What's the best thing to do in St. Kitts?

Guess DW and I are the contrarians since we take an annual Caribbean cruise to simply have some beach time. In fact, over the years we have developed our own short-list of favorite beaches on many different islands. In the case of St Kitts we normally just grab a taxi to so-called "Shipwreck Beach" which is actually a section of South Friars beach that has a bar/restaurant called "Shipwreck." This bar/restaurant is owned by a very nice couple (I think they are from Canada) and has chair rentals, good food (reasonably priced), some water equipment for rent, etc. The beach also has a close off-shore reef which provides some decent snorkeling. Another popular beach/resort option is to simply go to the Marriott Beach Club located at Frigate Bay...although we personally prefer the non-resort atmosphere of Shipwreck.

:o Sorry, senior moment. Thanks so much for catching this.

In St. Kitts we've always most enjoyed taking the catamaran excursion offered by the ship to Nevis. The beach there is so pretty I always feel as if I'm walking around on a post card. :)

Last time (1/13) we did the same railway with the cat back. It was something different for us. The train part was more fun than I'd expected. :D

We're on the Summit, March 2014, and I don't see any Catamaran options for St. Kitts to Nevis...they have a sea taxi excursion but it involves tour at Nevis and it doesn't tell us how much beach time we have--anyone know?

I'm on the Summit in January, and wanted to go to Nevis too. I had people telling me about this ship's catamaran excursion but I couldn't find it either - I think it was discontinued. But someone on our roll call said one of the tour companies said they were going to start offering a cat tour to Nevis - "St. Kitts Catamaran Sail & Nevis Beach Getaway" through the ship starting next month, so you should keep checking back. I know there's at least one private tour that goes to Nevis as some on our roll call are booked.

I really didn't want a lot of time sailing and snorkeling - I just wanted to go to the beach on Nevis, hang out, swim, snorkel, and have lunch, then come back, but never found anything like that. I wondered about taking that tour excursion and asking if I could just leave the excursion when we got to the dock on Nevis and rejoining for the trip back, and taking a cab to Pinney's beach. But it seemed like a hassle and if I missed the tour coming back, it would be a problem. There aren't very many public ferries coming back to Port Zante in the afternoon - the timing didn't look good for trying to do it on my own. So, we are just going to stay on St. Kitts I think, take a taxi to Cockleshell and rent kayaks ourselves, kayak, lunch, then taxi back. Our second choice is the Shipwreck area of S. Friar's that someone else mentioned.

We did an island tour with Big Mike. A private tour operator that we found at the port. It was supposed to be a couple of hours but I think we ended up being about 3 or so. He took us all around the island stopping at some of the most beautiful points. As well as the batik place, the gardens there are incredible. If I remember right it was like 20 bucks a person maybe a little more. Well worth it, he was entertaining on his own.

We were going to go to the Marriott down near the area where the two oceans meet. So, the Marriott will provide you a complimentary ride to their casino and back (well, maybe back ...definitely there...hahaha). The girls telling us about it said you can just use it for transportation to the beach and not even go in the casino -- but we wanted to check out their casino for a little while, anyway. While we were waiting for the shuttle, Sir Walter talked us into a private tour in his open air bus. I think it was also like $20 pp but he said, if we didn't like it, we didn't have to pay him. So, my question to him about midway through the tour, if we like it so much, do we have to pay double? We tipped him well - he went above and beyond. This was definitely the thing to do in St Kitts -- for us, anyway. It is just funny to me -- Big Mike, Sir Walter -- they all seem to have a nickname -- cute.

We also had an extended tour -- and Sir Walter had a huge ice chest full of cold water and beers for the taking. He wasn't at all stingy about sharing. He took us to some of the most amazing places on the island and we did even see the Marriott, where I would stay in a heartbeat after seeing that beach. He was so friendly and informative and think any other tour would have paled in comparison. He was near the clock tour, as you will see others. I don't think you can go wrong in doing this -- also gave us time to shop in the little area near the pier when we got back.

We did the rail and sail with Royal Caribbean, but would think Celebrity have the same option: The railway half-way there - yes, a bit cheesey but still lots of fun - and then sailed back via catamaran to see some of the coastline. We thoroughly enjoyed it and I would do this excursion again.

We did the rail-n-sail excursion last year, and loved it! It was our stop in St. Kitts, and we thought it was a great way to see a lot of the island, in one day. The train ride may be a bit on the "cheesy" side, but the upper level is a great place to take pictures. Unlike most bus tours, the upper level is open air, so you're not trying to snap photos of the passing scenery through a glass window.

Hi Denny, I took a culinary excursion as well but it was totally different

from yours. They must have changed companies. Mine was 2 sisters

who had moved to St Kitts from the states and part of their home

was turned into a "commercial kitchen" where the views were beautiful

and the food was great too:)

Yours sounds great and something we'd like to try when we get back there. Funny how many similar things we like! We Have to cruise together!

We did a cooking class in Istanbul, not part of a ship tour, and had a great time.
