safarigal Posted December 1, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 1, 2013 It looks like yet another cruise ship is in danger of biting the dust. We had a brilliant cruise on the Cunard Countess in 1985, it is sad to see her like this.:( http://www.cruisecurrents.com/article/14593
Rare foodsvcmgr Posted December 1, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 1, 2013 Sadly from what I can see she will most certainly be written off as a constructive total loss. I would expect her next stop will be the breakers of Aliaga or Alang as at her age the damage will be beyond economic repair.
capnpugwash Posted December 1, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 1, 2013 I guess the insurance was just about to run out.
glojo Posted December 1, 2013 #4 Share Posted December 1, 2013 That merchant ship alongside her looks at risk of being another statistic. Thank you for the link and does she look like she is moored and not operational? If neither her, nor that merchant ship have power, will we see those tugs trying to move her away from the merchant ship and into a deep water area? Ray66 Posted December 1, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 1, 2013 The former Cunard Countess has been laid up in port since her charter to UK-based Cruise & Maritime Voyages ended last year. According to reports it was scheduled to return to service next year. http://www.cruisecritic.co.uk/news/news.cfm?ID=5630#
BlueRiband Posted December 1, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 1, 2013 Later images show open flames in front of her funnel and a list to starboard the following morning. I'm afraid she has suffered a major conflagration and she would be destined for Alang regardless of age. Cunard Ambassador served for less then two years before suffering a major fire on a repositioning trip. She was so far gone that Cunard wrote her off although she was converted to a sheep carrier. Eventually she suffered another fire and was broken up after only 13 years total service.
moggi1964 Posted December 2, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 2, 2013 I used to see her in port many times as I worked on the Sun Princess from 81 to 83. Sad end indeed. :(
BlueRiband Posted March 2, 2014 #8 Share Posted March 2, 2014 The extent of the fire sounded bad and this image shows just how bad. Gutted waterline to funnel: ex-Cunard Countess. The investigators should be done by now and she will soon be put out her misery. Sad end for a ship that gave many people happy memories.
