Scriv Posted March 5, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 5, 2014 We are off on a Baltic cruise mid June and just hope that we will still be able to visit St Petersburg given the current diplomatic issues with Russia. Has anyone had their cruise itinerary changed in similar circumstances? I am wondering what happens if so? Does P&O shorten the cruise or visit somewhere else? Keeping fingers crossed that it does not progress to this stage of course. I would be soooo disappointed as I am so excited about St P.
Scorpio41 Posted March 5, 2014 #2 Share Posted March 5, 2014 I wouldn't of thought so unless something really serious happens and then I think stopping at St Petersburg would be the least of peoples worries. We are cruising there in May. :)

Monorail Orange Posted March 5, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 5, 2014 I don't really envision the FCO issuing an advisory against St. Petersburg at the moment. If you were stopping in Sochi then it might be a little different..;)
silver service Posted March 5, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 5, 2014 How about the Black Sea ports? Going there in September.
Comeondown Posted March 5, 2014 #6 Share Posted March 5, 2014 Also going there in September, hope its all good by then, 2 ports really looking forward too.
mrmarley Posted March 5, 2014 #7 Share Posted March 5, 2014 We are also doing Black Sea cruise in September. If troubles not sorted then would cruise be cancelled or ports changed?
simonpjd Posted March 5, 2014 #8 Share Posted March 5, 2014 They will change the itinerary but keep length of cruise the same. But this is all a long way off - with a bit of luck it will all have calmed down by then. I see Mr Putin has been put forward for the Nobel Peace Prize so we can all sleep easy in our beds !!!! Scriv Posted March 5, 2014 Author #9 Share Posted March 5, 2014 All the other ports are fine, so we should be ok. I wasn't imagining major warfare, but was just wondering what might happen if the uk imposed sanctions on Russia and we were not allowed to go. jeanlyon Posted March 5, 2014 #10 Share Posted March 5, 2014 Even if the UK imposed sanctions, it wouldn't stop you going to a Russian port. Sanctions only stop Russians from visiting our shores. Plenty of places in the Black Sea besides Russia.
bigjewels Posted March 6, 2014 #11 Share Posted March 6, 2014 Why on earth would you want to spend money in a place like Russia? I have always wanted to visit. to see St Petersburg, but always had doubts due to stories about personal safety. Now would definitely not. If I went on a Baltic cruise, I would stay on board the ship when it doscked in Russia...

I know a chap who lived in St Petersburg (and married a Russian woman from St Pete) and a relative visits regularly - he has a visa and speaks Russian. They both say that St Pete is very safe. Both of them would regard Moscow as a much dodgier place - much less understanding of tourists there.
simonpjd Posted March 6, 2014 #14 Share Posted March 6, 2014 Bigjewels - you need your big bumps felt! St Petersburg is the bigjewel of a Baltic cruise. Did you know that London is closer to Crimea than St Petersburg !

Monorail Orange Posted March 7, 2014 #16 Share Posted March 7, 2014 Why would stopping in Sochi make a difference, our Paralympic team are there at the moment? Only because its the nearest Russian port I could think of.
jeanlyon Posted March 7, 2014 #17 Share Posted March 7, 2014 You'd probably be in far more danger in Jamaica than you would in St Petersburg. Don't write off a beautiful place for no reason :-(
Scriv Posted March 7, 2014 Author #18 Share Posted March 7, 2014 I have no worries whatsoever in visiting St Petersburg, but I would have to go on an organised tour. I don't care whether it is P&O organised or private, but I would not feel safe on a DIY tour.
Big Paul Posted March 8, 2014 #19 Share Posted March 8, 2014 I am considering this cruise in may. does anyone know of the weather conditions at this time of year.
Ataraxia Posted March 8, 2014 #20 Share Posted March 8, 2014 I was lead to believe that unless you had a Russian Visa you were only allowed off the ship in any Russian port if you were on an approved trip.
