Royal Caribbean Bans Smoking on Balconies

IMHO, the only heat they should consider is the e-cig ban. I feel the number of cancellations happening right now is probably pretty common right after a massive policy change. I would think that after the first wave of cancellations take place, they will see an uptick in bookings coming from CCL. NCL and HAL along with people returning from lines that have a similar smoking policy where people would rather cruise RCI and changed because RCI did allow smoking on the balconies and now they don't.

And the opposite could happen. The pendulum may be swinging back.

I bet those who allow smoking will pick up more than RCL will.

I let them know how much I did NOT like this policy change. Hoping more smokers will follow suit here. Probably not going to change anything but it can't hurt to voice an opinion.

I still feel they could designate a few smoking balconies and charge a premium for them, to me, they are losing a chance to make more money.

I do know that popcorn sales are through the roof right now!!:D

Remember when Carnival banned smoking in cabins. The smokers were revolting and would never sale Carnival again. They seemed to have survived. I can't figure out why smoking is so important that it controls someone's life so much but, I do know people that it does.

THANK YOU ROYAL CARRIBEAN.

Let RCCL know you SUPPORT the balcony smoking ban and don't want them to change their decision:

Thanks for the link. I just thanked them for the new smoking policy. I think cancellations are to be expected at first as the smokers "show them". This will settle down and there will be plenty of people to take their places.

You've got to be kiddding. All of you non-smokers bitched about smoking on the balcony. Now, you are worried some one will break the rules and smoke. You are wondering if you should say something or report them. When is enough enough. I hope I never see you drinking too much, unsteady on your feet, slurring your words. I will have to find the booze police. Give it a rest.

I just noticed that there was a survey on CC home page about smoking. Approximately 75% were in favor of a total ban or wanted smoking banned from cabins and balconies. There was 25% that were in favor of smoking or other. I think that pretty much sums things up. Non smokers are the overwhelming majority today and cities, towns, states, et al. are prohibiting smoking in some or all public venues. Pretty much all indoor places except bars and some outdoor places. Companies are allowed not to hire you if you smoke and you are charged more for your healthcare even if you have never filed a claim. It never ceases to amaze me that in our "politically correct" society that the ACLU has not gone to war over such blatant discrimination on the approximately 20% of adults whose happiness and freedoms are being assaulted. I was a 1-2 pack a day smoker for 37 years and I have no desire to be where people are smoking up a cloud and stinking the joint out. I also have cruise buddies that smoke and I understand their displeasure. I hope that none of my buddies bail on cruising and that they continue sailing RCCL. Cool heads and common sense eventually win out.

I am not a smoker but wife and sister are, when I switched to Carnival this morning I dropped 7 cabins. I have sailed with Royal and Carnival some of my group wanted to go to Royal all agreed the Adventure is a nicer ship but Carnivals food is much better. Now 7 bookings at $2000 a cabin they are not going to change there new rules just for that. But if cruise lines keep bowing to all the cry babies soon no one will cruise. I think they should close all casinos because that is a sickness also, what about the bars ? I called Carnival and talked to a supervisor they are NOT going to stop the smoking on balconies anytime soon because they are getting so many Royal people coming over. They have Princes for there non-smokers.

...or hopefully they are smart enough to realize the cancelations are just a temporary thing. RCI takes numerous cancelations every day for a variety of reasons. This particular reason will be very short lived.

I am sure they wont change the decision. They made smoking in crew cabins outlaw after the grandeur fire. And unlike guests that still can smoke. Crew is very limited now. Wait and

see what the rules are. It maynot be as bad.

I would like to see USCG spreadsheets on what smoking has done to ships.;)

Time will tell. I heard about it from an email. It went viral quick:banghead:

I agree! There are just as many who will book now because they will not have to be concerned about the smoke drifting over.

You've got to be kidding, right??? Nonsmokers made their feelings clear to RCCL for years, and RCCL listened. Now that there is a rule banning smoking on balconies, somehow people are being jerks for wanting that rule enforced? That's the whole point of trying to get a rule made in the first place. By your logic, people who are fighting for, say, legalizing gay marriage should keep their mouths shut if they successfully get the law changed but then the state refuses to let gay people marry, despite the new law. That's your logic in a nutshell.

Before your post, I would have probably not called Guest Services if I saw somebody breaking the rule, but I have to assume yours are the views of the typical smoker. And based on that, I will now be calling--early and often. Thanks for answering my question and making my decision a lot easier.

This is a legitimate question/concern started in sincerity by the OP. Gosh, angry, aren't you? :(

I say live and let live. I don't try to force my opinions on others and tell them how to live their lives. What they shouldn't do because it is harmful to them. I am sorry that you felt my post makes easier for you to complian.

Definitely. They need to hold true to their decision as it's the correct one. There are still other areas of the ship that smokers can use without disturbing people on their balconies trying to enjoy their vacations. Seems very fair to me, I don't get it. The "Me Me Me, Want Want Want" mentality today is really a shame.

Unlikely, as the 80/20 split will be too hard to overcome. I'll give you another possibility dealing with TA's. Once the initial flurry of cancellations end, TA's that know their clients likes and dislikes will be contacting cruisers that are booked on the lines that still allow smoking on the balconies, and will let their non-smoking clients know the new rules on RCI and see if they can flip them, especially if it increases their commission.

Just emailed RC to complain about the smoking ban. I feel they sold me the balcony stateroom under false pretenses. I booked a balcony so that I could smoke. Otherwise, I could have saved some money.:(

While I support the smoking ban wholeheartedly, I do genuinely feel bad for people in your situation... hopefully they'll allow you to cancel without penalty.
