You're The Ship Designer - What Do You Do?

If you could be in charge of designing a cruise ship, what would you do? More hot tubs? Bumper Boats? The sky's the limit and you're the boss!

 

We'd love to locate the buffet somewhere that passengers didn't have to walk through it to get to anywhere else.

 

I'd also like to see an adults only specialty dining "club", where the reasonable cover charge not only gets you dinner but a swanky place to hang out for the rest of the night with a bar, a band and a small dance floor, and an enforced "smart casual" dress code.

Fun question! I too would design adults only spaces, especially for dinner and dancing. Whenever I cruise it seems like all the "adult venues" are overrun with children. I would also have one dining room that was dress up only, and enforced! (not formal, just no ball caps allowed!) And finally, I would have an adults only pool that was outside, separated from the children's pool by a great distance.

How about a 2-floor casino, where smoking is only allowed on the top floor. And perhaps a whole deck of balcony suites that are adult only so that you can sit quietly on your balcony without the sound effects of crying/screaming children on either side of you.

I like the casino suggestion. There are a lot of people who don't smoke or even like the smoke.

On another note I would make sure all balconies fit a chaise lounge or two. There is nothing like laying on a chaise on your balcony as the sunset approaches and the ocean whisks by

Expand the size of Great Outdoors. It's wonderful sitting outside on the ocean having a meal.

 

I KNOW that there's an arms race on recreation areas...slides, golf, ropes course, etc., but I would simplify. Use that space for larger pools (includes adults only) and stop trying to do everything

I would like to see a certain amount of the lower category balconies be made available to solo travelers without the single supplement or studio type rooms with an ocean view.

Balcony studios! Not sure how you would lay these out since they would certainly need to be narrow, but maybe the only bed is a pull down from the wall or something. Just a thought. At least ocean view singles should be possible

Great ideas. I know I would spend more time and money in a smoke free casino. In fact, right now I am trying to choose between a trip to Red Rock Resort in Vegas or an X cruise.

 

I am platinum on NCL but NCL's casinos are way too smoky!

Definitely add more 'children's only' areas so they aren't forced to be around complaining, grumpy adults. Nothing like sitting down to enjoy your mac'n'cheese and continually get stares from the surrounding tables.

Slightly larger rooms, more pool/hot tub areas with plenty of seating, adult only specialty restaurant, night club for the 18-20 age group to hang out at, 2 casinos...1 smoke free and the smoking one in an area that people don't need to walk through, and theater rooms with current movies and popcorn :D.

My design will solve two big complaints. Pool sizes and poolside chair hogs.

 

I would expand the pools and hot tubs including a well separated adults only area to fill 90% of the pool deck area. Benches and cubbies along the side for swimmers to temporarily store their towels, shoes, and cover ups since they won't be on a poolside lounger because there will be none on that deck. Expand the overhang and areas at each end of the deck to accomadate more loungers for those that want to lay out in the sun and make sure there are plenty of shaded areas around the ship for those that wish to lounge there. ;)

Tough job making everyone happy! NCL I think does a pretty good job.

I can't stand rules that restrict treadmill use before 9 or 10am- exercise is a big part of my vacations, and typically I like to be done and getting my day started well before 10am. Obviously, it would also benefit uninformed cruisers who unknowingly chose cabins directly under the gym, as I've heard it gets quite loud.

There are rooms on deck 11 of jewel class ships under the aerobics studio. Can you imagine not knowing there was a 6am class, and then THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

Fun thread. I wonder how successful a ship would be if they gave the customers exactly what they asked for.

 

Here would be my ideal ship:

 

2 top decks contain 3 giant pools. The top deck has 2 pools that take up most of the deck. There is only one bar and no kids zone in this area to make room for the giant pools and tiered sun decks.

The deck below would have a giantic lap pool and would have the kiddie pool.

There would also be a giant waterfall crashing down into the top pools

Normal sized casino

Glass solarium like Oasis on the forward part of the ship

10 specialty restaurants plus 3 MDR

 

I would also create a very classy and elegant Haven area that would give 5 star white glove service.

 

Ok this is just a start......

 

But I would only have 2500 passengers on this ship. Everyone would get a chair and there would never be any waiting to dine. Now how would I run the ship on a profit since I cut 2000 passengers from the ship? I probably would have to double the price.

 

Now here is my question. Would you pay double to sail a ship like this? No crowds and chairs for everyone but at a price. I would also double the size of the cabins.

They have that now on the Pearl! Big signs announcing the non-smoking casino annex. We were pumped. We asked several staff where it was, nobody knew. Finally a passenger overheard and told us it was in the Bliss lounge. We found it! About six very old slot/poker machines. That was it.

So.,, obviously that's not what we are asking for.

 

BTW, way back when I cruised on X Summit and the casino was smoking. But there was a foyer area of non smoking machines. Now X has all non smoking casino.

 

So maybe the Gem is a step in the right direction?
