Crime on cruise ships. Carnival is mentioned in the article

Well I can also go by my limited experience, in which I've taken the same precautions I would for any travel and had no issues. I've never felt anything but safe on the ships. Crime happens everywhere. I see no reason to think it's a greater problem on cruise ships than anywhere else.

Do you know exactly what you would do if you were attacked or a loved one raped? If you do please share because honestly I don't. I know exactly what I would do at home.

Feeling safe doesn't mean it is, considering not all the cruisers are saints, are any? We are taking about cruise cops, which might be in the same category as mall cops, but not kindergarten cop.

I had money stolen from my purse in a casino on a Carnival cruise. Only the cash in one spot was missing. Credit cards, chips, etc were not touched. I had set the purse down between slot machines while playing. There was only one other group of people near me at the time. I reported it. The "security" said the cameras did not cover that area. They spent at least an hour taking a report and searching my cabin saying I may have forgotten where I put it. After all that they said they questioned the other passengers near me who denied taking it. I was told they have no authority to arrest or search anyone without permission. I know it was my fault for putting it down so chalked it up to experience. I always felt fairly safe on ships thinking people cannot escape. Learned two lessons - don't feel too comfortable on a ship and the security can do very little.

I work in law enforcement and without probable cause (you saying they were the only ones near you when you believe it was taken is not probable cause) we can't search a person or their home/vehicle without their permission. So seems security did as much (if not more) than law enforcement could have done.

I know that when you're the victim things look different, but imagine how you would feel if law enforcement or security searched you or your home based solely on someone's word. I do understand how you feel, but saying that security on the ship could do very little is misleading. Wouldn't have matter where this may have happened, no one acting within their authority could do very little.

Where there are people, there is always a chance there is going to be crime (of some sort). Sad, but true.

I am always cuatious when out and about....the thing is to know your surroundings. There are places you can travel (or live) where crime is not an issue and places where you have to be constantly on your game.

On a cruise, with thousands of people, we just use basic old common sense. In most cases, that's all it takes to keep yourself and your belongings safe.

Crime is very often opportunistic!

It's up to you to not-provide the opportunity.

Umm, in the comments below someone was saying that their neighbor was smoking weed

and they had a 3 yo and it was coming into their room.

If that was REALLY the case, I would not have gone back to the room and refused to go back there until they moved me to another room.

I don't care how "full" the ship is. There are always extras somewhere. ===> Really?!

They could put me in one of the officers quarters for all I care,

but I would NOT go back in there. ===> More likely you'll get a cozy 1A :D

I would rather sleep on the deck.

Why would you allow your 3 yo to be exposed to that. ===> Or to Alcohol -or even worse.. to Tobacco!

The comments on their were HORRIBLE. Thank goodness for cruise critic. I would never come on here if I heard stuff like that!

Someone's going to have big problems when That Stuff goes legal in a few years time! :D

THis crime report has come up a few time since July when CNN reported it. And it makes me smile evertime. Sen. Rockefeller at the time was calling for the cruise industry to do things noone else does. First he wanted all crimes listed when they were reported to have happened not after they were invasitaged. So if you claimed someonestole your watch. Then on the last day of the cruise you found it in some corner of the dresser or where evere it would still show as a theft occoured. Plus and here is the big one, given that Sen. Rockefeller normally recives endorsments for law enforcement unions, was for the cruiselines to pay for us law enforcement officers to be on board 24/7 to handle all crime reports.

Yes, I would call ship's security and demand my loved one be taken immediately to the doctor. Is that ideal? No, but I don't plan my vacation worrying about that scenario. If I did I'd never set foot on a cruise ship. They don't carry a full surgical ward either. What if my appendix bursts? I suppose you could go through life worrying about this kind of thing, but I don't see the point. I still haven't seen anything to make me think there's a higher risk of crime on ship than off it.

No disagreements here. I feel safe on a cruise ship but I don't take silly risks either. Valuables go in the safe, I watch our stuff, etc. But to read some of the posts here I'm shocked the posters go on cruises.

About 7 or 8 years ago me and my wife went to get a slice of pizza before bed. We do not drink. We were just minding our business. It was about 11:30 at night. We stopped at a bar to get a bottle of water. There were 2 intoxicated guys at the bar. One of them said something rude to my wife. Something about getting a piece of that. We started to walk away when the second one stood up and stood in front of us. He said something rude to my wife. I told him to please move so we can go to our cabin. His friend came off the bar stool swinging at me. I dodged his punch and the fight was on. Needless to say they both came up on the bad side. I knocked one out and the other was left with a broken bloody nose. Neither landed a punch on me. The bartender called security. Security took them away. Never asked for my name or anything. We took our pizza and water and went to bed.

I tried to walk away but things happen. I doubt there was a report filed or anything.

If it's not reported you many never know. Maybe they are counting on ignorance being bliss. Off the ship I am not counting on mall cops to step in so a bit of a greater concern but I wouldn't go as far to say worry. Ships happen but its about having a plan in place to deal with it and you seem to do!

I agree.

Ignorance is dangerous, knowledge is power and common sense goes a long way. No need to worry or be in a state of fear, just use your head. (LOL, although that is difficult for some, I imagine ;) )

Me neither!

In fact I perceive life on a cruise ship

as being a darned sight safer and more "civilized" than where I live.

It's amazing how some naive folks think that Holiday Mode

translates to I Can Turn Off My Street Smarts Mode.

How does that work for them?

Does it work for them?

Heck if I know. I'm always alert to my surroundings. We also don't tend to hang out around the bars on the ship, so for the most part we've avoided drunken stupidity. Though I did once have a drunk woman drop to her knees in front of me and embarrass the heck out of me when I was in uniform on formal night. That's the worst I've ever dealt with on a ship. Compared to the time a guy threatened to kill me on an airplane (he was black out drunk at the time) cruises have been quite relaxing.

It works for them because they believe if something was not reported it never happened. Nope, nothing can go wrong so don't worry about a thing, every likkle ting is gonna be all right. The person who sang this song was under the infulence:p

:( Sorry this happened to you. Just a thought but in Vegas and on cruises I always carry one of those small purses you can wear across your

body. That keeps me from sitting it somewhere and leaving it and it is always connected to me which makes it less appealing for theft.

Lol. Yeah. I'm not a fighter. I'm 39 years old and haven't been in a fight since high school. But they crossed the line when they made it physical. I had to defend myself and my wife. Funny thing is I am 6 foot 2 and 300 pounds. You think they would of found someone smaller. Lol. Yes from the looks of them they were hurting the next day.

My hubby is 6'2 and about 240-250 and everyone is always afraid of him and he couldn't be nicer. Just goes to show you sometimes alcohol confuses the mind into thinking you can mess with a guy your size - ha. Sorry it had to come to that, but glad you were able to protect yourself and your wife.
