Boredom on Transatlantic?

Recommended Posts

I was on the QE2 farewell to America cruise and it was my first TA cruise. I was not bored per se, but I was missing things to see. Fortunately, the Queen Mary was sailing along with us so on occasion, there was at least something to see besides all that water.

I go nuts with 2 consecutive sea days in the Caribe. Not for me.

You probably are not suited to a TA but, you will proably not believe me, now having now done a Caribbean [which I loved so much more than I expected], sea days on a Caribbean cruise are nothing like a sea day on a TA.

If you're considering taking a TA, you have to get yourself in the frame of mind, that this is the type of cruise that you will completely unwind and enjoying leisurely time on the ship.

This past April we had 10 consecutive sea days on Reflection. We loved it! We always cruise with friends, so we know our time will be spent just having a great time. We're never bored, and find that the time flies by very quickly.

I think it almost better not travel with friends, I think you get to meet more people if you are travelling alone

I agree. Last cruise we travelled with 3 friends, and met others, but didn't have time to spend to get to know them better. Kind of a shame, really, although we were thrilled to spend the time with friends.

We're thinking of taking the Infinity transatlantic cruise in October, but we're concerned about the 8 sea days. We like to read, but we don't want to spend 8 days just reading. Are there interesting activities during the day that we can participate in? I'd like to hear from anyone who has done transatlantic cruising and how they liked it. Also, I'd like to hear from anyone who has recently cruised on the Infinity.

Thank you!

Bored by sea days? Huh??? What's that?? :D

I love sea days on a TA, my husband prefers more port days. So, after longer cruises he sometimes flies home while I to the TA (or Trans Pacific). Once he flew home from Cape Town and once from Hong Kong rather than doing the days required on the ship to get back to the US. I stayed on the ship - both of us were happy with the arrangement.

We tend not to go the Roll Call route but thank you for mentioning it. We prefer to meet people when we are on the ship. Perhaps we will meet you on the cruise!:)

We feel the exact same way. I hadn't realized that others feel the same way. I met lurk around but we don't go to the Connections Party. We like to meet people spontaneously:)

Crossings are a time to relax. It depends on how much activity you expect others to provide. We like to visit with passengers during meals, play cards, attend lectures, get exercise, read, wander around the ship, and watching the sea.

On the flip side, we have chatted with folks on the Roll Calls, met on ship, and become friends with more people in the 10 yr's we have been on CC than the 15+ yrs before :)

Same here, book some great trips with people on the Roll Call

Got to meet people all over the world

We are never, ever bored. DH reads a lot, I don't read at all. He tends to find a corner and take his book there, while I go to the casino, spa, lectures, cooking demonstrations, pool, tea, choir practice, painting class, glass blowing demonstrations, etc., etc. And we also really appreciate being able to sleep in ... I never sleep in on Caribbean or port intensive cruises because the moments are so precious.

While there are plenty of activities, you also have to ask yourself if it would bother you to see nothing to ocean for days on end. Most people aren't bothered by this, but it does get to you after awhile. I so happy to see a flock of birds flying close to the ship when we approached France this past spring ...
