dinner because the kids need that early time and early bedtime. therefore showing the family feature at early dinner time makes no sense.

 

but you know what i say about common sense? it should be called uncommon sense because it's not very common. :cool:

I recall on our Freedom cruise that there weren't many movies I'd want my kids to watch either. I don't think I watched any movies...either the ones I wanted came on too late (after the sports), or I had already seen the movies. So now I just know the seaside theatre isn't a main selling point for me.:D

Huh? They are PG-13 movies, how much lighter do you want them to go? The adults on the ship aren't going to want to watch little kid's movies all the time. And you even admitted they had Monsters Inc. one night. Besides, there aren't very many PG movies anymore. For example, at my local theater right now they are showing 14 movies: four PG-13 movies and ten R rated. They'd have a very small group of movies to choose from looking for G and PG.

 

Seems to me your real complain is that rather than move Monsters Inc to 10 pm after football, they should have moved it to another night at 8 pm and showed one of the PG-13 movies after football. There I'd agree with you.

But if Carnival showed these G movies after the early seating (approx 8pm) wouldn't it be the kids bed time (or close to it)? From the sound of it, you have very young ones. Would they even be allowed to stay up til 10pm in your household?

My son is 10 and we watched all those movies with him on our last Breeze cruise, january 13, always one of our best moments while we cruise !

Sadly, there are few new movies actually appropriate for children these days that also appeal to the whole family (a whole other off-topic discussion), but there are some, or they could play an older classic. That is what our local park does when they have outdoor movies at night. We all loved ET this summer. Playing Monsters Inc another night at 8 p.m. would have been an improvement or any other family movie at 8 p.m. just one night out of seven. Or even during the daytime. And ratings in the Funtimes, just like they warn about "costuming" in shows.

 

I'm especially thinking of my eight-year-old, who certainly is allowed to stay up to 10 p.m. on vacation but is not allowed to watch PG-13 movies. Many kids from toddlers up were watching the 8 p.m. movies. There are blankets and comfy places to sit.

 

This wasn't some huge deal that ruined our cruise. It's just something I want Carnival to think about when scheduling the movies. Not everyone thinks PG-13 is light enough, at least for those ten and under. :)

Many of us do not want movies playing during the day while we are laying in the sun watching the sea and hoping for some calypso music. And some of us hate the big screens alltogether. TV is one of the things some of us used to cruise to get away from. What about us? We count too. Cabins have TV.

You answered your own question. Hard to show what isn't being made plus they can't really show films that would only appeal to those under 7.

 

Each parent makes their own decisions as to what is appropriate but we were fine with most PG-13 action movies.

It was often the PG-13 comedys that were too adult.

We avoid the Sea Side Theater like the plague. Too loud, etc.

 

Movies are shown on the TV in the rooms, but I don't have a clue as to what they are. We only turn on the room TV to check our account, check the menu for the night, or check the ship's position.

It's very hard for Carnival to please everyone. It seem this choice of movies would most appeal to teens and young adults. If you had true "family-friendly" stuff you would have the teens sneering at it and running off to create havoc somewhere else.

 

Keeping the teens occupied around the pool seems to be the best strategy and with a bit of parental guidance the youngsters could enjoy at least half of these films.

I agree with you in that I wish they'd never installed these screens, but they are there and I do have to side with the OP. Considering families is a big part of their business, I don't think it's too much to ask that a G or PG (old or new) movie be played at a time the kiddos can watch. Considering they play multiple movies a night, why not make one a G or PG matinee at least a few nights a week. Yeah, I'd rather have calypso music and sunshine, but if a movie is going to be playing, seems like they'd make the early one a family one.

On the Glory this past August , they played Beauty and the Beast in the Seaside theater.
