whiteladder42 Posted September 29, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 29, 2013 We are travelling Southampton to New York in December and want to take crackers with us for Christmas after we arrive. I have searched the Internet but it thinks I mean graham crackers rather than the paper ones you pull and get a hat and a bad joke! Does anyone know if they are allowed to be taken on board and more importantly, will they be confiscated at US customs at the other end?
babine Posted September 29, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 29, 2013 Hi there. I would suggest avoiding the possibility and purchasing them once you get to NY.
Salacia Posted September 29, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 29, 2013 Hi there. I would suggest avoiding the possibility and purchasing them once you get to NY. Sounds like good advice. BTW, here is a shop in NY where you can purchase Christmas Crackers: http://www.myersofkeswick.com/ Have a very Merry :) -S.
Underwatr Posted September 29, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 29, 2013 FWIW they put crackers at every seat for Christmas (Eve?) dinner on QM2. Just my opinion but there's more hazard in the little toy than in the amount of black powder that makes them go "crack."
Classiccruiser777 Posted September 30, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 30, 2013 Crackers (yes, the English variety) are available at T.J. Maxx in Federal Way, Washington! They are available around NY and I believe Williams-Sonoma carries them.

I'm sure that they are allowed on board and in the unlikely event that the US Customs firstly them and secondly confiscate them, you can easily buy some more. So I really wouldn't worry about it. gentlemancruiser Posted September 30, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 30, 2013 No problem to bring them onboard the ship. If you are flying to catch your QM2 cruise I just wouldn't taken them on an aircraft, you'd be inviting trouble with TSA screeners.

CruznTom Posted September 30, 2013 #9 Share Posted September 30, 2013 I don't think I ever remember US customs asking if we had explosives when disembarking. I would wrap them neatly and bring them as the gift they were meant to be...as long as there are no flights involved. Sorry, forgot to sign in. Dcoy Posted September 30, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 30, 2013 You do know that the dogs at the ports are checking for other things besides drugs. Trust me, they could smell the crackers. :D Don
Summergee Posted September 30, 2013 #11 Share Posted September 30, 2013 According to Cunard's faqs explosives are not allowed on board. Have you tried talking to Cunard about this?
whiteladder42 Posted September 30, 2013 Author #12 Share Posted September 30, 2013 I did call Cunard but they weren't sure because crackers are used on tables at Christmas time and also they couldn't predict what would happen at Brooklyn cruise terminal customs! Thank for your replies, it looks like a hassle and not worth the risk. My American father in law has never experienced the fun of Christmas crackers so thought it would be a good present but will have to find a website that ships internationally I think. My US-born friends now living in Canada have told me that Christmas crackers are - I guess I should say were - unknown in the US. Whatever next- maybe Coronation Street will be shown on US television.

So did we on QM2, but we did not take them on a plane.
Pushka Posted September 30, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 30, 2013 Really? Christmas crackers are an Australian staple on the dinner table! And you really do need to watch out for those little toys - they come with all sorts of choking warnings. :p
