Working out the "smoking thing"

I don't smoke but my partner does

and will go out on the balcony for a short smoke then come back in. Liked to smoke in the casino bar while I played. Now has to sit at a machine and use up my quarters when she could be spending money in the bar. I don't smell the smoke while on the balcony across from her. I do smell perfume from other balconies and in the halls.

You are accustomed to her smoke and that is likely why you do not smell it. Smokers themselves do not have any idea how offensive the odor can be to many non-smokers. They don't know how their clothes, hair and skin smells to those who abhor that smell.

What does perfume have to do with smoking? Answer is nothing.

It is no more pertinent to the subject than are tattoos and overweight issues that were mentioned above.

The OP made this a smoking thread; not the 'change the subject' other issues.

But did they have tattoos and wear too much perfume? :D

No, but they left a trail of powder and make up every where they went and on everything thing they touched.

They also had the cloth hankie they sneeze and wipe their nose with. The hankie was often tucked in their blouse when not pointing with it or placing it on the table.

Sail is right one on this one! I have been smoke free for over a year now and I never knew that my closet, my clothes and my car smelled so bad! I truly thought that I had a good sense of smell when I was smoking. Not so! I do not hate the smell of cigarette smoke, nor will I tell someone to not smoke where they are allowed, but if anyone who smokes thinks that they do not affect others, they are wrong. JMHO.

HAL lover......

Congratuatlions on being smoke free for a year. Well Done!!

It is probably one of the single best things you ever did for yourself.

You should be very proud of yourself as it probably was hard to give them up.

Yes, but only here on CC.

Actually, we've heard those references uttered while aboard HAL ships, specifically Westerdam and then Veendam last August. Some of non-smoking friends who cruise will not consider sailing HAL because of their smoking policy. They don't come to CC so we discussed it 'outside of CC."

HAL smoking policy allows smoking on the balcony. I cruise with my Mother <<She smokes. :( We get a state room with a balcony just for that reason. So she can smoke anytime she wants. We always hang around the Aft part of the ship near sea view bar. There she can smoke.

I find it to be very restricting. LOL If we went anywhere it could only be for short periods at a time before my mom would say. (Im going for a smoke)

When we fly/travel she wears nicotine patches to get through the long day/evening. She hates the airports only because again (you can't smoke anywhere in there) When you are catching the next flight there is no time for her to (go for a smoke)

We rarely eat in the MDR <<you know why? LOL It takes too long and my Mother gets fidgety by the second course LOL

I put up with her addiction. :D I not going to say it does not bother me because it does.

I used to smoke too. 12 years ago. I quit :D I understand what this addiction is like and its a hard habit to break.

There are things that smell a LOT worst than cigarette smoke - you obviously haven't lived!!

Anyway, many of you would be surprised that some of your relatives and friends smoke. It's ONLY on shore in the US and on cruises that I've had people bumming ciggies from me - all Americans!! These peope tell us that their families don't know they smoke!! This has happened on at least 3 occasions - not just a one off.

Sooo, these government figures of 20% are nowhere near correct, just what you'd like to believe.

What? My private spaces will no longer have that stale cigarette smell. I don't mind public spaces that allow smoking. Cigarette smoke smell is not the worst for sure... but once one quits the habit they can understand where a non smoker hates it.

Thank you Sail. Yes, it was hard at times but I wanted it. Thats the key to breaking the addiction to nicotine, you have to want it.

BUT.. for those that currently smoke... I support your right. (in the allowed areas!).

You think non-smokers should book starboard cabins? Won't work for me' date=' I like the port side.[/quote']

Hi

Me either I love port side cabin whey should I give up the prt side cabin for someone who smokes.. I have no problem with someone soming next to me as long as they do not smoke 5 times in a hour. Why don't you try the starbord side. I hade someone who smoked a cigar next to me on my pamana cruise. He was out there a few times I smelled the smoke a few times but I was not going out on balcony at the time. I fell in love with balconey's this person respected other passengers. I remember once I was out on balcony eating lunch. They saw me eating left the balcony. thus no smoke.. they had friends is the next cabin. A lot of noise the first night never heard them again. so you can smoke, but just remember you next door cruise member.

Hi

I have no problem with you smoking I just do not want to smell it. Having lost a dad from smoking and a mother from second hand smoke I have no desire to follow them. I felll yes let you smoke on balcony but not 24/7. If you nieghbor is out on deck ask them if its bothering them. maybe you can work out something. both paid to have a great trip I think within reason we can come up with a soultion.

HAL's rule is that passengers can smoke on their balconies. They can smoke on their balconies as much and as often as they chose. HAL asks that smokers smoke on their balconies rather than in their stateroom. These people are only following the rules. Why do you have a problem when they are simply following the rules?

I believe they were just asking for compromise. Work WITH your neighbor who paid the same (most likely) for their cabin. Be reasonable rather than be a horse's rear end.

I am the original poster. I wasn't asking for 50/50 on all cabins on a ship. I was merely making what I thought was a little peace offering for a way to mitigate the hate that this issue seems to perpetuate.

My husband and I are 65 and 70, eat healthy, work out, take no prescriptions, and are in excellent health. We smoke. No, we don't do drugs, although in Ohio our smoking and wine drinking would apparently lead to heroin usage??!!

We HATE fat people and tattoos!!! There, I've said it. Would I say it to some one who was fat or tattooed, or heaven help us, both?? No way. Why are my eyes (having to look at fat and tattoos) worth less than someone's nose??!!

I say all this somewhat in the vein of pointing out how ridiculous it is when we try to control and judge others and their lives. We used to live in a civilized and polite society. I have tried to bite my tongue when others comment on my smoking. I will no longer do that if the person talking to me is overweight. None of us live in glass houses.

Can't we all please tone it down, be considerate as possible, and learn to live together?

Thanks Ellie and Sam for the only kinds thoughts I received.

Your original post was interesting but alas totally impractical.

This post is just as rude as the ones you are complaining about. Just because some of people posted what you felt were negative responses to you, you had to go on a rant about "fat people"?

HAL has decided to limit smoking to certain areas of the ship and one of these is to balconies. So a passenger who follows the rules and smokes on their balcony is a horse's rear end if he or she simply refuses to work with a neighbour who refuses to accept HAL's smoking rules?

Use to be that a reasonable person was one who accepted and followed the rules and not one who demands that the rules not apply to them.

Gotta love that logic

How sweet it is! BOTH a smoking and a dress code thread back on the HAL front page. Another chance for those who cannot stand the fact that other people think differently from them, to hammer the offenders without mercy.

Enjoy!:D

I grew up in a family of smokers--- at last count the number of smokers was over 20... for some reason I never smoked.. probably economics -- did not have enough money for cigarettes. . Once I was able to get a balcony.. I never even worried about smoke. I recently started to notice it ... however I never found it a problem on my balcony.... I only have noticed it as I walked by the casino.
