Lifeboats under balconies on deck 6 (S-class), annoying?

Anybody found those lifeboats annoying on Continental deck? Am i right that they don't disturb the horizontal view from the balconies? My cabin is 6263 on Silhuette. (sailing 10.03.13)

This shot is the view over the higher tender from a 2D balcony. The lifeboat top goes only to the balcony floor level

I've stayed in 6175 on the Solstice, which is the same category (2C) as 6263.

 

In 2C, there is no view straight down as you're looking at the top of a lifeboat. However, the horizontal view out isn't obstructed (unless you end up with a davit in front of your balcony). Looking at some 2D cabins, however, the obstruction is more significant since the lifeboat comes up to the balcony railing.

 

For us, it didn't impact our enjoyment of the balcony at all.

How about the view from 6203 and 6205 (2D) on the reflection. I am scheduled for both these cabins in the future. How bad are the views or lack thereof.

Categories 2C and 2D are obstructed view cabins. They sell for less money because the view is obstructed. All have the view obstructed by the lifeboats and tenders. The 2D cabins have the taller boats in front of them which may come up to railing height which is why they are the lowest (cheapest) category of veranda cabins. The 2C cabins have the lower boats in front of them which come to about floor level which is why they are the second from the lowest (cheapest) level of veranda cabins.

 

If you don't want your view obstructed then pick a higher level category and pay the difference.

 

There is an excellent photographer named Andreas Depping who I believe lives in Germany very near the shipyard where the S class ships were built. He maintains a web site with a very large number of photos of many cruise ships including all of the S class ships. Anyone who wants to spend a little time counting cabins from some identifiable location on the deck plans and then doing likewise on his photos can get a good idea of the exterior of their cabin location on his photos. I've included one of his photos below which shows both the taller lifeboats, or tenders, in front of some 2D cabins and the lower ones in front of some 2C cabins:

d4m, like you I would not book a 2D cabin because we love having a good view.

 

On the other hand, for the lower price, it works for some people. My sister-in-law, for instance, just wants fresh air and to know what time of the day it is when she wakes up from a nap.

The closest balconies on the straight section before the hump in my second shot in post #4 above are the 2D cabin balconies for 6204 and 6206 which are in the same location on the starboard side as 6203 and 6205 is on the port side.

6C aft cabins are among my favorites. The obstruction is not a bother compared to the price and convenience - one floor down to coffee and gelato, two floor to martinis, dining room and casino or a brisk walk (or elevator ride) up directly to the buffet. Plus, if they take down the boats, you get a really good look at them and how they work.

From someone that hasn't sailed on an S Class yet, I can say yes, the life boats have certainly put me off. I'm very used to Princess Balconies with a clear view of the water. We're in a 1A on the side of the hump for our Hawaii Cruise.

That cabin's balcony view will be similar to the over the tender view on the left side, without the davit, of this balcony which is the one for cabin 6214. Basically it is over the center of that tender.

I booked a 2C cabin on Silhouette, the best I could afford. then they had a sale with balcony gty same price as inside. For a savings of $1200+ from what I was paying for the 2C, I figured we could stand the obstruction, especially as it is a Med. cruise with only one sea day. EM

We loved our 6210 oversized balcony. Lifeboats didn't bother us at all.

Yes they are annoying. They should have extended the balcony above. That way there would be a deck with large extended balconies and I could look at a balcony instead of the top of a life boat. :D

Okay, so now I'm concerned about our stateroom choice...6215 on the Eclipse, category 1A.

It's one of the angled ones on the hump but are we going to end up looking at lifeboats or a roof and not the Sea?! I thought we'd be sticking out far enough to avoid any obstruction...:confused:

We don't sail until November so have time to change it out.

(...and I was so happy to finally get a hump room...*sigh*...)

For some cabin categories, it is not possible to moved to another deck. All of the suites are on deck six and look over the lifeboats. The view isn't an issue, the maintenance that is done by the crew on that desk, can be an annoyance. On the Infinity in Oct 12, for most of the entire 15 night voyage, the crew pressure washed, painted and performed drills. This took place uring the day time but could be annoying when on the balcony with overspray from pressure washing, voices and paint smell. I agree... not the best design.. but convenient to everything on decks 5 and 4.

The arrow in the shot indicates the location of the balcony for cabin 6215. The underneath tenders end two balconies forward at cabin 6209 and the railing of that balcony is further out than the tenders. You will be able to see a corner of the shed underneath but that balcony is basically overtop of it most of that shed. Also that cabin is one of the cabins that has the largest non-suite balcony omboard Solstice class ships. It's a keeper, IMHO.

That would have been nice but then deck 5 would have to be at least four feet higher in order for the deck six balconies to clear the tenders and lifeboat divats.

Grand class Princess ships have this arrangement for their fully exposed Dolphin deck mini-suites balconies because the tenders and lifeboats block the view of OV cabins on the Emerald deck 8.

IMO it isn't a better view and I actually prefer the tender/lifeboat view on Solstice class ships.
