What to do if you only had 1 day on each island?

If you read down the board, you will see two things. First, extensive discussions of things to do in each port. As we don't know your interests, limitations, budget, etc, hard to recommend what you need to do. Better you look at what the cruise line offers (to get an idea of key sites) and read some down the board. Then you may have some more specific questions we can help you with.

Secondly, is October a good time? In what sense? The weather changes very little, so that is not a factor. It is a shoulder season (there is no low season in Hawaii), so a few less people perhaps.

Hi Annie,

I think October would be a great time to be in Hawaii!

Agree with Bruce, check to see what excursions the cruise line is offering ... that will give you ideas on what the highlights are on each island and what you can reasonably fit into a day on your own. Some activities and sights will look appealing to you and from those you can make a short list of potential things to do in each port. By doing some additional research, you'll be able to narrow your list down to one or two things in each port.

You'll need to know which port in Maui you're going to (there are 2) and also the correct spelling of Kauai...and you'll be in Hilo on the Island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island.)

Good luck with your plans!

Susan

Factor in that some of the driving takes longer than what you are expecting as there are few "superhighways". We are not cruising this time but flying from island to island and remember from the last time that it takes longer to get the car and get going than you think it will.

We carry one of those soft cooler packs as a carryon and then it allows us to have sandwiches and drinks on the beach where we are.

Wave at us -- we will be in Hawaii doing a land trip from Oct. 15 -30.:D

Hi People,

Is October a good time to be cruising to Hawaii?

What would you recommend we do since we will only have one day on Oahu, Maui, Kauli & Hilo? We will be renting a car and doing the sightseeing ourselves.

Thanks!

Annie

If you are doing the Princess itinerary (RT out of LA) we've done exactly that. We rented a car on all four islands and explored on our own. In the case of Oahu and Kauai we drove to the North Shores of the islands which are stunning. On Oahu Haleiwa is a fun town and a great place to walk around. The road to Hanalei is absolutely gorgeous on Kauai. Waves are huge on N. Shores of both islands, so not great places for swimming that time of year, but still beautiful. If beaches are your game you'll need to find something closer to where the ships dock. Weather in October was gorgeous. In Hilo we went to Volcanoes National Park and the Mauna Loa Mac factory, on Maui we drove to the Maui Ocean Center and Kaanapali Beach. But like people suggested, it's a good idea to check the shore excursions for your cruise and see what interests you in the areas you are going.

If you're on the Star Princess (lucky you, you'll be able to enjoy Elua and the Hawaiian cultural program), you won't be going to Kona. The ports are usually Hilo, Honolulu, Nawiliwili-Lihue (which is on the eastern side of Kauai) and Lahaina (the western side of Maui). Probably in that order, unless Princess has changed from the last few years. We've done the holiday cruise in 2005/6, 2010/11, and 2012/13, but my hubby has insisted no renting of cars (we did rent a car on Kauai on our honeymoon years ago and managed to drive as far as the roads went in each direction, but we were there for a few days).

I've ordered brochures from the websites for each port, which helped in our planning, and I've also googled each port and find a lot of ideas that way.
