Lesson Learned

I believe in FL that Polk county schools are closed the week you are sailing and there could be other counties with vacation at that time. I think Orange County CA would be off that week, but I don't know that that many people fly from CA to take an East coast cruise at that time.

Perhaps you can google school vacations October 2013 and get more info.

Thank you for the info! I did indeed, and it appears to be quite a few school districts in the neighbouring states to Louisiana have fall breaks. I had just never heard of this until that post. It surprised me. Oh well lol. I will be happy on a cruise regardless :)

It's not that you are old or that time of year... It's that some parents can not control their kids. We travel in the off season and it's a crap shoot.

Security on the ship could help, but also a crap shoot.

We need to teach the parents that it's a cruise Ship and not their personal baby sitter. I understand they are on vacation, but being a good parent has no days off...:D

I can hear the flaming already!!! Bring it on!!!

No flames here! I completely agree with you. The thing is that if parents would actually control their children, they themselves would enjoy their children more. I have three kids and we very intentionally travel at non peak times to avoid crowds of kids. Honestly, it's one of the reasons we homeschool. LOL

Usually I cruise in January.... this cruise was the first cruise at the end of June and all the kids are off school. Now don't get me wrong, I like kids, but I did find the volume on the ship much louder than it is when I usually cruise.

Likely some of the noise came from a group of seven 12-14 year olds playing smack down with the plastic cups in the Lido dining area or ten 12-14 year olds sitting in the middle of the open floor area at the aft elevators at 11 p.m. or possibly it was the steeplechase races that happened at regular intervals past our cabin door long after we were in bed (I know we're old 54 and 66) by midnight with the audience cheering on their favourite racer to win.

I know it couldn't be from the musical duo outside the casino who's decibel level was so high that you had to stand on the furthest side of the room to understand the words they were singing or in the Amber Palace you could feel the floor move with the bass of the music nor will I mention the upper Golden Dining room over the Any Time Dining where people were moving in and out frequently and we had to have the wait staff yell into our ears.

Must be me....... getting old........ as much as I love Carnival, I'm going back or old people's cruising time in January........... see you then Carnival Splendor!

You only do it once, and then you learn. For us it was winter break we accidentally booked a cruise in.

Google school schedules and avoid them. You can usually tell, Carnival prices go way up when school is out so you can almost tell from the prices which ones are during school breaks.

We are not kid haters either, we had six of them.

Judge much?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Who are YOU to judge parents that way? Each parent knows their child best. If they are good students and the school is OK with it, and the assignments/work can be made up, there is absolutely NO reason NOT to do it. In the long run, time spent with family is just as, if not more, important than missing one week of school. Some people......

You are certainly entitled to your opinion as am I.

My reasoning is that children who are allowed to miss school grow up to be children who call out of work often as adults. I cant tell you how many people with potential I have to terminate each month due to "attendance" issues.

Values are learned. Responsibility or lack thereof are taught. It's sad some are not taught until they are adults and the lesson learned is by someone other than those that should have taught them. As adults, the repercussions have an effect on their careers, a stumbling block that could have been avoided.

That isn't to say there are not exceptions to every rule. As one poster stated, the trip his grandchildren missed school for was contingent upon them completing all their assignments before hand. They still put in the time and the work, present or not. Now that is teaching them values.

Many schools have programs in place that will not allow for participation in extra curricular activities such as sports or cheer if they don't maintain good attendance. There is a reason those rules are put in place. Those that are involved at school are our future leaders, they are teaching them to lead by example.

Yes family time is very important. Sometimes though a responsible adult will need to make decisions that are not their favorite in order to teach their children responsibility and work ethic. Otherwise, we are that much closer to becoming bankrupt as a nation due to supporting those that can't hold down a job, or providing aid to those that don't have the stamina and work ethic it takes to better themselves in the workforce and be self sustaining.

Love it! and totally agree! I can't stand it when I see parents say "It's my vacation too" and think it's Carnival's responsibility to watch their kids. Or when I see parents complain about Camp Carnival not changing a diaper every hour...it's your kid, it's your responsibility. We took our dd on 2 cruises when she was young (4 and under) and never put her in Camp Carnival. I actually enjoy being with her - especially since I have to work full time and aren't with her much (my dh stays at home with her).

Cruised ONCE over New Years -- never, ever again. No I do not think your Ellie or Trent is cute. No I do not like getting on an elevator packed with "tweens". No I do not want my quiet balcony time spent listening to your lovely kids bickering. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a child free deck?

I taught public school for 32 years - no vacations in October! There might be a long weekend, but the first real break is Thanksgiving in November. I think you should be safe! :)

um...jersey week is the weeks around election day and veterans day.

very popular time to cruise especially out of nyc heck wdw has a special promo just for jerseyites that week...so yes, there is a vacation in early November....and again at thanksgiving..at least in jersey and those people travel a lot.

our public schools are starting the Monday after labor day this year due to jewish holidays..i wish my kids went to public school but they go to catholic school so this doesn't affect them, so we could cruise august 31st when the prices are better.

just an fyi....if your cruise is out of nyc or decent driving time from there...do expect many public school kids on the cruise.

WOW, that is a broad brush you are using. I would like to know where you are getting your statistics or how you know the people with potential that you had to let go were taken out of school in their youth for vacation.

I worked as a manager for over 40 years and had to terminate a lot of employees for excessive tardiness and absences but never once did I ask them if they were taken out of school for vacation when they were young. Also, if you are terminating multiple people each month for attendance issues, perhaps there is another problem creating the attendance issues or perhaps your coompany's hiring policies need tweaked. Terminations, I would think, are few and far between. Just sayin.

FYI, I was never pulled out of school for vacations and I never pulled my kids out of school for vacations. I have several friends that did however, and ones child is a physician and another 's is a CPA. WIthout statistics, I don't see your case having any validity. Just my opinion of course.

We always cruise in the winter months....the best time to go to avoid big mobs of kids is the first 2 weeks of December. It's after Thanksgiving and before the kids get out of school for Christmas

I am beginning to wonder if that is not a bad time to cruise. The students from Up North...many in boarding schools..where novo illness is rampant all throughout the winter....cruise with their grandparents...or parents.

It seems to me..that as soon as the Thanksgiving Cruises are over..NORVO is on several ships.

Out of 20+ cruises..the only time I have had Norvo..was on a cruise that returned on Christmas Eve. the entire ship was sick. Princess finally had to bring the ship in a few cruises later..no one would let it land.

If you do cruise then..take some cholorox wipes. Take a few minutes to wipe down the handle on the toilet..the sink handles...the phone..the fridge....the door knobs..the balcony door opening....

I have done that ever since..and No more Norvo.

What good is a child-free deck for your issue with sharing an elevator with teenagers? And perhaps kids can go under hypnosis so they never argue. The same hypnosis all of the adults that cruise go on...since no one ever has to listen to them argue.

Great post. The one you are referring to is definitely one of the most ridiculous, broad based ones I've seen on here ever. People with attendance issues are usually lazy. Got's nothing to do with their parents pulling them out of school once or twice for vacation. Give me a huge break!

Don't worry my husband (27) and I (26) we cruise in November to stay away from kids. I love kids, but I am on vacation to relax. I do not want to have to put up with out of control kids/young teens.

You just put up with out of control 20 something's, 30 something's, 40 something's............

But WOW those out of control 70 something's really need to be reined in!;)

I am so thankful that I have yet to come across these packs of wild, unruly children on any of my cruises. I do tend to cruise in September (our county has a fall break for school very early), but the children that I see onboard are usually pretty well behaved and respectful. Even when we cruised Disney (with over 1000 kids onboard), I never saw any of the behavior that others have described.

Unfortunately this behaviour is not unique to a cruise. As a middle school teacher, the same kids we have difficulties with at school, are likely the same disrespectful types you see on the cruise....and likely the same ones with parents that will complain about people speaking with security about their kids. They don't take any responsibility for their behaviours anywhere. Disgusting....

How true!

Fire, it wasn't that the cruise was bad, it was just louder than we're used to. We had a good time and really enjoyed ourselves, but found the noise volume (and not just the kids) higher than was normal on off peak time cruising. For the most part the kids were good, there was a handful who had the 'attitude' and a few who I really believe parents and if necessary security need to keep out of the halls and open elevator areas just for simple safety/noise concerns.

Ahhh... No, it is not that you are getting old. I was in my mid thirties when I went on my first cruise in August. OMG, the kids took over the pools, they were diving in the hot tubs, running amuck in the halls and every last thing you experienced:eek::eek::eek: Unfortunately, we were on a ship that did not have balconies, so no relilef there. We quickly realized that we were saililng the last couple of weeks before school was to resume. We have never sailed during the summer months again. My son says that I rule with an iron fist, he would be in big trouble if he had ever attempted to do some of the stuff I see kids do on ships. I guess I assume other parents to control their kids and that just does not always happen on ships.
