You're The Ship Designer - What Do You Do?

I'd build one deck with a "Lazy River Ride." I think that the on-board movie theater, would be a great idea. Some ships show films in the atrium, but there are too many people walking through, and it's distracting.

If my ship had an outdoor movie screen on the pool deck, I'd show a recently run film every night, providing blankets, and popcorn for the attendees. Other cruiselines already do this.

One more thing, I'd have another pool in a "quietier area," where the music would be softer. Sometimes the pool bands play much too loud. Music doesn't need to be loud, to be enjoyable.

Definitely not put the gym over cabins. I can't stand rules that restrict treadmill use before 9 or 10am- exercise is a big part of my vacations, and typically I like to be done and getting my day started well before 10am. Obviously, it would also benefit uninformed cruisers who unknowingly chose cabins directly under the gym, as I've heard it gets quite loud.

They start the treadmills at 6am on Breakaway - we know as there were 8 above our cabin and my there are some heavy footed people. Avoid 14738 Haven spa suite.

I would go for an area of cabins that are smoke free balconies - so you can book a no smoking one and be assured the people next to you won't prevent you from using your balcony. This way those that want to smoke can still do.

Love the ideas with the casino.

You mean newer than the Breakaway, right? Both the Epic and the Breakaway have forward facing suites so right now the newest ships have them.

I didn't put it very clearly but I was actually thinking of suites with forward-facing balconies. I thought I'd read that the forward suites on the Breakaway only had side balconies -- or possibly mostly-enclosed hull-type balconies facing forward? I really liked the forward-facing suites on the Sun and the Jewel with the big, open front-facing balconies -- really great for cruises with a lot of scenery, like Alaska.

Then I understand. We had an enclosed forward facing balcony on our latest Epiccruise and we really liked that. We used the "balcony" more than we ever have done before.

I would make the buffet massive. Like most of a deck massive. Its by far the most popular dining choice of every ship ship on any line, so why not make enough seating for everyone, or nearly everyone?

  • 2 weeks later...

The new ships do not have a promenade deck for walking or sitting. We like to go for walks after dinner, and the promenade deck gives a good amount of wind protection. So -- definitely a promenade deck with walking/jogging area.

Water slides are fun, and I like other specialties like rock climbing and bowling.

The cubbie idea is a good one, so people that want to swim can store their stuff not using a table or chair. We do not even ever try to get a lounge chair by the pool.
