Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Okay, I get it. So everyone is okay with businesses and employers telling others that they can't smoke, what they can eat, drink, weigh, how active they can be. And I get it that these can be health problems. But is it really anyone else's business? And everyone is okay with it happening to someone else. But they go overboard when it happens to them. So go ahead and think that it's okay to do this, it will only be a matter of time until it happens to you. The US is no longer the land of personal freedoms. It's the nanny state where government, employers, and businesses try to control the things they should stay out of, and stay out of the common sense things they should control.

I think we need that picture that showed up earlier in the thread to be posted again.

wow!

Wow indeed as a response to declansdad. So an initiative, eminating from whatever motivation, that enhances the health and welfare of the majority, is some kind of '1984' plot? Keep taking the paranoia pills pilgrim...

Non-smoker. I think this is a very bad idea. For those that think it's a good idea, just remember that your legal freedoms will be next on the list of things to be banned. Once the door is open, it's hard to shut. Oh, and as an example, your employers are already well on the way to trying to control what you eat, how much you weigh, and how active you need to be. What will be next?

Interestingly enough, some nutjob in US congress wants to pass a bill to allow employers to polygraph prospective employees during the interview process. Now there's an idea that is going down the wrong road.

We're canceling a balcony because of it. Why pay more for a balcony, when you get the same result in an oceanview for about $200.00 less? Another balcony for the non-smokers. They're definitely doing a happy dance. I think they should ban food and alcohol on balconies too. :O Bet that would make a large riot.

You certainly don't get the same result with an ocean view, unless you have found a way to open that window.

So .. no smoke detector issues? Hmm?? Does this mean the stoners can smoke their hash oil with out any issues with the detectors?

Why yes it does...However they will have issues with the drug dog detectors :)

My comment was directed at that poster's level of paranoia and conspiracy theory-belief.

Have you ever had an aft balcony? If you did you'd know that in a great many instances black soot deposits itself on the deck and chairs from the stack.
Have cruised in aft penthouse on the Jewell (deck 10) and Pearl (deck 9) and there was no soot on the balcony or loungers or chairs.

Look, I don't smoke but my God I'm tired of hearing people complain that their neighbor had a smoke or a cigar and it ruined their cruise. The ship is sailing along at 20-24 knots. The smoke disappears so fast you can barely recognize it when you're out there. So much exaggeration and drama.

Completely wrong

Actually you're wrong. I've had balconies on the side and aft. There's far more stink and soot coming from the stacks depositing itself on the aft decks then a thousand smokers could do. We had to have our deck and furniture cleaned twice a day and high pressure washed once in the middle of the cruise. And sorry, even the side balconies smokers are nothing more than an oddity. If they have a smoke out there it disappears into the air. Its only the whiners and drama queens who like to pretend otherwise. Getting rid of smoking on the balconies was and is probably a good idea, just not for the reason the drama queens like to claim. Its done because some insufferable oaf has in the past discarded a cigarette off the balcony and caused a fire. THAT is a valid reason to get rid of balcony smoking and I support it. The other stuff is nothing more than fluff and drama.

I agree. Im used to it, but I am also a considerate smoker. I don't smoke near people, especially when they are not smoking. I would never light up in the casino next to a non smoker, or at a bar next to someone not smoking. I liked my balcony, by myself, especially early morning or before bed.

With that said, I simply can not cruise any more :(. Im not rebelling, or taking a stance with the new policy. My reason is I also have a child. I don't smoke near her and I like to go on the balcony, while she is in the room to have a cigarette. I make sure my neighbors are not out there too. I wont leave her in the room alone or go to a bar or casino with her. I wont take her anywhere where there is a group of smokers and have her sit there waiting for me to have a cigarette. The balconies were my haven and now that is gone. :( Sad day for me.

Having 2 reservations on NCL after November 1st and 1 with Carnival just prior to the smoking policy change, I have been reading all these boards concerning the changes. I will not cancel my cruises due to this change. I have traveled to Disneyworld and stayed at many a hotel where smoking was prohibited except in designated areas. Strict smoking rules do not and never will prevent me from spending time with my children and grandchildren. Only problem is we do have to take "time outs" to stop in designated areas for a smoke. Sad, yes, but that is when the kids go on rides I cannot or at a hotel when they are showering. All have adjusted to this.

As stated by some, I have always been a considerate smoker, putting out my cigarette when someone sits down next to me in the casino and going back into my room if my balcony neighbor comes out and starts coughing and complaining. (At least now I can go out and listen to their "strange" music blasting and enjoy their cell phone conversations with family and friends. I felt sooo bad on my last trip that my neighbor's mother-in-law was such a b**** and their darling son had such a high pitched, loud voice).

I too have had a non-smoker sit next to me and start coughing and waving their hands due to me smoking a cigarette in a designated smoking area. I usually put it out, but, I have to say that now that there will be more smoking restrictions, I will not put out my cigarette until I am finished. I am not trying to be sinister and I understand that you paid for a cruise, just as I did, to enjoy every aspect of the ship. I would hope that just as you expect me to respect your rights as a non-smoker, you respect my right to smoke in designated areas. Please just go to a non-smoking area until I am finished.

As for the casino, I always book through CAS so I do gamble a lot. Please don't sit next to me in the designated smoking area because I will not put out my cigarette there either until I finish it. I probably won't light up another one until you leave unless you are there for over an hour.

As stated by some, what I just wrote will probably happen often to others. Most smokers try to be considerate just as most non-smokers just "live and let live" and adjust accordingly.

Will be seeing my "smoker" friends in the cigar bars and designated smoking areas, where most of the time that is where I smoke anyway. Only difference will be my morning coffee in my hand with my sunglasses on to hide the morning's "dark circles" under my eyes!

You are the first poster whom I felt actually had a legitimate reason for having a problem with this new policy. While I understand your reasons, isn't there another option? Is it possible you might actually quit smoking? Not to sound judgemental or tell you how to live your life, but if you quit not only would you and your daughter be able to continue to enjoy the cruise vacations you've come to love, you'll also be healthier. You'll smell better, your senses will come back to live, etc. It seems like a win-win to me.

I've no idea about hash oil and the use of it, One has to assume drugs on board are illegal anyway?

I know ours are shisha pens - zero nicotine - and they dont set off smoke detectors. I cant really speak for USA products as I do not know them well but would imagine much the same. Smoke is smoke - steam is steam. When one cooks in a kitchen does steam set off a detector - so I honestly cannot see any form of ecig setting off a detector.

Certainly has never been an issue for us.

AS a child of the 60's the decadence of my youth brought me into contact with the evils of THC. In my now advanced years I am beyond such folly, but I am an advocate of legalization and recreational use. THC is far less toxic to your body, brain, than alcohol at any doseage, but I frown upon anyone's lack of moderation when partaking of "mood" altering chemicals.

I had never heard about it before until I Googled Colorado's experiences with legalization. As to steam and smoke detectors, I think that may depend on the device and it's location, but that is a guess. The steam from a hot shower on a cruise does not set it off, so ...

My guess is that the vile of oil is well sealed a could be repacked into a vacuum sealed bag. Besides, the ship side boarding security is not on a drug search.

The smoking ban I get. The e-cig thing I'm not so sure.

Definitely the wrong road. Only thing is try to argue that point and and everyone will initially say it is a good idea and you are crazy.... Then.... A year or 2 later when the damage has been done everyone will start agreeing with you but will never remember you said it first! Lol

For my money, I really don't care who lights up on a ship but I am very selfish about my fresh air.... That is the only reason I like these new regs...purely selfish in my part.

Please don't got all nuts over that comment....I am just stating that I am selfish regarding my fresh air on a ship and near the casino. That's all

You do know that your arguing with a person that claims to never sail in a balcony stateroom.. Has no dog in the fight and is nothing more than a crusader against the ill's of humanity..

Just thought I would let you know ... ;)

Good luck..

Nope you are wrong. No crusader here. Just a selfish non smoking cruiser as per my previous post.

Actually, other than the fire hazard that onboard smoking may cause, I want Ncl to allow balcony smoking just so the smokers stay segregated and don't rely on the casino or lido to smoke

Don't gamble either but my selfishness allows me to realize that on the ba I will have to walk in or near the casino.

No crusader here. Just someone who sees reality and can analyze it and not afraid to admit it.

Btw there is no way I believe the cruiselines are doing this on their own accord. I guess I am a conspiracist because the reality is very few companies do anything for their customers or employees without being forced into doing it

Ever hear of unions? Lemon laws? Family leave?

None of it the company's idea

I guess that makes me an over the top sky is falling type because I know why a company does what it does . Lol. Or maybe just well versed in business and politics.

Sorry, but you are just wrong. Dead wrong. It's not an exaggeration or dramatization. It's a fact and many have stipulated to it. People are not always standing at their balcony rail and blowing smoke directly out. They are often sitting on their chair, farther back in the balcony where there is very little breeze, and the smoke blows over or under the balcony dividers. So don't tell me I don't smell cigarette smoke on my balcony because I absolutely have. YMMV.

Apparently you have never heard of corporate decisions being driven by competition and market research. You might send the suggestion that they can save lots of money by eliminating their market research departments and just make all new decision based upon regulatory changes.
