Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Whilst on the subject of whether you can smell smoke, I think some people have questioned whether you can really smell smoke on the balcony when the ship is moving.

I have some noise cancelling headphones which I use when flying, so I usually have them when I'm cruising. I quite like having the notice cancelling turned on when I'm on the balcony, as I can then just hear the water and it sounds like it's just lapping at the side of the boat.

Anyway, I've only ever noticed having a smoker on the next balcony once. They used to come out and have a cigarette every night, I assume when they got back to their room. As I had the notice cancelling on, I often didn't hear them when they came out, and would know they were there by the smell of the smoke.

It didn't bother me at all, but I could certainly smell it.

It takes less than 5 seconds for the steam to disappear. No chance of getting caught. People can't see me unless they get up from their desks or out of their offices.

If you use them in the cabin, nobody will ever know

Actually, you just said there is a 5 second window for you to get caught in the act. Not to mention if your boss just happens to see you pull it out of your pocket and put it up to your mouth. So much for "no chance". Then again, "no chance" shouldn't matter. It's the rule and you agreed to abide by it by working there.

Only kids and those without integrity try to break the rules because they think they won't get caught.

My aunt was a chain smoker. I had never met someone with such a strong smell of smoke as her. One time when my mom was in the hospital I went to visit her. Walking down the hall towards her room I said to my husband that it smells like aunt j is here. Since we rarely see her, I thought it couldn't be her. When we got to my moms room it continued to smell like her. When I asked my mom if she had been there, she said yes she left about 10 minutes ago.

Edited. Let me say I could care less who smokes, just thought this was strange and kind of funny.

In May, I got a balcony (also Breakaway)cheaper than any ocean view as well.

The stench by 6,7,8 was appalling. I hope they eventually ban smoking in the casinos too.

Or ban the casinos. Some people are never happy.

Guess you have NEVER driven by an 18 wheeler before. And it's funny, you didn't say when you "smell" smoke you hit recycle, only when you "see" it. ;)

There may be snow on the roof, but my reflexes are still good enough to hit that button before the smell gets sucked in the car -- most times. When I tarry, I smell it.

18 wheelers are rarely a problem -- they keep their rigs in good condition because unburned fuel is money wasting. Repainted trucks and school buses - ok, you got me there: another signal to hit the recycle button.

Well said. Unfortunately these new restrictions are nothing more than the results of the sqeeky wheel syndrome. Although you can see from my previous posts that I use an e-cig and never liked being in an enclosed area where smoke was present even when I smoked, I am getting enjoyment out of those squeeky wheels now complaining because the results of their previous complaining will now cause excess smoke in the casinos and on some designated areas and also downwind of those areas. Putting the smokers aside, I feel real bad for the e-cig users and those non-smokers who for whatever reason have never had any issues on their balconies. Contrary to what is posted here, those 2 categories make up the "silent" majority.

I fall within that description and I am far from silent.

I wonder how much worse the smoke in the casino will be. Some are predicting that people will sit in front of a slot machine playing 1 penny at a time just so they can "legally" smoke. There are very few machines anymore that the minimum bet is 1 cent. Most are at least from 25-50 cents so it could get expensive if that's their only reason for being there.

I can understand people coming into the casino early in the morning or late at night just to smoke but, if people are out and about the ship, is it always more convenient to go to the casino than to a smoking area on deck. I guess I'll find out in November if the casino is the smoke filled horror that some are predicting.

My only observation would be that we expected there to be big problems when pubs and bars banned smoking, with people hanging around outside the doors etc.

In my experience, there has been some of that, but nothing like I was expecting.

We can only see what will happen, but I'm not convinced the change will be as big as you would first imagine.

Right. I'm not convinced that so many more people are going to flock to the casino unless the weather is especially bad on deck.

Just a note about the casino...They are closed Port days for gambling, but you can still walk in, look around and enjoy those cigarettes......who's to stop you? no one..........Will just make it smokier for when the officially open after sailing....JMHO

since you have to be playing in order to smoke, I wonder if they will stop you. they typically have someone around all the time and they might not allow it

Why is this policy change such a big deal? If you smoke, why wouldn't you just smoke on your balcony discreetly anyway? Being sure to do it when neighbors aren't using their balconies or when there is no one to even observe you do it? I have been on a bunch of cruises and rarely am I on my balcony at the same time as my neighbors.

I am a non- smoker , have mild asthma where smoke bothers me a bit. But even i wouldn't really care if my neighbor smoked on their balcony. I'd go inside for a few minutes or if it were really bad, maybe then I'd ask if they minded putting it out for a bit.

Why is this such a big deal?

Most people are off the ship on port days or enjoying the less crowded pool area so will there be that many people going to the casino to smoke?

Again, this is only my experience with Carnival since I did not smoke in the Epic's casino, but on Carnival ships, if the casino is not open for business, you can only smoke around the casino bar, not in the casino itself.

On port days you will see the greatest number of smokers in the evening. On sea days, it will probably depend on the weather and the condition of the facilities for smokers outside.

I wonder if they are going to increase the size of the smoking area outside? On the Epic, there was seating for about 30 smokers or so. Take into account the Epic has 1,426 balconies, that could be a lot more smokers attempting to use the outside facilities. If there is no room for them, you will find them moving to the casino. Or would they rather have a herd of cattle start blocking the narrow walkway on the port side of the ship?

I've only been on 2 Carnival ships, and they were the 2 smallest, but the smoke around the casino bar was worse than it was in the casino, especially at night. I don't know what it was like when the casino was closed because I was off the ship.

Do people still protest smoking bans ay bars and restaurants? Or do you just go smoke in a designated area?

Do people protest going to their friends homes if they can't smoke in the living room? Or do you just wait until you are outside?

Do people protest airlines because they can't smoke on a plane anymore? Or do they just deal with it until for their relatively short flight duration?

The big fuss being made will go away. People will accept it and deal with it, and perhaps everyone will be better off for it.

Totally correct.

I predict within a few years ships casinos will be non smoking as well

That is not to say the ship will entirely non smoking as the vast majority of the crew do smoke so an outdoor area or 2 will always be available to smoke

I still say build some sort of aft outdoor area with a restaurant bar entertainment area maybe even a small pool and hot tub and wall it off in 3 sides with glass and have the open area face the sea and in bad weather have an awning or something like the great outdoors

Simply said just take some space aft and really segregate it from the non smokers and any balcony cabins and just be done with it. Smoke there 24/7 who cares just keep that deadly aroma away from everyone else

Not trying to start a fight here at all but at some point all cruise lines will be 100% smoke free. Yeah it has been tried before, but the operative word there is 'before'. I'm not saying it will be soon or at any specific time frame, just at some point it is going to happen. Never say never.

I would love to respond. But, it seems as though my opinion is not allowed on this topic as all of my post about it get deleted.

Carry on with the crusade.

I'm not so sure they will ever be 100% smoke-free, but who knows. Maybe you're right. It certainly seems to be going that way. Even beaches in certain towns are now smoke-free.

I would love to see 100% smoke free but too many of the crew smoke.

Don't know how to solve that issue.

I think only hiring non smoking crew might be a stretch.

I believe you're probably right but I think it will take more than a few years. The ship's casino will be the last public area on a ship to go smokeless IMO. Take a look at Las Vegas or AC as examples. The casinos of hotels are pretty much the last bastion for smokers (with a few bars thrown in). Smoking, drinking and gambling have high correlations with each other. It's certainly not a direct causal relationship but there is clearly a similarity in habit-forming behaviors. Casinos are extremely reluctant to go completely smoke-free because they are almost certain that it would lead directly to decreased revenue.

Even the massive jones beach in New York is smoke free

Of course there is an occasional smoker but they always know the can't smoke and are on the lookout.

The woman behind me was smoking the other day and the minute I turned around she snuffed it in the sand

She was definitely a native new yawker and a tough one as well but she knew the rules and knew she could get fined big time.

Yep they actually do patrol this kind if thing.

They patrol beach drinking out there as well and the beach I was on was a radio free zone

Just sayin that apparantly the vocal majority has won if at the greatest beach in New York State just miles away from rough and tough New York neighborhoods can enforce a no smoking no drinking no loud music ordinance that it can be done

Please no " footloose" references because the reason for radio free and alcohol free beaches us because beach goers can't seem to control the volume of the music or the amount if alcohol consumed that plus the general

Use of iPods! Lol

Btw I love music but don't mind forgoing it at times
