Ladies - lets talk handbags

The cruise I've been on and the cruise I currently have booked are both super casual (no formal nights), so I only bring 2 purses - my normal handbag/tote that I travel with (although I think I'm going to pick up the Michael Kors Jet Set Multifunction Travel tote before my next cruise - it is gigantic and would be amazing to travel with) and the crossbody bag that I carry with me on the ship and in port.

I am afflicted with "bag and shoe-itis" but for my cruise I just take 5 in total

My travel bag is a Chanel tote that has plenty of room for my ipad, camera and travel documents

I take two beach totes (soft cloth like in gold and one red ) that can be folded into my luggage. I take two only since one year the strap on one broke and I had to buy a rinky dink one from the pier.

and two evening clutches for my compact camera, casino cash, and sign and sale card ( a Judith Lieber minaudiere that goes with everything and Louis Vuitton sunset boulevard clutch) both are small and do not take up too much room.

I wont go into shoes and clothes  but I do prepare a clothing spreadsheet before I travel that is broken down by day and activity to make sure I dont forget anything and try to "control" myself from overpacking....(although I sneak in one or two just in case outfits)

I always wear try on my clothes before I leave from shoes to accessories to make sure it looks the way I want.... from there... it goes on the list and into the suitcase....

Happy travels........

That sounds absolutely FABULOUS!

Love love love your choices in bag couture, as one bag "Aficionado" to another.

Ahhhhhh, the joys of Coco, Louis, Judith, all works of art, and timeless in my opinion.

Happiest travels

After reading everyone's responses, I obviously have an over packing addiction/problem. You don't even want to know how many pairs of shoes, earrings, necklaces, or bracelets I brought with me.

Lisa

Lisa,

I'm with you girl!:D

I take a large tote bag on the plane or even if we drive there. I'll have a small cross-body bag for excursions or walking around the ship. I'll have a straw beach bag to take to the beach or up to the Serenity Deck. For evenings I could have up to 5 evening bags and several wristlets! I am not ashamed!:D

Yeah, let's not get unto how many shoes and costume jewelry, and hats I bring!

I always take a small crossbody bag and a silver wristlet for evening. Usually I also have some kind of larger bag for on the plane; sometimes I use a beach bag for this, but the cruise line we use most does leave a tote bag in our room that I often use in the pool area or at the beach instead.

So, I guess the answer is two to three. I just don't want to pack more than that and I'm really not a purse person anyway.

hmmm, let's see . . . my regular bag, a dressy crossbody, a drawstring backpack for excursions.

Shoes -- a pair of sneakers, a pair of boots, and a pair of sandals. All in neutrals, so versatile.

Jewelry? Seven necklaces and 15 pairs of earrings because I have trouble deciding until the last minute what earrings I'm going to wear.

Boy, I'm in the minority here! I carry a crossbody on the plane and bring a 31 beach bag for the beach. While on the cruise I never carry a purse. I have my sail and sign in my pocket or around my neck. On excursions I either bring my beach bag or a sling bag I got from Cruise Critic. I love handbags but find it freeing not to have to carry one :)

I just got what I hope to be a perfect bag for me. It's cross body, but has an adjustable strap so I can make it a shoulder bag. Not too big so I don't stuff it heavy, but not so small I can't take what I need. Lightweight…I've been trying forever to get away from leather, but every fabric bag I see…just not right for me. It's actually a little dressier looking in person than the photo shows.

I haven't decided whether or not to take it on our next cruise. It would look nice for day or evening, but it's just a whole lot larger than my normal travel bag. I usually take a small Bric's bag, called an envelope (cross body style), but then I need an evening bag as well because it's so casual. Mine is similar to this, but in a black nylon, they no longer make it.

A zip top is critical to me. Too many times over the years I've had purses get knocked over and the contents spill out. Even my tote bags have zip tops.

Hey Lois. Fortunately, I didn't pay full price for either bag. The Bric's bag was nylon, not leather and I bought it with an employee discount. The Eric Javits bag, I had some Nordstrom gift cards that I had been saving for some time and I paid out of pocket less than half of the final total. It was more than I normally would pay, a bit of a splurge for me. I feel like I made a good investment with this bag.

I do believe in buying quality rather than quantity, especially handbags and shoes. The Eric Javits bag should last years, not just a season or two. I've been admiring them for years, the weave on the bag is so soft, the construction impeccable. I normally buy good leather bags, but they just get so heavy. I've compared straw bags over the years, but so many of them are rougher to the touch and I've had clothing snagged on straw bags in years past. I'm not a fan of stuff like Vera Bradley, even though I own some travel totes and accessory pieces and we sell the stuff in the luggage store. I kept thinking my Bric's bag is nice, but it's a travel bag, too casual for everyday use.

When I went Nordstrom shopping, my intent was to buy clothing with my gift cards. There was absolutely nothing I saw that I wanted to buy, I did consider makeup for a few minutes, but then went down to the handbag department to look at their new spring/summer bags. Believe me, I went through the whole department with a fine tooth comb, but kept coming back to this bag.

I'm very happy with it :):):)

I love it! It's a beautiful straw bag!:D I'm glad you're happy with it because that's what really counts. I know what it's like to see a handbag you love and just have to have it! It happens to me a lot!:D

p.s. My Eric Javits is the Antique w/black trim, not the natural color.

That's a beautiful bag.

Can you tell me if the "antique" part of the coloring (on the bag you got) is truly a brown color, or is it an intermixing of the lighter color with black? I can't tell from the online photo. If it were the latter, I would seriously consider it.

Also, about how much can you put into it? Could I fit, say, a wallet, sunglasses, very small makeup bag and my Kindle?

Funny, I just got a suggested post on FB show up from Nordstrom on the Escape bag in Navy. I don't have Nordstrom "liked" on FB.

Too much money for me also, but if that's what you like and it works, than go for it.

I had a hard time putting out the money for my PacSafe bags at $70 and $80, but I love them both.

I'm getting better though and really want a small or medium sized Dooney and Burke bag when I find the right pattern and style.

I brought three on my last cruise. A LeSportSac tote for my important stuff at embarkation, a nylon Ameribag for port and a Baggalini just large enough to schlep my Kindle around the ship.

I just bought myself a hobo-type, bucket bag at TJ Maxx. It's got white and rust colored nautical stripes and faux leather trim in a dark tan. I also found a pair of leather sandals to match the leather trim of the bag.

Tip:D

While I was looking at bags at TJ's, I noticed that there were a lot of Dooney & Burke bags. There were many different styles, sizes, and colors. I didn't get one this trip because the bag I got caught my eye right away. Since you mentioned you're looking for a new Dooney...I thought you might like to know.;)

For Sadie N...TJ's also has a ton of LeSportSac and Baggallini bags in all shapes and sizes in case you're looking for more. LOL!

Thanks for the info. We don't have TJ Maxx up here but I will try to find one for next time we cross the border.

I look in Marshalls and Winners up here sometimes but haven't seen anything interesting.

Maybe I'll have to splurge and get a D&B Disney bag if we get there in August after our cruise.

The lighter color is not brown, it appears so in the photo, but it is the antique color.

The bag is large enough for everything you mention. I need to carry medical supplies with me at all times, which is why I chose this bag. The measurements they give on the Nordstrom web site are correct 13 1/2 W X 11 H X 3 1/2 D, the bag is narrower towards the top.

I am confused??? I haven't been on a cruise before. Our first one is a gift. You said carrying around a bag for the pool on the ship is a newbie mistake? How so? When I go to ANY pool in the world, I ALWAYS bring a bag with my stuff in it. Please explain? Maybe I misunderstand the situation?

Thank you!

Some people don't want to carry a bag and some do. Individual choice. I don't think it's a newbie mistake, I've been on more than 20 cruises and I will carry a purse at times, sometimes I use my pockets. It depends on what you want to have with you.

I've read some posts over the years you can always tell a newbie by new sneakers. Just not true. My husband likes to get new sneakers shortly before we leave, he's been on more cruises than me. People just shouldn't make general assumptions about others.

Thank you! I just can't imagine heading to a pool carrying a book and/or magazine, sun-block, water, lip balm and all the other stuff my son and husband cram in there. I don't want to embarrass my in-laws but I also want to have what I need when I need it with me.
