Congratulations, Jeff!! That 22C equals 71.6F. Warm!! Assume that's your interior temp, not for outside now in your part of the UK.

 

Now, outside, at 20°F (or 6.7C) for here in Central Ohio. They call that temperature a "RealFeel" of 8°F. Snowing has stopped.

Can you also cook on it or in it?

Just came in from weeding, eight huge giant bags...so there will be 16 bags for pick up at the curb tomorrow.

In the low 70's here. No snow😃 and no wind chill. Orchids are blooming and it's lovely outside.

Now I need to go into culinary mode and create some crab cakes with remoulade sauce. I had promised to make them but have been keeping low profile in the kitchen after breaking my robot coupe over the holidays. A sad event.

BTW the lemon recipe came from the cookbook Jerusalem, but there are lots of recipes out there, pretty much all similar. They are looking good.

Sophie...wondered how you were and if you were goi to send for us to help you unpack!

I'm good thanks spin...pity you're not closer, l may have roped you in ;)

 

Been working in the guest suite for the last two days and it's finally taking shape...currently unpacking the cases from the cruise I couldn't take on the Whisper, remarkably the clothes are fine due to my tissue paper packing regime!

Won't be long until l re pack for the next SS soirée :D

 

No culinary skills to report, it's been St Michael to the rescue this past few weeks :rolleyes:

On the culinaries and other fronts .... had some custard and some fresh strawberries in the fridge so another "bung it into the Gaggia with a slurp of Cointreau" bit and actually some very nice ice cream f...... and it was cold outside this morning ... so a bit of summer injection in the winter .... ..... :eek:

Like the idea of ice cream during most times of the year. BUT, not tonight for me in Central Ohio!! See this screen shot form AccuWeather from below. Looks like it was a high 79F today in Miami and will be only 71F tomorrow down there. Talked yesterday with a friend in the Phoenix, Az., area yesterday. Around mid 70s there.

 

Can't wait till we arrive in Barbados on the afternoon of Jan. 24.

Learning bad habits from Jeff, I am starting to take more food pictures. With it going to be so cold out tonight in Ohio and for much of the USA, comfort food is a very good idea. Wonderfully prepared by my wife. Look good?

I was in no mood to cook tonight and we got home late from work today. Found some short ribs in the freezer and threw together a quick marinade with soy sauce, apple cider, hot chile garlic sauce, and some freshly grated ginger, then let them sit for a while.

 

Cooked them over the stove in a grill pan as it's insanely cold out and no way was I grilling tonight. Added some sliced peppers and onions for a garnish, and it turned out surprisingly well!

We had a bit of a wine tasting to decide what would go best because soy-sauce based dishes can be challenging. I often prefer a Riesling with soy dishes. But with red meat, a white wine doesn't always make for a good match. Yet the umaumi in the soy often clashes with the tannins in most reds, making for a poor pairing. So we tried a semi-dry Gewurztraminer from the Finger Lakes of New York, and a Gamay noir from the Niagara-on-the-Lake region of Canada. Which do you think won?

YES!! I knew from your past comments that you would really like seeing that broccoli. AND, most important that green accent adds a nice touch of good color for the picture. Unlike a certain former President, I like broccoli. Per Wikipedia, they note: "Broccoli is a result of careful breeding of cultivated leafy cole crops in the Northern Mediterranean in about the 6th century BC. Since the Roman Empire, broccoli has been considered a uniquely valuable food among Italians." Knowing that Italian connection makes it even more enjoyable.

YES, I like some mashed potatoes with my butter. You have sharp, attentive eyes. Actually, it is "Smart Balance", a little more healthy buttery spread than the "real thing".

Good Afternoon all ...

 

May I just express a real thanks for the efforts to post food piccies. I know it is sad. I admit it. When I was younger I looked just at pictures of girls ... then girls and food and I guess now it's really more food. I am now uglier and older, and pretty much all women are now attractive to me ... and I have a really lovely wifey ...... and so it is really just pictures of food ...... :p

 

Terry, my favourite meat after Ribeye is minced beef or lamb or pork and sausages because you have good texture and can add all sorts of flavour. So after rib eye beef and shoulder of lamb ( oh ... alright and belly pork ....) my favourite joint of roasted meat is meatloaf. Is that wifey's meatloaf? It does look nice doesn't it. I'd say that in the way that some snobs must marry the right wine with meatloaf or it is evidently abuse :rolleyes: ...... I'd go for peas rather than brocolorium. Or I'd do a Famous Mash. The good thing about Famous Mash is that you can make enough for a couple of days. Mashed waxy potato's with slowly braised onion, some steamed cabbage, grated carrot, lot's of butter, some nutmeg all mashed up and split between several containers. to use with other stuff over the next few days ie lamb shanks or sausages etc.

 

Forgive me JP but those ribs and rice look really scrumptious. I can see that the pics don't do taste justice. The only couple of things missing in that marinade for me and wife's taste if you don't mind me saying so is some tomato ketchup and some brown sugar and/or honey and just a tablespoon of cider vinegar and perhaps a half teaspoon of Chinese five spice to give it an extra edge. But that's just me tasting it as you were saying it and I have a tough boss and I was just adding stuff. I never know when to stop do I?

 

That rice was proper rice. It was a nice fat grain rice almost a risotto rice. It was a meaty rice and I must admit I'd have mixed the onions and peppers in with it with a touch of nutmeg and baked it. Perhaps a few really crispy fried onion added as a garnish.

 

I've just eaten but now I'm hungry again. We had some Southern Fried Chicken today with slaw and fries with salad cream. With the wine. brandy etc it was safely with my five a day .....

 

I have some ice cream experiments in mind for the weekend .. some Maltesers and caramel and chocolate ice cream ... no falafel because my shapers are evidently being sent from Israel .... :(

 

I thought you might also like a picture of a pub in England where you feel drunk even before you start drinking ....

Appreciate liking the meat loaf!! Yes, done by my lovely wife. For me, meatloaf needs some "help" to spike up its interest/taste via the special spices and/or sauce. The BBQ did the trick last night for me. Below is a picture of what my wife had being made this morning. It's the holiday "Tilly Balls" with lots of powdered sugar on the outside. These are headed to Kansas for my wife's sister-in-law who loves these treats. I'm more into loving oatmeal raisin cookies, etc. Got to get my "fruit" by this handy means to enjoy the health benefits.

 

Off to a noon lunch/business meeting near Ohio State University. It's sunny here in Columbus, but still very cold. Now mostly sunny, warmed up to -3°F with a "RealFeel" of -15°F.

Terry, the art with a decent meat loaf is to use fatty meat .... :)

 

Just received an email with some exceedingly good news I'd like to share, from someone you may sometimes see on US TV, Clive Stafford Smith who is founder and director of a UK based charity called Reprieve, which wifey and me were founder members and support. He is a British civil-rights lawyer working largely in the US. We try and help with funding and respond to his request for help with campaigns such as this one.

 

He just wrote to say that Shafqat Hussain's execution in Pakistan has just been suspended. Shafqat was due to be hanged next Friday in Pakistan, but his execution was called off at the last moment following our campaign to save his life.

 

Time is always of the essence in the days leading up to an execution, but we all acted quickly to save Shafqat’s life. 7,000 of us sent messages to Pakistan’s president demanding that he let Shafqat live, and people from around the world donated to fund legal action in the courts.

 

Interior minister Chaudry Nisar said that the execution had been called off following requests by “civil society”. This is a huge victory, and a fantastic example of what we can achieve together.

 

Shafqat was just 14 years old when he was tortured into making a false confession and sentenced to death. His trial was a farce – his lawyer was so hopeless that he didn’t even work out that Shafqat was a child, and therefore could not be executed. But the authorities tried to press ahead with the execution regardless, arguing that Shafqat’s case had been handled well enough – two courts had each reached the same wrong decision, and we should all stop complaining.

 

I think anyone who cares about justice will disagree – and thousands of us made sure that the Pakistani authorities knew it.

 

This victory could not have come at a better time. Pakistan has the largest death row in the world, and Shafqat’s execution was one of the first scheduled when the government decided to resume hangings after a 6-year moratorium.

 

After calling off the hanging, the Pakistani government ordered an inquiry into Shafqat’s execution warrant, and why it was allowed. We hope that the action we took to defend Shafqat’s life will have a wider impact on the death penalty in Pakistan, and help to save many more lives.

 

This is a day that is genuinely worthy of an extra glass of wine. People just taking time and sending emails can save a child's life.

 

Hopefully now we will get him released. What a lovely day.

A little bit of Iceland, in my front yard!

 

A few years back we visited Iceland in January and the frozen waterfalls were beautiful. I left ours running this year and took some pictures today - have never left it going this late in the winter but it is beautiful today with the solid layer of ice on top, and the bright sunshine!

 

Up top, the pond has frozen over except for a little area where the water returns.

So cool! I don't know how much longer the pump will last, and the cover is frozen shut so no getting it out now. Might need a new one come spring but it's beautiful today so (maybe) it will be worth it...

It is WONDERFUL news re Shafqat Hussain ... poor kid. We need all the help we can get with respect to Linda Carty ..... google the name plus Reprieve for a full briefing (please) ... she is a British grandmother in real trouble .... we send her books as she likes to read ....... any support welcomed ..... :)

 

Supper was some freshly made chopped herring .... and this weekend's poolish/biga is growing nicely ....
