Review (long) of Summit 8/25 sailing

A little background about us. We are a family of 5, with 3 younger kids (ages 7, 5 & 1). This is our 6th cruise on Celebrity and 3rd time on the Summit. Last time on the Summit or a cruise for that matter was 2 years ago, so before it got “solsticized”. In fact 2 years ago our nickname for the ship was the “Slummit”. Although after this cruise, that name has been retired!

There was definitely not an air conditioning problem on the cruise as other posters indicated early in the Bermuda season. In fact, our stateroom and most public areas were too cold.

ROOM – I will start with the room review. All 5 of us stayed in a RS. We previously have stayed in a RS, so I will be able to compare. Room was renovated, new furniture, carpeting, etc. Flat Screen TV’s. We thought it was very nice. Bathroom was not renovated and like other posters have mentioned, could use some attention. There was nothing bad about it, but it was worn. It is 12 years old. Couple items that they took out of the room during the renovation and did not replace: DVD players & computer. I’m not complaining and didn’t matter to us, but it does show you Celebrity did cut corners even in the RS. We did have new loungers with cushions on the veranda. Other than that, the cabinets, closet were all original and in fine working order. Our handle to the balcony fell off, we told the Butler and it was promptly fixed. The mattress seemed on the newer end..i slept fine, my wife did not. We had a rollaway bed + the pullout couch. And we brought a Pack N Play for the baby. All in all, the room was definitely a nice upgrade to our previous experiences on M class ships. Our Stateroom attendant Maxine always had a smile on her face and kept our room very clean!

Butler - We had Dominic..he was a superstar! We had breakfast every day in our room + the occasional lunch and dinner served. He made our cruise that much easier and more enjoyable with 3 kids in tow! I tipped him in the beginning, in the middle and the end. I know that is controversial, but that’s what I did and it worked out very well for us.

Embarkation – Went very smooth. Our 3rd time at Bayonne, so I have the routine hammered out. Arrived at the port around 10:30am. No wait at check-in and on the ship quickly, not even time to sit down in the waiting area! One new perk they provided for RS and PS clients, they had the concierge host escort us to from check in to Michaels Club. They had a few snacks available at MC and we were able to stay there if we wanted until our Rooms were ready (which happened at about 1:15pm). But…we were all hungry so we decided to head over to the buffet.

Oceanview Café - Welcome Buffet…WOW…what a disappointment. (We are foodies by the way) Lots of stations closed, food quality was subpar. Pizza station looked closed..but then it was open. One person making and serving the pizza. I just need 2 slices of plain pizza. #4 in line..took over 15 mins. It seemed there were major cuts to the food on this buffet. On the positive side, I thought the buffet the rest of the cruise had more variety and better food quality than our previous 2 Summit Cruises. There were plenty of servers for drinks and people cleaning tables. Yes, at times the lines are long and yes, it is not organized very well.

New Room Service Menu for Breakfast – Our butler told us they rolled out a new menu last week. I am not sure who gets this menu but I would assume at least the suites do and probably CC. I would be glad to scan in if anyone is very interested in seeing exactly all the items. I think there a few new items: Smoothies are FREE. Interestingly, they have Pancakes and French Toast, but still no waffles..?? and...with the cruise lines trying to raise onboard spending, they now have a full page of PREMIUM BREAKFAST ITEMS for an additional cost. Steak n Eggs, $7. Black Truffle Omelette, $9. Crab Cake Benedict, $9. Fresh Egg Omelette (does that mean the free egg omelette is not fresh???) with smoked Salmon and Caviar, $9. Mimosa, Bloody Mary and some premium Teas. I did not try any of the premium items, so I cannot comment on them.

MDR – We ate there twice on the cruise, both were formal nights. We had a nice table for 7 by the window. Food was good, service was just OK, very slow. Very few tux’s worn, most men wore a suit or jacket with tie. There were still a handful with no jacket or tie.

BLU - We ate there twice. Being in a suite we had access to the restaurant. We checked in with the Maitre’d and had no problem getting a table. They recommended a $5 tip p/p at end of dinner. My wife and I both loved BLU. We thought the atmosphere is a lot nicer than the MDR. The service was excellent and food quality was a step above and seemed healthier and more cooked to order. Definitely a huge positive in my opinion to either get an Aqua Class room or Suite to get access to Blu.

Normandie – Ate there on the first night (they offered 50% off). We also ate at Normandie two years ago on the Summit. Although the food quality was very good, we thought it was slightly below our experience a couple years ago. Service was excellent and food quality was very good. Is it worth $45 p/p? not in our opinion. Especially after eating in Blu for $5.

Qsine - Our first time eating in a Qsine. Food was excellent, best on the ship. Service, presentation all excellent. Atmosphere very nice and a lot less stuffy than Normandie. Although its not cheap, we thought it was worth the $45 p/p charge.

Captains Club – We are Elite, so we got the standard Elite coupons. Not one phone call from the host about any upcoming events on the ship, I thought that was odd as we always did in the past. I called the concierge host to ask for a bridge tour and they quickly provided us with an invitation at no additional cost.

Fun Factory – We sent our older 2 kids here. We have previous experience with the fun factory. This was probably the one big disappointment on the cruise. There were definite cuts made to the fun factory. Overall, just a mediocre experience, to the point where I might hesitate to recommend Celebrity to a family. They moved the Fun Factory during the renovation to a section of Revelations. It is brand new and looks very nice and extremely clean. BUT… it is a lot smaller and no outside area like in the previous location. In the past kids would come back to the room with t-shirts, stuffed animals, art work ,etc. On this cruise, they brought back practically no art work or projects. no t-shirts, no pillow cases, nothing. No make your own pizza day. It was mostly watching movies and playing Xbox. My 7 year old son came back to the room singing a song that he said he learned from a counselor that we thought was inappropriate to teach a 7 year old. Overall, we were disappointed with the Fun Factory versus our previously extremely positive experiences with them. Were the kids safe? Yes. Were the counselors friendly? yes. Was everything clean? Yes. But before this cruise we always raved about the Fun Factory…we can’t do that now.

Public Areas and Bars - We thought the “solsticization” of the ship was executed very well. Stuffy old bars are now new and improved. Martini bar is a great addition. The new furniture was extremely nice looking and comfortable. Yes, there are some new additional staterooms but ship still does not feel over crowded at all. Plenty of quiet spaces to hang out at. The ship is a lot cleaner than before, with new carpeting throughout.

Entertainment – The one show we wanted to see was Jason Bishop and as you probably heard, he did not perform on our cruise. So we did not see any shows. The Butler did offer us VIP seats if we wanted to a show.

Pool Chairs –As previously mentioned by many posters, very difficult to get a lounger by the pool area. Some loungers were replaced during the renovation and some looked to be very worn. I THINK I saw some new loungers being loaded onto the ship when we returned to Bayonne.

Disembarkation – We asked for 9am and we received that time. Our # was called around 9am. There was a small wait for the shuttle bus and again at customs..but all in all, very easy.

Overall, another solid cruise from Celebrity. I was concerned about the quality of the food, especially with the subpar welcome buffet..but overall we thought the food quality was solid. The renovation of the ship was a nice surprise, as we thought the ship looked a lot better, cleaner and many nice areas were added to the ship. The RS was excellent, Blu and Qsine were a home run although we were disappointed with the Fun Factory.

I hope this review was useful and if you have any questions I would be glad to try to answer.

Glad that your family had an enjoyable cruise on Summit. I was just wondering, however, if they actually made you pay the $45 pp surcharge for your 1 year old at Normandy and Qsine. (It would be bad enough having to pay it for your older children.) I personally feel that even full-price tips are uncalled for in the case of babies and younger kids. Just my opinion of course.

Thank you so much for your thorough review. We will be in the Penthouse for the October 5 th cruise and we are really looking forward to it. We get 2 specialty restaurant dinners free for thanks to your review, it will be QSine. We will also eat most of our dinners in Blu as we have friends in Aqua Class and we love Blu from our previous cruises. Glad you had a great time, again thanks for your thorough review

The 1 year old did not go to the specialty rest. thankfully my parents were with us on the cruise and able to watch the baby while we ate a few nights. We did bring my 7 year old to Qsine and he was charged the full $45.

I hear what you say about the full priced tips..but on the flip side, kids usually make more of a mess than adults (in most cases)..so if anything kids need to tip more!! ;)

After reading my own post, I realize that my question may be moot, as I seem to recall that there is a minimum age for kids to dine in the specialty restaurants. Please excuse my stupidity!

no question is stupid! So Qsine does not have a minimum age, only Normandie does. But, i checked with the maitre'd at Normandie, he did mention that the min age is 12...BUTTTTT...if you have a child 9, 10, 11, etc..and he/she is well behaved, they are welcome to dine there as well. So like most Celebrity policies, it is open for discussion and not always followed exactly like its written.

I am glad I could help! Qsine was excellent..just know the meals are HUGE there...so space out your eating accordingly. plus the butler brought so much food for us in the afternoon, it was impossible to eat everything! enjoy your cruise and the PH!!

Did they allow you to bring your children with you to Blu or did they dine with your parents?

We did not bring the kids to Blu. I would assume they would have allowed them but I did not ask. I did not see any kids eating in Blu the 2 times we were there and the setting is a more formal than the MDR.

We were on the same cruise and your comments were pretty much spot on. We were not fans of Normandie. Certainly not worth $45. Food did not compare to our local restaurants. Service except for the sommelier was very good except our waiter made a mistake and didn't own up. We have always enjoyed Celebrity and I see that they are trying to emerge from the negative aspects of Royal Caribbean primarily the food. They were unloading new lounge chairs in Bayonne but that will do little to alleviate the always present chair hogs. Some were really obnoxious. My wife was sitting by the pool and someone asked her if she would be staying long because she wanted to line them up for her family and friends. THIS WAS AT 7 AM. I guess this will never change. BTW, my wife left. We had such a good time that we booked a cruise to Iceland next year, something on my bucket list.

We were also on the same cruise, so I'll add some comments here:

  • There was a food inspection done on the first day and I know that all food service was significantly delayed. That might explain the lack of offerings at the Welcome buffet. We eat at Bistro on 5 on embarkment day and it did not open till 1:30.
  • Normandie: We ate there twice and agree with your assessment. We did not enjoy it as much on this cruise. The food was very good one night, average the other. One night we were not offered the cheese tray. Another night we needed to flag down the sommelier several times after asking to have wine paired to our courses. And while I don't want to rush through dinner, it was terribly slow.
  • Qsine: We liked the food, service and environment so much we ate there twice!
  • Blu: There were definitely a few kids in the dinning room, but it was not a problem at all. We love Blu breakfast and dinners. The only negative was the sommelier, she often forgot my wine and one morning she told me I should stop at Cafe Al Baccio and pick up my own Latte on the way to breakfast. I just thought that was alittle weird. Either offer specialty coffees or don't, but don't make the customer feel bad about ordering it. She also was pushing the smoothies in the morning, saying she just made them and we should try one. We did, and it arrived warm and was pretty unappealing.
  • Michaels Club: Husband really enjoyed the beer selection here. We would stop by Cellar Masters and pick up a nice wine for me, then head to Micheals every night before dinner.
  • Aqua Spa Cafe: We had lunch here three times and really enjoyed the lighter selection.
  • Sunset Bar: A great early evening hang out. We ate dinner pretty late each night, so we would head here around 5:30, pick up a plate of sushi and have a nice relaxing cocktail out on deck. It was also a nice quiet place to have a late night drink. Jefferson Ang played here a lot, and we really enjoyed his music.
  • Pool Loungers: As was stated, the pool area was pretty crowded, so we headed up to deck 12 and were always able to find a nice padded lounger. Plus it's quiet up there - if that is what you are looking for.
  • Cabin 1108: One of the newer Aqua Class cabins. Balcony seemed larger than those around us as it was over the area the jets out from the Oceanview Cafe. Noise was minimal from above and below. Only complaint was the height of the toilet…. it was really high and our feet were left dangling.

You will love Iceland. We did it twice on Azamara and lived the Island. There is a lot to see and theropod are incredibly nice.

Can't help being nosy here. Just what kind of mistake did your waiter make and not own up to?

We were also on the same cruise and had very similar experiences to the other posters' experiences. We were a family of 4 with a 5 and 3 year old and stayed in a Celebrity suite. We really enjoyed our cruise. I just wanted to add a few other points to other posters' comments:

1. Fun Factory

We also noticed a marked decline in quality of programming content. This was our third year in a row on the same ship during the same week of the year.

The staff appeared to be nearly all different. The previous two years, we saw a lot of overlap in terms of the staff. I saw a few of the previous staff members now in different roles on the ship.

I think the Fun Factory staff was overwhelmed. The Fun Factory told me that there were double and nearly triple the number of kids compared to the previous two sailings we had been on. They were very trigger happy in calling us to have us "check on" (code: pick up) our kids, much more so than years past. For example, one time, the younger child left the Fun Factory and when the older child later noticed and asked the counselors where the younger child was and if the child was with us, the Fun Factory called me to go pick him up, saying that the older child was asking for us. When I arrived, the older child was happily playing and wanted to stay.

2. Blu

We had very similar experiences in Blu to what the other posters noted. We didn't bring our kids to Blu and didn't see any kids, but we tended to eat between 8:30-9 pm. We also had lukewarm experiences with the sommelier, but I wanted to pass along that she told me that she will be leaving the Summit soon for one of the S class ships (I forget which one).

3. Disembarkation

We found the disembarkation process at the port to be slightly less smooth than past years. We departed from the ship around 8:30 am. The immigration lines were longer, but that might have been because we usually leave the ship later. Also, it was more difficult to find a porter than previously experienced but that was because they were extremely short staffed that day. Only 15 porters showed up that day.

We were also on this cruise so I'll share just a few observations:

1. Aqua class cabin 1112. This is one of the new cabins added last year, I think. It was generally very quiet, clean and appointed with the usual amenities. Our shower never leaked so that was fortunate. The unfortunate thing about this cabin is that there is some sort of design problem with the balcony. When it rained the water could not drain away and left us with our very own "wading pool" covering the entire balcony. I had read another poster's comment about this problem but, by then, it was too late to change our cabin.

My husband discussed the problem with guest relations and they are quite aware of it but the engineers cannot figure out a way to correct it. I would not recommend this cabin, but only because it is an ongoing situation and I don't see how they can fix it. Otherwise, we were happy with the location.

2. Blu: We enjoyed Blu for breakfast and dinner every evening. In general, we received very good service and thought that the food was good. We did have very uneven service from the sommelier. Some evenings the service was quick and attentive. Other times it was very slow. They were busy but didn't seem overwhelmingly busy. However, we enjoyed Blu enough that we never bothered dining at the specialty restaurants.

3. Oceanview cafe: We made the mistake of trying to eat lunch here on embarkation day. That was the most chaotic I have ever seen a buffet and we usually do eat at the buffet when we first board ship. Many of the food stations had little if any food. They seemed overhwelmed with the sheer number of people trying to eat. It was a madhouse.

4. Entertainment: We missed the first night show but attended all the rest. The ship's production company was very good and I actually enjoyed their shows more than the guest entertainers.

The problem I had with the waiter is that he insisted that I ordered lobster. I almost died from a shellfish allergy and would never have mistakenly ordered it. My wife did order the lobster. I ordered the duck which was chewy and way overseasoned. But, hey, it happens. If I make a mistake, I take blame and I have had to take a lot of blame over the years.

Thanks for the review and the room service menu! We'll be on the Summit over Thanksgiving and will be staying in a RS as well. Can't wait!

I assume you were able to dine in one of the specialty restaurants at no charge since you were in a suite?

Did they offer the cooked to order grilled salmon, chicken and ahi tuna?

I did not specifically ask if they offered that, but the menu has changed for the spa cafe since last December. Now they have 2 entrees daily that they specially prepare for you. One day I ordered shrimp and another pork lettuce wraps. It seems like salmon may have been one of the choices. Now they sell yogart parfaits and smoothies in the aqua cafe.
