Giantfan13 Posted June 18, 2013 #1 Share Posted June 18, 2013 If you are not doing a ships tour or are just considering something different to do in Bar Harbor, when the tide is out, you can walk to an island, along what is the bay, during high tide. We were there last year, and my DH just loved this. There is a path maybe 100 years wide and about 300 to 400 years long, from Bar Harbor Proper to this island (I forget the name). We walked along finding little crabs (which the kids love to chase) and some huge star fishes. Cars are even allowed on this stretch. Just a thought for something different to do while in Bar Harbor A few pixs of this area http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/Maine/IMG_3473_zpsea7cec03.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/Maine/IMG_3472_zpsd09e1ec5.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/Maine/IMG_3477_zpsa36d9b06.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/Maine/IMG_3469_zpsb704f756.jpg Cheers Len
SailBadtheSinner Posted June 18, 2013 #2 Share Posted June 18, 2013 The island you can walk to is Bar Island.
EthelandLucy Posted June 18, 2013 #3 Share Posted June 18, 2013 As a local I can say this is a great adventure. But please pay attention to the changing of the tide. It comes in quickly and there is no other way off of Bar Island. I'm wouldn't discourage anyone from going, but definitely keep an eye on the time! Giantfan13 Posted June 18, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted June 18, 2013 When we were there, they sounded a horn, to let people know that it was time to start heading back. Is that a normal thing? Cheers Len

Cheers Len Only if there is a cruise ship in port otherwise it is up to the individual to leave the island and bar before the tide comes in. Nitemare Posted June 19, 2013 #7 Share Posted June 19, 2013 I'm guessing Len meant you can walk it during Low Tide.
SailBadtheSinner Posted June 19, 2013 #8 Share Posted June 19, 2013 I'm guessing Len meant you can walk it during Low Tide. Yes, Len walked from the Bar Harbor shore to Bar Island, see post #1. BI is only accessible at low tide. There is drivable ramp at the end of Bridge St which allows cars and pedestrians to walk out on the exposed bar at low tide and walk or drive to Bar Island. Jan_In_Maine Posted June 20, 2013 #9 Share Posted June 20, 2013 Last year DH & I were so busy talking that we forgot to look behind us ... Its amazing how quickly the tide comes back in. We just took off our sneakers and walked barefoot back. Jan

He also said "during high tide", so I made my comment in case someone got confused.
Giantfan13 Posted June 20, 2013 Author #12 Share Posted June 20, 2013 Sorry, my grammar isn't the best. When I reread it, I did think it came across as what I mean, but I was referring to what becomes the full bay at high tide. Cheers Len
