I've been looking at a Baltic cruise in July and am wondering if there is much advantage of July vs. June. What might the weather be like in one month vs. the other?

 

In either month, will it be nice enough to use a verandah, or not so much?

The definite answer? Maybe. Maybe not. July will be warmer and provides better odds. Earlier June or later June? What specific dates are you considering?

 

You can go to

http://www.wunderground.com

and check for the very specific weather history on many of the key towns in the world for their past temperatures in that specific area for a date in the past. Just look lower left in the page for weather history area, put in your exact dates and the year prior. You will then see what last year was like, along with recent highs and lows for that date there.

 

Here are a few weather averages for these three key cities in the Baltics:

 

Copenhagen: High/low averages,

May: 59/45 °F

June: 67/52 °F

July: 69/55 °F

August: 69/54 °F

September: 62/50 °F

 

St. Petersburg:

May: 59/42 °F

June: 67/52 °F

July: 71/56 °F

August: 66/54 °F

Early Sept. 56/42 °F

Later Sept. 48/36 °F

Go when best fits into your schedule. You never know what the weather could be like. You could plan your trip around what is ideally the perfect weather timeframe for traveling and it could be crappy the entire trip.

 

Perfect example, where I am. In 2012 we had a week of 80 degrees. In 2013 the same week we had snow and didn't hit about 30. I realize where you are going it will not vary that greatly in temperature. But it just shows that you really can't guarantee the weather.

We were more concerned about the difference in crowds than the weather since for the most part, the weather tends to be quite "finicky" regardless of the month. We will be the only ship in port in most cities with the exception of St. Petersburg 1st day (1 ship) and Helsinki (1 ship). Good luck in your planning! :)

We are scheduled to leave on our Baltic cruise May 27th so will be in ports late May/early June. We were more concerned about the difference in crowds than the weather since for the most part, the weather tends to be quite "finicky" regardless of the month. Friends of ours did the Baltic itinerary a couple of years back in mid July and said they had lots of rain and the crowds in ports were horrendous! They didn't even make it into the Vasa due to the long queues!

In St Petersburg, June = White Nights.

 

Warm weather you can get anywhere. White Nights, not so much so.

Friends of ours did the Baltic itinerary a couple of years back in mid July and said they had lots of rain and the crowds in ports were horrendous! They didn't even make it into the Vasa due to the long queues! Dolfans from Miami

 

Crowds are another "crap-shoot" question that can vary much on different days. When there in late July and early August, 2008, we had no massive crowd problems in St. Petersburg. Much depends, as noted, on the number and size of ships in port on each different day.

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Celebrity Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. We cruised Mid to late

August and had magnificent weather the entire trip. Mornings were cool and afternoons nice and pleasant. Same cruise a year after and they were in the midst of the worst heat wave in decades.

 

As for crowds, we had nothing much to speak of. When you cruise in the summer months, you expect some crowds, but nothing that kept us from doing exactly what we wanted to do and seeing exactly what we wanted to see. It more depends on the ships in port those days, regardless of the month of the year. More ships in port, means another 2-3,000 cruisers all wanting to go and see the same things.

 

Go when it is right for you and don't try to overthink these things.
