Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

Weather isn't cooperating. I'm no expert, but I think they really screwed the pooch when they chose to go to Mobile instead of Progreso.

 

Are you watching CNN? I don't see how they can navigate the channel with the weather the way it is...

 

20 knot head winds and west to east currents. They are now talking about arriving in port tomorrow. Hopefully.:eek:

You have some reports of sewage coming down the walls...disgusting , but if people were moved away from that area and not allowed to be physically exposed to it, there is no danger. my concern would be that people be furnished bottled water and not trust the water filtration on the boat until it was comepletly serviced. Like I said, the SMELL of sewage is not dangerous. It is not pleasant, but it will not kill you. Some clown lawyer on CNN is now saying they are in danger of encaphalitis from misquitos...haha....can you be more dramatic and idiotic?

I'd like to know if they were able to drop items of absolute necessity today - like medications, baby formula, diapers. I'm just curious if CCL staff are organized enough to know the most critical needs of the passengers on board the ship - especially the elderly, young, and those with chronic health conditions.

 

I still can't imagine what these passengers are going through. We're seasoned cruisers, and I asked my husband last night "What would you do in this situation" - he couldn't answer. There is no way I could make a good situation out of this whole mess.

 

In my opinion (and we've cruised Carnival since the early 80's), Carnival was negligent in allowing this ship to sail. The problems have been listed in black and white on this board for months now. Can't wait to hear the NTSB report on this incident.

 

With all this being said, I'm sailing on the Legend in less than 60 days. and I'm not saying that as a cheerleader of Carnival. It's something we've already booked, and can't do anything about it now. I've trusted CCL, RCCL, NCL, Princess, Celebrity for the past 28 years. We love cruising, but something's got to give on this penny penching mentality of cruise line industry in general.

Here's how you do it: RIGHT NOW, you ask every person onboard if they wish to go immediately to a room in Mobile or take the bus ride to NOLA. You then arrange for lodging and transportation in Mobile for those who choose that alternative. You organize the bus rides the same way convention centers like Javits in NYC get people all across NYC to their respective hotels.

 

You then convey the instructions to the passengers and have Carnival people there to immediately give them a box lunch, beverage and escort them to respective buses.

 

This actually should have been organized and done yesterday. There is no excuse for putting profit before people. Let Carnival BE LOYAL to their customers. Yes, it willcost money and man hours...but at this point,it is the best PR campaign avalable to them.

 

The best protection against lawsuits is doing all you can in any given situation. Carnival is NOT doing all they can in regard to these ludricious bus rides.

 

The best insurance agsinst losing lawsuits is not alllowing the general public or potential jury pool to view you as obsessed with the bottom line rather than your paying customers.

I doubt those solar systems generate more power than the backup generator on Triumph. We can argue the environmental aspect of solar backup power, but there already is minimal backup power on triumph and all Carnival ships (as well as everyone else's). to completely power the ship you need a full set of backup power plants, something now required but which wasn't required until 2010. Royal Caribbean, to its' credit, added such a redundant system to Allure and Oasis even though technically they weren't required to yet. On Carnival only Breeze has been built with the entirely redundant systems.

 

That's interesting...I didn't know that a redundant system is now required in new builds. A couple questions...do you know if cruise lines are required to bring older ships "up to code" so to speak and do retrofits when ships go to drydock, or is that not even possible?

I also wonder if the redundant system is why Allure was able to make port under her own steam without loss of electricity and sanitation after her engine room fire?

Quick get Wolfe in the situation room, it's a real serious problem. We at CNN must overreact as we always do. Can't wait to see the interviews of 300lb people complain there was a lack of food. Seriously it was a fire, not much you can do. Be happy you are alive!

That same year the Ecstasy also backed into the pier in Galveston. Add to that two ship fires and along with the Concorida disaster and the Costa Allegra ship fire last February and you have Carnival Corp leading the way in incidents.

 

Could it be because Carnival Corp. has more ships than any other corporation? Just saying. I will say they SHOULD take a real close look at their maintenace records.

 

AND has anyone every tried docking a large boat no less a big ship.....strong winds and unexpected currents can make it VERY difficult even for seasoned Captains.

 

And please don't say Royal Caribbean has never had an issue like this and jinx them....I'll be sailing Navigator in 2 weeks and my next two cruises after that are also on RCI.

I would be interested to hear all of the arm chair quarterbacks hear tell me how Carnival could have handled this situation much differently.

I have heard some say that passengers should have been transferred to another ship. Obviously this statement was made by someone who has no idea the dangers and difficulties in doing something like this between a large ship with no propulsion or stabilazation. Not to mention what would have to be done with people's luggage and the logisitcs of getting that stuff back to them in an effecient and timely manner.

I have heard complaints about taking the ship to Mobile and whynot somewhere else. Well, those decisions were likely made by the people running the salvage boats based upon the prevailing winds and currents and the diffculty in taking a powerless ship of this size thru a narrow waterway into the port, such as the excursion from the Gulf into the port of New Orleans.

Many are suggesting that these folks need to be put into a position to take a shower before being bused to their hotels. Do you have any idea how long something like this would take? or the lgoistics of providing hot water and soap for over 3000 people? Imagine someone taking a long hot shower while others wait in line to get their turn. Folks are complaining about waiting in line to get a sandwich, and you want to subject them to this?

I am really amazed at the "sue" mentality of people and how a company who was providing a vacation service to people is ready to be sacrificed at the altar of the courts for a few measly dollars that will likely mostly go to the lawyers.

I for one would be happy that I was alive considering the implications of what happened. I have traveled extensively in some third world countries and I know that these should not be compared, but the stench of sewage is not going to kill them, and certainly is not worthy of lawsuit.

Let me first say... I totally agree with you- "how else should Carnival have handled this" -my only thought is (and I am asking because I really do not know the answer and would like to) what if - GOD FORBID - that ship had caught fire and they would have had to evacuate. What happens after everyone is safe on their life boats? How do they get rescued from the middle of the ocean? Coast Guard? How do they get passengers from a bobbling life boat to the cutter? I hope you don't think I am being flip...I really just don't know.

I agree that in the long run Mobile might not have been the best choice.

A Carnival rep this morning said, in no uncertain terms, that there have been no fatalities aboard either in the fire or after. If he lied, that's criminal.

Having it come to Mobile means much better media coverage. Much easier to get in contact with people on board. More helicopter shots. etc. etc.

Um I seriously doubt CCL would want ANY extra media attention right now. In fact, if all the media disapeared they would probably jump for joy.
