BigMattT Posted November 21, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) Just back from sailing on the Carnival Dream. My apologies if this has been discussed (nothing came up when I searched)... I'm accustomed to the photo taken at check-in for sign-and sail/security. However, Carnival has added a green-screen photo that I was told was mandatory during embarkation. The green-screen photos are loaded into the shipboard photography system for their facial recognition software to find your photos to buy... neat feature. But is it really mandatory to have this photo taken? (I always decline to have my photo taken onboard by Carnivals photographers.) ~Moose Edited November 21, 2013 by matthewthompson87
Colorado Kat Posted November 21, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 21, 2013 Hmmm....Interesting. I can think of all kinds of uses for this, some of which I'm not so keen on.

Lerin Posted November 21, 2013 #4 Share Posted November 21, 2013 Never thought about it and it doesn't bother me. Possibly you could refuse? Not sure it's worth the bother though.

Aplmac Posted November 21, 2013 #7 Share Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) Big Brother goes on cruises too? :D --- Heck, I guess even He "has a life..." Great pity they didn't do this five years ago back when I was still buying a few photos! But with prices the way they are today.... I'm out. Sorry. . Out to sea! Posted November 21, 2013 #8 Share Posted November 21, 2013 Is this referencing the embarkation photo or the photo for the S&S card? I usually skip the embarkation photo (and most other photo ops) as we never buy photos on board.
carsastic Posted November 21, 2013 #9 Share Posted November 21, 2013 its been used for years ( not just in cruise industry) capture a photo /any photo and run it against a database with the right s/w. go to a casino, an atm machine. click and run facial recognition has become very wide spread and cheap today

RWolver672 Posted November 21, 2013 #11 Share Posted November 21, 2013 Is this referencing the embarkation photo or the photo for the S&S card? I usually skip the embarkation photo (and most other photo ops) as we never buy photos on board. We encountered it for the first time on our last cruise on the Freedom. Instead of the embarkation photo, we stood in front of a green screen for our photo. When we went looking at our photos later in the cruise, we found where they had taken our pictures from the green screen and put them in a photo with us looking out a porthole frame. Needless to say, they weren't worth buying. As for the casino, DW put $100 into a slot machine, then went to put her card in it. There was already a card in the slot so she pulled it out and I took it to a waiter who put it on top of a machine. She went to play and found that no money was in the machine. We called for an attendant and explained what had happened. He said the money went to the card that was in it originally. Within minutes, they got the card and came up with a printed picture of the guy. They went around until the found him and somehow or another got the money off his card and put it on DW's. So I know they use them in the casino.
bobsfamily Posted November 21, 2013 #12 Share Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) We no longer get embarkation "photos"... we get the mandatory photo taken when you hand over your SS card for embarkation by the crew. Have not seen the green screen. Edited November 21, 2013 by bobsfamily
mrpayroll Posted November 21, 2013 #13 Share Posted November 21, 2013 We were on Dream Nov.2nd and had the green screen picture taken also. We wondered what it was being used for since they took the usual picture when getting S&S card.

jonbgd Posted November 21, 2013 #15 Share Posted November 21, 2013 RCCL and NCL already use this When looking for photos they are now on a computer linked together. On the Epic they even put them all in one binder for you so you don't have to hunt for photos like you do on CCL:rolleyes:

Cruzin2paradise09 Posted November 21, 2013 #19 Share Posted November 21, 2013 I want to get green t-shirts for our next cruise so that our picture will be a bunch of floating heads and arms :) OMG that is hilarious ... now I'm thinking ... I will be leaving in 2 weeks - maybe my t-shirt of embarkation day will be a white shirt that goes to green towards the bottom of the shirt - about 12" of green at my mid-section. Go ahead - laugh but someone is going to be freaked out when I'm missing only my belly! HAHAHAHAHA!

The photo that is embedded in your S&S card is the one that is taken at checkin and doesn't have anything to do with the green screen which is Carnivals newest photo op so they can put your image against several back drops of your choosing. None of this has anything to do with facial recognition and there isn't any of that being used on Carnival that I know of yet. They were going to do a trial where that software could be used to group all of a persons photos together, but I haven't seen that on any ship that I've been on lately. And no, the embarkation photo that is taken as you board the ship is not mandatory, only the security photo is mandatory and does protect you from someone finding your card and using it to make purchases. Every time your card is swiped your security picture comes up on the register.

The SS photo is not imbedded on your card but is held within the ship computer system. It is associated with your account which is on the card info strip.
