How much do you feel the rocking of the ship?

Recommended Posts

I said most don't, not all. Where does Carnival use anchors?

If most cruise ships do not use anchors, can you enlighten me as to what this chain is? Typically, an anchor is attached to an identical chain. As you can probably tell, this is the Carnival Freedom performing tender operations in Grand Cayman.

Traveling from Ship to Shore

At some ports, the ship will anchor off shore, and guests are taken to shore by small boats called tenders. Even if the ship is scheduled to dock at a pier, it can change to tendering.

Guests with assistive devices who are unable to take a few steps will be unable to board tenders unless roll-on capability is available.

In order to safely board most tenders, guests must be able to take steps and use a collapsible manual wheelchair. In addition, motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters can not be taken on tenders, unless roll-on capability is available. Inquire about tender roll-on capability at Guest Relations Desk while on board. Please note roll-on capability is not guaranteed.

Weather, sea conditions and other factors may preclude tendering. Safety of our guests and crew is our primary consideration, and the Captain and his staff will make the final decision regarding transferring guests and their assistive devices based on safety reasons.

If guests are unable to tender or disembark because of due to these circumstances, there will be no refund or credit for missed ports. While we recognize your disappointment, the safety of our guests and crew takes precedence.

Should have said most technically advanced ships don't use anchors. You sure that's GC? I know anchors are used in Belize where they don't worry about coral.

Yes, I'm sure it is Grand Cayman as this is the source of the image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carnival_Freedom_Grand_Cayman.jpg

Many would consider Royal Caribbean to have technically advanced ships, yet on their website, they use this phrase verbatim.

"At some ports, the ship will anchor off shore, and guests are taken to shore by small boats called tenders. Even if the ship is scheduled to dock at a pier, it can change to tendering."

Closer to sea level and center of the ship you will feel the list rolling up and down. Side to side is going to be the same anywhere.

Take a long stick and grab it in the center and pivot it up and down. How much does the center of the stick move in comparison to the ends?

Now imagine a point up higher it's going to move a little more than the center bottom.

I only felt sick in the ends of the ship in the entertainment places. You could really feel it there.

If your Mom takes a lot of meds like I do, I highly recommend Seabands .They are accupressure bracelets and work great! She just has to make sure she places them correctly per the instructions. I wear them the 1st night and remove them in the am. If I start to feel anything with the motion, I just put them back on and the relief is immediate! You can get them in any pharmacy like CVS or Walgreens. And as other people have said the lower and more mid the cabin, the less the motion.

unless you are freaked out by water and waves crashing up over your cabin window!

That doesn't even cross my mind. I feel less motion on the lower decks and that means my stomach doesn't feel as bad, which means I have a better cruise!

  • 2 weeks later...
I'll let you know after next week. I'm in the front of deck 1. I picked it because there were no rooms across from me and no room on one side of me. I guess I'll find out if the anchor is worse than a bunch of neighbors.

Just to update this..I just got off 5 days in R1 on Elation. Only twice was it so bad that I noticed a lot of movement....and both times Lido aft was as bad or worse than Riviera fwd. And it was a nice quiet room. It was weird tripping over kids on my way out of a nightclub at 1am. I'm glad I didn't have that problem coming out of my room. I had 1 neighbor I saw once. There is noise for about 30mins prior to the arrival time on port days. I would compare it to your neighbor mowing his lawn on the side of your house. But I was always up eating breakfast or drinking coffee at that time.

As much as I hate to bring this up again, it is apparent that the Carnival Magic's captain, guided by the Pilot, had crushed coral using the ship's anchor in Grand Cayman.

Wow...I didn't know that could happen. I'll remind her..she's on several medications as it is, so she'll probably have to check for cross-reactions anyway I'm guessing.

My wife and a friend have both used the wrist bands to avoid sea sickness with great success.

If you are on a cruise ship, you will feel movement no matter where your cabin is. Even if you get a cabin mid ship on the Riviera deck, you will be eating on either decks 3 or 4, visiting the casino on deck 5, the Lido deck buffet etc. You won't always be in your cabin.

"How much do you feel the rocking of the ship?"

A lot. The front of the ship is the place to avoid if you are sensitive to it. I will never understand why the theaters are in the front on most ships. Those poor dancers!!

The biggest myth (or lie) that I ever heard, prior to my first cruise, was, "You won't feel a thing. The ships are huge and have stabilizers". Bull pucky.

For us it has varied quite a bit based on the cruise we were on. Never have had really rough seas, so never a lot of movement, but have definitely felt some. On one cruise we actually thought the ship had stopped a few times because the water was so smooth. Check out for a YT video of the ferry from Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Gundy. I have sailed on that ship when it was like that. Not fun.

IMO Bonine is the best over the counter motion sickness meds out there. Does not cause drowsiness. I start taking it 24 hours before boarding and then daily. It worked great for me. My friend however has to use the much stronger RX patches. The patch can have side affects though. Also what ever she uses have her take it for a few days after getting off the ship. Her world might still be rocking. Mine always does if I don't. Also with her having a port hole and being that low if there are high seas she very well might get a free show. The waves can and do hit up that high and the water is so blue hitting the window. It is fun to watch.

I agree about the Bonine!! I take it everyday while we cruise and have had no issues with it at all! I also continue to take it for a day or two after we are back....it helps with sea legs

I know that I am weird, but I like the rocking and pitching a bit. Our group has been on two ships that were outrunning or detouring around hurricanes and boy were we rocking!! Very hard to walk, lots of sick people on the ship, and even some of the crew were sick.

Last cruise (June 29, 2014) on the DREAM, never, ever felt the ship move. It was a bit disappointing for sure! Ha........my only complaint from my last cruise was that I didn't feel the ship move...even coming our of port!

We travel in a large group and DH and I and our BFF book an OS or GS (on fantasy class) so we always choose mid ship. We booked the DREAM late, 5 weeks out and the only OS left were at the front of the ship. It was surprising that we didn't feel anything. The kids' rooms were on Lido and they said they didn't feel anything either. Smooth seas for sure!!

On all our cruises, we've tried to get on deck 6 or 7 because we know that's more or less midship and you won't feel the rocking of the boat too badly.

HOWEVER....my mother is going on her first ever cruise in January and she's booked into a porthole room on deck 2. So how bad is the rocking down there?

I've already warned her to make sure she takes seasick meds or one of those patch things with her, just in case.

I just completed sailing on the Fascination last week. The sea was like glass for the whole time except for the last night when we got caught up in the outer bands of Hurricane Cristobal as we were coming back to Jacksonville. My cabin was on Deck 1 (Riviera) and was FWD. Contrary to what I always thought it was not unpleasant at all, in fact, benefitted me in going to sleep faster. But, we did a bit of "thumping". The next morning, quite a few people were complaining of being very uncomfortable. I have been on other ships that "rocked and rolled" much more than this one did. I believe that the people who got on the ship after I got off had it worse the next day.

We were on her in January of this year and noticed that same neighbor with the lawn mower lol. This was my second time on Elation and i never noticed it during the first cruise. I later discovered here that this is possibly the engine thrusters. I was pretty far forward upper deck, my daughter was aft upper and they did not experience this at all. Me and my daughter are going in 2 weeks and we are aft upper deck U166. Will see if that noise occurs again, but it's all part of the experience for me! It means I am cruising!
