We're sorry we strayed Celebrity, PLEASE take us back!!!

I think you have a point.

We are elite on Princess and Celebrity, cruise HAL 2Star, Cunard and NCL presently. I think the OP picked the wrong NCL ship, I would not go on the new Breakaway any more than I would go on the new Royal Princess -- both big ships. We cruised on the NCL Jade in the Mediterranean a year or so ago, we had a mini suite thought the cabin was very nice even better than Princess or other lines. The MDR not so, we stayed with the buffet the entire 11 nights after our first day. The food and service in the MDR was not good enough for us to try the speciality restrauants. For the price, NCL was okay. You do get what you pay for so to speak. We figured that when we booked, we had not been on NCL in 10 years at the time. We liked the itinerary, had 3 days in Israel, so we booked it.

We also don't think the food and service in the MDR on Celebrity is that great. We have always had better food and servcie on Princess, HAL and Cunard. Celebrity does not do special orders off the menu very well compared to other lines. So we stick with the buffet on Celebrity too.

Each line has its pluses and minues, we cruise mostly for the itinerary. These ships are floating hotels for us. We are not champions for any line. We simply look for what works for us. The only way you know is to try a line out.

We are booked on the Silhouette in October, going back to Israel. We will be eating in the buffet, booked a 1B cabin, since all cabins are the same. Do not see the value in booking CC or AQ class on these ships. We tried BLU a few years ago, not for us. As I say, try it for yourself, live and learn.

Give the MDR a try a couple of nights. We have found the food to be much improved over the last 2-3 yrs. You will love the gorgeous Silhouette:D It's our favourite ship!

My post had nothing to do with smoking. Is there a reason you are referring to it ??????

You told us why you haven't sailed Celebrity again. She told you why she wouldn't sail NCL or Princess. I'm not sure why there's confusion.

Like anything in life, some people have differing tastes to others. The cruise industry realise this and as such have differing products to cater for cruise community. Some will prefer one over the other. The main thing is if you are not happy with one line, do the research and try another, chances are it may be to your taste.:D

Oh how they try to trick you! Oh how they entice you with forbidden fruit! And now, we have erred against our beloved =X=! We have bit into the apple and now are ashamed. Why, why, WHY did we do it? Whyyyyyyyyy? :(:(:(:(

We had been talking about cruising to Bermuda this year, when, lo, appearing in the inbox is a harmless looking offer, granting us a FREE weekend cruise aboard the NCL Sky if only we book passage on the NCL Breakaway bound for Bermuda. Is it fate? NO!!! Do not be tempted by the likes of them! But no, we gave in to temptation and now wonder if our beloved =X= will ever welcome us back onto their precious gangways. Will we ever taste of the hallowed waffles again?

For us, cruising is the greatest experience in the world, so if someone offers us a BOGO, that’s a bonus, right? Not so fast. Not that everything was bad on the Breakaway, it’s just that the NCL product is not for us. In full disclosure, we’re professed Celebrity snobs, so you probably know where this is going.

It was great to at least see our beloved Summit in port next to us, taunting us with her beautiful lines, ship-shapely curves, and promises of few announcements. But we just HAD to be greedy.

Let’s talk about the NCL Breakaway. She’s a BIG ship, but I think that NCL has tried too hard to do things that other ships don’t do, and in doing so took their eye off the important stuff. For one thing, the pool is WAY too small for the gazillion people on the ship. They thought that a rope-climbing course would be more entertaining. The ropes took up the space where another pool would have been much more utilized. Other issues include the extremely uncomfortable seats in the theater. For a ship that is only a year old, the seats I sat in were almost unbearable. They felt cheaply made and not very cushy for the tushy.

Much has been written about 678, the atrium area of the ship. BIG fail here as the cigarette smoke from the casino permeates the entire area, making it most unpleasant. Yuck! Too bad they can’t enclose the casino (or make it smoke-free, but that is NOT going to happen, of which I will discuss more later). We loved the multi-colored chandelier though. We have several pictures with it in the background. Nice!

Our cabin was very nicely appointed. It was a standard balcony cabin in all aspects of the word, EXCEPT for the less-than-average size of the balcony. If you picture your average sized balcony, take the chair, turn it sideways, and that is the width of the Breakaway balconies. I didn’t measure it specifically but this was a big disappointment. And even if you plan to enjoy your mini-balcony, you get smoked out by NCL’s dated smoking policy. I’ll gripe about that later.

The food was another disappointment. Our first night we dined in the Manhattan Room, which is one of the three main dining rooms. The food was horrible. We’re trying to figure out if they make the dining room food of lesser quality so you are more apt to go to a specialty dining room where they can charge you. The food was either cold, flavorless or just unappetizing. Same with O’Sheehan’s pub, although the prime rib there wasn’t too bad, just needed seasoning. Worst food we’ve had on a cruise. Conversely, the specialty restaurants we went to were very good. Also, the buffet food was pretty good throughout the cruise, so if you don’t want to pay more for your food, you might be better off going to the buffet every night. Also, the Chef’s Table was fantastic but way overpriced. We’ve done a CT on Princess, Royal and Celebrity, and in every instance we were given a recipe book. I guess NCL doesn’t do that either, though they charge the same as the others. The chef said he’d send the recipes to our cabin, but never did.

The entertainment got pretty high marks from us, possibly even better than you know who. I don’t want to say it too loudly or else it might seal the deal and we’ll never be allowed back on =X=.

The service was just ok. On Celebrity, everyone who meets your gaze (and even some that don’t) greet you. Not on NCL and we really missed that. It makes us feel like everyone is appreciative of our patronage. It took two days before we even met our cabin steward, though on Celebrity they pretty much greet you when you first enter your cabin.

All in all, NCL doesn’t work for us. We don’t like the whole Freestyle experience. Though many people did dress up on one night, it was only about 30% of the total. Very sad. We like formal nights and I hate the feeling that I am the dressed up oddball when formal nights used to be one of the great traditions of cruising. I also have to complain again about the smoking policy. Most of the other lines have eliminated smoking from balcony cabins and wish that NCL was as progressive in their policy. I’m all for a person’s freedoms, but when it encroaches on my freedoms, I get upset.

We’ll take our freebie NCL Sky cruise but that might be the last time that NCL sees us on one of their ships. We can now only hope that =X= will forgive us our transgression and welcome us back with open arms. Maybe. <sigh>

Fortunately for us-we had heard such poor reviews from NCL Breakaway customers at the port last year in Bermuda, we decided that for now, we will stick to the Summit and cancelled a pending NCL "tryout" cruise.

We do love Celebrity, but also enjoy Royal Caribbean. The new ships on RCL are very well done-excellent crowd control and a wonderful adults only pool. The entertainment is the best at sea, IMO.

Since Celebrity and RC are owned by the same parent company, when we are on RC, we feel like we are on Celebrity's hip younger sister!

Enjoy your cruises!

I agree. We have cruised with RCI many times and always enjoyed all of our cruises with them. We then tried X and liked it even more but now feel that we have two solid cruise lines to choose from depending on ships. Those Oasis class ships are amazing.

NCL was okay as the crew was nice and helpful but IMHO the last two NCL cruises could not match up to RCI or X. The MDR and lido dining was very disappointing. Felt like a budget cruise line because of that.

First of all I will say that Celebrity is our cruise line of choice. We have sailed Celebrity, Carnival, NCL, Royal Carribbean, Azamara, and Princess. Approx. 4-5 years ago, we sailed on the NCL Sun in a deal we couldn't refuse. There wasn't anything I felt objectionable, and the production shows were the best I have ever seen. They had contracted with an entertainment company to provide the shows and there were quite a few Russian dancers performing who took my breath away. The only one of the cruise lines I will not cruise with again is Carnival. Carnival is the only cruise line I have sailed on where we had something stolen which was our camera. A camera can be replaced but not the pictures.

We like NCL.

IMHO, you made a mistake in not researching the ship. I'm not a mega-ship guy regardless of line - not my style.

We prefer anytime dining and have avoided lines that didn't offer some variation.

We book based on itinerary, then ship. From line to line, they're about the same. I'm a value person so I evaluate overall cost (not the cheapest). I've typically found X to be overpriced for my needs. Carnival is normally the cheapest but if I would ever take them again (my DW hates them) I have to adjust my expectation downward.

To me, a cruise is a cruise is a cruise. Never had a bad one:).

I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments. Happy to see that I agree with some and disagree with others. We're all different.

I enjoy Carnival when I just want to kick back and relax. I loved the Carnival Breeze. Although a big ship, the new layout was great and I never felt like I was in a long line. Love the pizzas, Guy's Burgers, and kicking back to watch something on the big screen. It's my hotel on water and I get to see different ports.

It's been a while, but when our son was 11 we went on Royal Caribbean. The food was blah, but the shows, kids program and buffet were great. I know we'll try one of the new mega ships when the itinerary is right for us and we want a city/hotel on water.

For a port intensive, i need to relax on sea days experience. I'll pick Celebrity. We have only been on one Celebrity Cruise to Southeast Asia last year. I loved the lack of children. I loved the service - in fact that was my favorite part. I felt like part of the family. The MDR was okay, but the specialty restaurants were great. The poached egg bar and Cafe al Bacio - we still talk about. We just booked a Panama Canal - South America cruise on The Infinity. With The Prepaid Gratuities and Classic Beverage Package, we're sold. Our TA added $300 obc. Sea days to relax and great itinerary and service. We can't wait. The shows are lacking on Celebrity.

Keep cruising!

There is no valid reason to refer to my post. I did not elaborate on my "unpleasant experience" and will not do that because I don't need to disparage any cruise line. If others need to do that to try to make their favorite line seem better, that is their choice.

We tried NCL a few times and for awhile there, it was my DH's favorite cruise line. Why?? He never had to dress up and dinner was where and when you wanted it. We were at the breakfast table on either a Princess or Celebrity cruise and he mentioned to our table mates that NCL was his favorite and one lady questioned him, "what, did you fall up the stairs backwards?". I will never forget that, it was so hilarious.

Anyhow, once Princess and then Celebrity started the Select Dining / Personal Choice dining, we've not returned to NCL or the traditional seating for dinner. Celebrity gets our votes all the way now, especially when you are able to purchase a specialty dining package just to leave the formal clothes at home!

While we still so stray from Celebrity, the choice is made because they no longer have itineraries from the west coast...or at least they are few and far between. We usually do an Alaskan cruise on them every year but for the winter and spring cruises (when we are lucky enough to do 3 cruises in a year), we usually go with Princess.

We experienced the same in Bermuda. Mostly it was the lack of public space for the number of passengers on board, small balconies, and tiny pool. There was only one food complaint and the guy ripped them pretty good but others were happy with the food and entertainment. No one we talked to said they would sail Breakaway again when we asked. It was little discouraging but we still may take her for spin.

I'm a newbie as compared to some other cruisers on this forum, but I'm loyal to royal Caribbean and celebrity. These 2 sister companies have delighted me from the first time I've cruised with them and hence found no reason to even try another cruise liner.

Yes some may be less expensive but I know what I'm getting for my hard earned and hard saved holiday money and have had 4 of the most amazing holidays when I've cruised.

Celebrity would welcome anyone back. There are many many cruisers who try other lines. If they did not welcome you back they would have a lot less customers. I would not even care if they wouldn't welcome back. There just another mass Market cruise line and and they are not part of my family. There just a cruise line nothing more and nothing less.

I was just on the NCL Sky last month. The ship was clean and the crew all appeared to be happy to be on the ship. They all greeted me with a smile, and when passing in the passageways, were always pleasant.

One thing I did notice on the Sky (my only NCL cruise) was all the officers that I saw walking around the passageways and venues would stop and talk with people, us included...They sounded sincere and were seeing how we were doing and would answer any questions they could. That is a first on all the lines I have been on...and I liked that!!!

The Sky had 2 free restaurants we ate at for dinners. Both had good food and good service.

I would have no problem going on another cruise on the Sky.

Hope you have the same experience...

I had the opposite experience that you did. I won a cruise on the Norwegian Sky through a casino in RI and figured I'd make it two weeks so I booked the second week on the Norwegian Getaway. When I first walked on the Sky I was disappointed in it's look but by the time the cruise was in full swing we had a great time and the Getaway was awesome. I commented on the fact that every person no matter what their position was on the ship acknowledged us when they walked by. Now let me tell you I'm not a Norwegian cruiser I actually was a Celebrity Queen then moved over to RCL and loved them, now doing a cruise in January on Celebrity. I'm sure they will let me back:rolleyes: I firmly believe all cruise lines are the same they just offer different things on each of them. You are definitely right about the balcony being small and I found the storage in the rooms to be lacking, but everything else on the ship was great. And I know my Celebrity cruise will be awesome. I guess the bottom line is it's all in what you like and are looking for. There are so many different opinions that my motto is try it and see if you like it. I even did Carnival and had a wonderful time. So good we did them 3 more times. Glad your coming back to what you love best but I'd do the Sky you'll enjoy it.

I also strayed from celebrity and went on NCL Getaway and it was one of the best cruises I have ever been on. Ate at the specialty restaurants every night and the food was excellent. Also the entertainment was the best I've seen in quite a while. I also enjoyed the free style concept. Everyone is different and I have many good times on Celebrity and I would cruise with them again. It was something different on NCL and the ship was beautiful and eating on the waterfront every night was also a nice experence. I also would cruise with them again. All the cruise lines have dummy down the food in the MDR and Celebrity is no different. There MDR food is nothing like it once was and for a decent meal you have to go to there specialty restaurents.

So you had to pay MORE for food? Doesn't that sound a little off to you? I don't pay any more to dine in the =X= MDR and their food is 10X better. I shouldn't have to pay more just for "decent" food. A nicer experience, yes, but a decent dinner? Not a chance. Makes no sense.

We couldn't enjoy dining on the Waterfront because somewhere, someone was smoking nearby and it ruined our dining experience. We asked to be moved inside.

It amazes me how so many people think different = bad.

I agree that NCL's big dining room is not great, but their (also free) smaller one is quite good. The select MDR on my last 2 celebrity cruises have been very disappointing. NCL has a lot more choice (with a bigger variety of price points) of specialties though.

(P.S. The smoking rules on NCL are definitely behind the times, Celebrity does win hands down on that one.)

The free food in the smaller dining rooms (Taste and Savor) is the exact same food as in the Manhattan, so it also was horrible.

My post had nothing to do with smoking. Is there a reason you are referring to it ??????

Maybe because it is MY OP and I'm the one who referred to the dated NCL smoking policy.

I think you will enjoy the Summit we sailed on her in May. The general feel of the ship is what cruising was like going back 10 to 15 years ago, so if you love the assigned seating and formal nights, the Summit is the ship for you… Her crew is awesome, the shows were good.

We've been on the Summit and LOVED her. We'll be back, hopefully soon!

We took NCL up on a good balcony deal on Epic. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable cruises for us. I didn't like the service or the smoking policy, but my tiny balcony cabin, entertainment, and specialty restaurant meals were to my liking. My husband still talks about how much he enjoyed that cruise and the food. I think that he forgot that we ate in specialty restaurants four out of the seven nights. They were priced more reasonably than the X restaurants.

How could it have been one of the most enjoyable experiences you've ever had if you didn't like the smoking? Also, to each his own, but how could it have been an enjoyable experience with what you called a "tiny" balcony? Those are two pretty big deals and certainly would not rate into an enjoyable cruise experience for me.

I am glad you have found what works for you, and that you enjoy it. But since this was your FIFTH NCL cruise, was it really that much of a surprise. I have been on all of the ships you have been on except the Breakaway, and they are all still dishing out the same product you received from them in 2006 and 2008.

Celebrity is my line of choice, but I go on NCL because their casino program is far superior to Celebrity's. But I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the smoking situation and I wish they could change it.......

Good question, but our previous four sailings were not THIS bad. Like I said, the lure of a free cruise did us in. Out of the lines we've sailed, NCL has managed to land at the bottom of our faves list. We certainly will not sail with them again (after the freebie) at least until they change their smoking policy. Couldn't use the casino because the "ambiance" was awful in there.

I'll happily take that Sky cruise off your hands. I like that little ship. Sure, I prefer Celebrity, but have enjoyed both of my NCL cruises (Sky and Epic). Different product, different experience. And oh the pretzel rolls!

We were on the Sky once before. It was ok (service good one day, bad the next). But this time I'm taking our bed bug spray with us. The Mrs. will be happier.

As you noticed that the OP had 6 NCL cruises, perhaps you would have also noticed that prior to the recent one they had last cruised NCL in 2008. Since then, they have cruised 14 times on X, RCI, MSC, Carnival and Princess. It is horses for courses and people's needs and wants evolve. The OP now realises they prefer the X product to the NCL product, but it wasn't all negative.:D

That's what I was going to say! Thanks!

I really feel that NCL made a HUGE mistake when they designed this ship with such a small pool. 4,900 pax and one small pool. There were so many people surrounding the small pool that it was actually pretty nasty.

For us, it was mostly the smoking and the food. I paid for food already. Whereas I do like to dine at the specialty restaurants, if I choose not to, the food in the MDR should be decent, which it was not. The buffet was better.

We've been a more than 40 cruises now, mostly on Celebrity and Princess, but quite a number on Cunard, RCCL, and several others. We've never tried Carnival or NCL. There are plusses and minuses to all of them, and, frankly, having read many of these posts, I can tell you I don't trust any of the comments. Why should I? I don't know any of you, so I have no basis to trust your insights. You may be right, you may be wrong. It all comes down to personal taste, so I guess I'll have to see for myself. :) Princess, Celebrity, RCCL, Cunard-I don't believe I can go to far wrong with any of them. Sure, none of them is perfect, and I can find something to complain about or dislike with each of them, but perfection in anything is rarely found, especially a midrange prices.

I have seen most of your totally negative posts about NCL, and have to comment that you are criticizing YOUR OWN CHOICES !!!

The smoking policies, cabin size, balcony size, pool size, and most of the other items you mention are all available to you BEFORE BOOKING.

You chose the cruise, and nothing you are complaining about has changed recently.
