Fam_Cruise Posted July 27, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 27, 2013 Depends on hotel. 60 € to Athens Marriott. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/maps/travel/athgr-athens-ledra-marriott-hotel/ Go to the web site of the hotel in which you are staying and they may have taxi rate on their map/transportation web page. Rickey 88 Posted July 27, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 27, 2013 New to Oceania. Do we need a Turkish visa when visiting on a port of call or just when flying into Turkey? Also can someone tell me the distance from airport in Athens to hotel area downtown and approx. taxi cost. Thanks You will need a visa when flying into Turkey, obtainable at the airport just to the left of Passport control. However, while on a cruise, a visa is not required simply for a one day visit - leaving on the same ship on the same day. You're considered to be a "visitor" as opposed to one who "lands" in Turkey even if you eventually board a ship.
Buryfan Posted July 27, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 27, 2013 You do need one ,apparently , if you arrive by ship then fly home from Turkey! Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

Rare terry&mike Posted July 27, 2013 #6 Share Posted July 27, 2013 You can now get a Turkish visa online before you leave home, efficient and inexpensive.
Wendy The Wanderer Posted July 27, 2013 #7 Share Posted July 27, 2013 As remember it was about 30 minutes by cab from Athens airport to a reasonably downtown location. But I suspect they have improved the roads since then--can't comment on the cab fare, we had a pre-arranged driver, and it was a few years back. Lola911 Posted July 28, 2013 #9 Share Posted July 28, 2013 Last fall we left for Athens airport very early in morning...it was still dark...no traffic thank the lord...it was a long way and we commented on the distance. Cannot remember Euros, but it did not break the bank. Just do it...you only go around once. We loved Athens...stayed at Plaka Hotel.
LEESRE Posted July 28, 2013 #10 Share Posted July 28, 2013 Just Google "Transfers in Athens" and you will come up with quite a few. Like others have said you can get a Visa for Turkey online, if you need one. Otherwise if you fly in then get it at the airport, do not let the cruise line get it for you they charge mega bucks to do this.
kimanjo Posted July 28, 2013 #11 Share Posted July 28, 2013 We stayed at the Amalia Hotel, and took the X95 bus (pick up spot literally right around the corner) for 5 Euros each. At 4 in the morning, longish drive, but NO traffic. I would say about 40 minutes.
