Long pants for men in Europe

Do men need to wear long pants if they go to religious site in Europe?

Thanks so much

Lynn

In theory, that would depend on the religious site and the country. As a rule, Italy and Greece are stricter than Spain, and Spain is stricter than Britain or Germany. That said, even in Italy men are rarely stopped from entering a church if they are wearing conventional short pants. Keep in mind that women have to be far more careful.

Men wearing shorts will not be allowed in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome or in St. Mark's in Venice.

The signage makes it very clear what the rules are, and yes, they check.

Yes indeed, they do check. We saw them checking every person.

OP, yes your man (men) should wear long pants as a sign of respect. I wouldn't recommend jeans if you are going in summer, but a pair of light trousers will serve him well. There are also pants with zippers which unzip into shorts, very practical and handy.

Enjoy your trip. :)

Same as posted above, we have seen been refused admitttance to St. Marks in Venice and St. Peters in Rome because they had on knee length shorts. They cannot enter gthe Casino at Monte Carlo and a number of other venues.

DH had shorts on years ago and was refused a view of the monument to the three heroes in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, as it was disrespectful for him to not wear long pants. I was wearing a skort which showed to the guard as a knee length skirt and he admitted me to get a quick photo while DH waited and he didn't quite know what to say as I turned to proceed and he saw the back of my skirt was shorts. I haven't seen a skort in years but I used to like them when they were in fashion. :)

Gents should be wearing long pants in Europe because you are sure to come upon religious sites you'll want to tour.

Agreeing with the general posts and consensus here...

Just to be on the safe side - it is always better to wear long pants.

You can always have that extremely rare "guard" who will let it slide for a moment - (seen it both ways)...

But it's better to be safe than sorry.

Pack some nice, comfortable, long pants - and that way you make sure you don't miss the opportunity to see these places.

My friend wears "convertible" slacks. It's a regular of lightweight slacks where the lower part unzips from the shorts part. So, you have two pairs in one----shorts and long pants. He gets his at Magellans via their catalogue.
