Celebrity Newbie Questions

Hi All,

We have never sailed on Celebrity and before I try to talk my DH into a really great itinerary (12-night Mediterranean Cruise - Rome to Venice) on the Celebrity Silhouette.

I have a few very important questions .... so does anyone know:

Do they have Guinness onboard? Tap or Can or Bottle?

Is there poker in the casino?

Is formal night really formal? Are there casual dining options?

We are accustom to NCL (platinum status) and RCCL ... I am assuming they are similar? Any Major differences?

Thanks for any direction here.

Do they have Guinness onboard? Tap or Can or Bottle? They list Guiness on their web site.

Is there poker in the casino?

Is formal night really formal? Are there casual dining options? Small percentage of tuxes, mainly suits and sport coats. Specialty restaurants are always smart casual. Room service offers MDR menu and of course there is the buffet.

We are accustom to NCL (platinum status) and RCCL ... I am assuming they are similar? Any Major differences?

Celebrity is a little more laid back than RCI (never been on NCL). If you are Platinum in C&A, that will transfer over as Select on Celebrity (Diamond => Elite).

Just got off the Celebrity Reflection. My boyfriend loves Guinness, but doesn't usually drink it much on a cruise. He did have it one night, in Michael's I think. He was disappointed that they served it in a pilsner glass though, rather than a true Guinness glass. It was in a can, not on tap.

Can't answer about poker; I stick to Blackjack and roulette.

Formal night- was definitely formal, compared to most of my recent cruises on Royal, and one prior one on Celebrity. Then again, the average demographic on this particular cruise seemed to be a bit older than even my prior Celebrity cruise. I saw quite a few suits, and certainly some men in tuxes. More long gowns on ladies than I usually see, also.

Casual dining- Oceanview Cafe (buffet), Bistro on 5 (small surcharge).

I have never been on NCL so can't compare, but as you can see in my signature have done MANY cruises on Royal. Biggest differences that I see between Royal and Celeb are:

1) no smoking in the casino on Celeb; Royal alllows smoking in the casino and while they designate certain tables as non-smoking, it doesn't do much good when the next table down is a smoking table;

2) Celeb seems to have far fewer of the constant, inane announcements over the PA about pool contests, $10 sales, gold by the inch sales, etc. etc.

3) Celeb also doesn't seem to be big on all the pool games/contests like Royal. Every day on Royal it's something.... belly flop contest, hairy legs contest, etc. I don't mind the contests per se, but they drag them out for what seems like forever, and the whole time the host is barking over the microphone. I find it very annoying when I just want to relax and listen to music or read my book. I didn't notice any of these activities on either Celebrity cruise, although on this last one we spent most of our time in the Alcoves, which are a deck up from the pool deck. They did have a daily zumba (?) dance class by the pool, but it wasn't as intrusive as the games/contests.

4) Otherwise, I find more similarities than differences between Royal and Celeb. Both generally offer excellent service in my opinion, both keep public areas clean and well-maintained (nice touch on Celeb- actual cloth hand towels in the public restrooms, rather than or in addition to paper towels), and both have similar dining options.

Thank you.

Your info is much appreciated.

I did not even know that RCCL and Celebrity are in a sense the same company. (?)

I have not sailed RCCL very much but I always had a suite so maybe I have a C&A Status?

I hope we can pull this one off!

Peace,

Juried

If you have sailed on RCCI, you are eligible for Crown and Anchor. If you check with RCCI, they can either enroll you or tell you your status. If you qualify for Diamond on RCCI, that gives you Elite on Clebrity - perks are noce!

You can enroll in the C&A club either on board during your first cruise on Royal, or at the completion of it. To my knowledge, it is not automatic though; you have to call or go online and do it. Perhaps you enrolled and don't remember? Either way, call Royal and ask. If you enrolled, they can tell you how many cruise points you have and thus your status. If you didn't, they can enroll you, and then if you give them the dates of your past cruises, they can verify and give you credit for them and then let you know your status.

I did not find formal to be all that formal, but it is definitely more dressy than what is allowed in the dining room on NCL. I just wore a black pantsuit on formal nights, but slacks and a nice top would have been sufficient from my experience in Select dining, and looking down at those in traditional dining.

Contrary to the opinions of some others, I did not really find Celebrity's food to be superior to NCL's. The portions were larger, but not necessarily tastier.

Is there poker in the casino? Have been on Sister Ships (Eclipse and Equinox) and only had computerized poker tables. Lightening Poker and/or Poker Pro 9 players max. They held NL Holdem Poker Tourneys on Sea Days and would have $1-2 NL Holdem Cash games in the evening (has a house rake of 10% - $15 max). Not the same as a live table with real dealers, chips, and cards, but it was something at least. I am not fond of BJ or slots. They also had a Texas Holdem type table (but not played the usually way) were you have to beat the Dealer's Hand to win. It's usually mixed in the tables of BJ and 3 card Poker.

Is formal night really formal? You can get away with a Suit and Tie or Blazer/slacks and Tie and Women with Dress Slacks and Dressy Blouses. Opposed to wearing really formal wear. Are there casual dining options? Buffet area is always casual. Specialty Restuarants are always Smart Casual.

I believe the Silhouette has the Poker Pro tables as mentioned. I have played on these several times on cruises, and I love them. There is never a dealer error or pot miscalculation, and in my opinion they actually attract a lesser-skilled crowd. Real dealers can be intimidating to beginners sometimes.

I am a decent player, not expert by any means, and i have done well on all three cruises that had these tables.

Of course i just jinxed myself for my upcoming Silhouette cruise March 31!

If you didn't register for the Crown and Anchor than you are not a member. It is not automatic. You should register and get credit for the cruises you have took.

You will have to provide them with the sail dates and some other proof.

I cannot believe you've been on RCI and haven't joined the C&A? You definitely need to do that! You want to get double credits for being in suites (not junior suites) and for any longer itineraries.

With RCI and Celebrity both, you have to actually register with their frequent cruiser programs. It's not automatic like it is with Princess and others.

To me, NCL's food and service in the main dining room was pretty bad. Their specialty restaurants were good though. I think you'll notice better service on Celebrity.

Hi Alan & Allyn - I just booked a cruise last night (first one on Celebrity) and I am platinum on RCCL. Do you know how do I get my passenger number from RCCL to the Celebrity reservation so I can get the perks? Thanks for any info you can share!

Ps - live in Gardens, work in Boca!
