Mattress Issues on Grandeur

We got off the Grandeur on Oct 25th, it was hands down the best cruise we have had in ages! The crew was wonderful, food was good and we even broke even in the casino:D.

The only bad part was having to sleep on our mattress each night! Apparently since the fire the entire bed makeup has gone downhill, Our bed was roughly about 8-9 inches off the floor at most and the mattress was about 6 inches thick. There were no eggcrates available but our room steward put extra pads on but they didn't help. We found it nearly impossible to climb out of this bed every morning. I can't believe some of the other older people didn't have similar issues. The bed had no box springs but a metal frame similar to roll away cots. Sent an email to Mr. Goldstein but haven't received any response.

We had friends in a GS who had an actual bed that looked like a bed and felt very comfortable. I know, you get what you pay for, but we were in a JS and expected a little more comfort than what we had. DH and I both visited our doctor after we got home to get some medication for back pain. He went for a massage during the cruise to see if it would help but it didn't. This was the only dark spot on the entire cruise but it is enough to change our thoughts about Grandeur.

Sorry to hear about you mattress issue. I know fleetwide they rolled out new bedding awhile back and we have always marveled at how divine the mattresses are on RCL ships. Can honestly report the best sleep I have is on a royal cruise. Hopefully it was one bad mattress and you won't encounter that again....K.O.

Thanks for the info, I'm sailing in December and NOBODY is posting anything about the Grandeur. I'm planning on doing a live review, so, that should be fun and I like to post plenty of pics so I can pay it forward for all the info I have gotten over the years.

What itinerary were you on? Did you notice what kinds of parties/ events they had at night. I know the Quest, Love and Marriage, but, what else did they do? Battle of the Sexes? Glow Party? Majority Rules?

Radio is boarding her tomorrow and has already started a live from thread. He always has lots of photos too.

DH and I are scheduled for a cruise on Grandeur next September. Would love to hear any updates on this. This will be our first RC cruise, and if the bedding is that bad, may be our last. :( DH has back trouble and it would be awful if he couldn't enjoy the cruise because of a bad mattress. We've loved the bedding on the Carnival cruises we have been on.

I'm a huge Carnival fan and I love thier mattresses, bedding, etc. and we always sleep well. I am leaving on the Grandeur this Friday and this is my first RC cruise and I agree with you... if the bed is uncomfortable, it'll most likely be my last. :( But I hope I am proven wrong :)

We sailed in the same cabin May and Oct. The only difference we noted in bedding; it was 6 months older in Oct. Not sure what the useful life is for a mattress on a cruise ship, I work in health care and our beds have a useful life of 5-8 years.

I'm being dense here . Are you saying you sailed in Grandeur 7650 and the bedding was okay?

Be sure to let us know how well it compares to Carnival's beds when you get back. Either way, ENJOY your cruise!!

I think all the aft beds are bad. We were on the ship 10/11/2013-10/17/2013 and the bed were horrible. At first we didnt notice until we tried to "hide" our suitcases under the bed, which we always do. they didnt fix. (scratches head) hmmm... that is weird they always fit. Well that night we were beat and didnt really notice how hard and thin they were. the next night we sure did. Our group had 7650, 7654, 7656 and 7156. ALL mattresses were thin and hard. I would have thought their JS would have been fixed better after the fire.

[quote name='cocod08']Just got off the Grandeur today and I found the mattress pretty comfortable the pillows were another story. Too flat I missed my feather pillows.

Which cabin were you in? I believe the "problem" mattresses are only in the few aft cabins which were affected by the Fire last summer. My guess is that they had to replace those few beds in a hurry and now folks are stuck with the result of that decision! :p But, if you did sail in one of those cabins, I will be very happy to hear it! :D

Any recent reports from passengers sailing in any of those deck 7 aft cabins across the very back of the ship?

Thanks Rebecca and Herb. We checked in on the Roll Call. Guess it is so far out that there's not much activity yet. Congrats on the anniversary coming up. We will be celebrating our 20th on the cruise in October. Enjoy your cruise next week!

Worst. Ship. Beds. Ever.

Too low...had to lift to get luggage under the beds....mattress was, too squishy and hard. Don't ask. It wasn't that the mattress was hard, it wasn't, but once you got into bed, it was. I can't describe it really....it was like to sat/laid down on a semi soft bed, then BAM....it's like you're hitting a rock.

Pillows were lousy too. Should have said something, for some reason, I just forgot. My cruise pals also agreed. Some called and got the bed raised: something was put under the legs to lift it up....

Sorry gang, seems Grandeur just has lousy beds....

(PS, i was in an OV on deck 4, about 6-ish cabins from the bow.....where the ship gets narrow. Cabin was nice, bed wasn't... Edited by megr1125

I was deck 3 forward cabin and like Meg said the beds were low but I think I am used to a firm bed so it wasn't a problem for me.

Just off of her today.

The mattresses we had were definitely rough. No two ways about it. I prefer a stiff mattress and still found it uncomfortable.

My DW absolutely hated it. She described it as being way too hard yet somehow lacking support all at the same time.

We were cabin 8565 this cruise and 4046 back in August. We didn't have the same complaint with our mattresses in 4046. Weird.

On a positive note, we found the MDR food much improved over August and had another wonderful cruise.

Just got off Grandeur - I had an inside cabin on deck 3 near the aft stairs - and I agree with everything Meg said re. the beds, the pillows, and that I should have said something but never got around to it.

I could not get my suitcase under the bed even by lifting - there were huge plastic bedding storage bags taking up all the space. Luckily it fit in the closet, but that was much less convenient for storing purchases and dirty laundry as the cruise went on.

Still, a bad day at sea is better than a great day at work - and I was very disappointed this morning when I actually had to make coffee myself ;)
