Labadee, Haiti

The CDC has placed Labadee, Haiti, RC"s private beach, on their malaria alert list. I just returned from cruising was rejected from donating blood because of this alert. I donate regularly every 8 weeks. Now I have to wait for 1 year before I can donate again. It would have been good to know prior to cruising: I would probably have stayed on the ship. It is my fault, never thought to check the CDC list prior to cruising, but RC could alert passengers of this change. Please be aware this is not the choice of the donor center. This is a CDC regulation used by all donor sites.

I think is is true of Mexico ports also isn't it? I think I read that and I guess we really need to check on this for all the ports as my teenage son donates regularly since his blood type is one of the rarest (AB-).

Yes, this has been this way for a number of years. Many have posted that they were not able to donate blood for a year after visiting Labadee. Have heard of other ports having the same restrictions, but can't remember what they are right now.

 

While it would nice for the cruise lines to let you know, I can see why they do not. It is really each and every travelers own responsibility to know what impacts each ports has to their individual needs. Just because it is a cruise doesn't mean it is just like staying at home.

Still is in OHIO, even if you dont get off the ship, they did not accept the blood donation.

Wonder if this is universal.

Yep, just got a 'thanks but no thanks - see you next year' from New York Blood Center, because of a stop in Labadee this summer.

Same thing for Canadians stopping in certain ports. My husband couldn't donate blood after a visit to Honduras.

My daughter in law tried to donate blood two weeks ago and they said no because of Labadee. They also mentioned Cozumel I think.

I have to wait a year after being in Labadee. They said even if I didn't get off the ship. They a just being very careful. I am going to southern Caribbean on a cruise Dec. 28th. I had to wait back in 2006 also.

Haiti has been on the "can't donate" list for YEARS!

When I was in a missionary in Haiti from March 1983- Sept 1984, I was not able give blood for 3 years after my return.

At this rate we will never be able to donate again, if we keep visiting Labadee on our cruises.
