LoriSan Posted July 25, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 25, 2014 I have never purchased insurance (I know, I've gotten lucky). I have never purchased it because I never know what all the different types of coverages was. Is there a "travel insurance for dummies" type of website to explain it in easy terms? Shmoo here Posted July 25, 2014 #3 Share Posted July 25, 2014 I have never purchased insurance (I know, I've gotten lucky). I have never purchased it because I never know what all the different types of coverages was. Is there a "travel insurance for dummies" type of website to explain it in easy terms? There are travel insurance comparison sites. Like http://www.insuremytrip.com/ or https://www.squaremouth.com/ and http://tripinsurancestore.com/. On these you put in the parameters of what you want covered (trip cancellation/delay/interruption; baggage damage/loss/delay; medical costs/medical evacuation) and they will show you policies from several different companies that would fit the bill. They show them side by side for easy comparison. I've found that calling them directly (I've used insure my trip and squaremouth for this) and speaking to the representative on the phone helps a lot with my questions before I make a purchase. calliopecruiser Posted July 25, 2014 #4 Share Posted July 25, 2014 Any site that sells insurance should have an explanation of the different types, then you can decide which types of coverage you want. Here's a nice summary from the Travel Insurance Association: http://www.ustia.org/faqs.html Personally, I only buy health insurance coverage, accepting that I'll cover the cost of trip cancellation (should it happen) myself. cherylandtk Posted July 25, 2014 #6 Share Posted July 25, 2014 I think tripinsurancestore has some very good and clear explanation pages. http://tripinsurancestore.com/travel-insurance-frequently-asked-questions/
NMLady Posted July 25, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 25, 2014 (edited) I would look at some of the policies at insuremytrip.com and then call them with questions. They are brokers so represent a variety of different companies. Their rep will be very patient with your questions. NMLady Posted July 25, 2014 #8 Share Posted July 25, 2014 You could buy it from Carnival.. I never recommend buying from a cruise line. I've never found the amount of their medical evacuation coverage to be sufficient. Also, paying it at final payment means it doesn't cover per-existing conditions for cruisers or non cruising immediate family.
Rare Keith1010 Posted July 26, 2014 #9 Share Posted July 26, 2014 Start with something like insuremytrip.com See if that answers your questions. Keith
dorisis Posted July 26, 2014 #10 Share Posted July 26, 2014 Be sure to read the small print and ask questions of the agent.
threetimesalady Posted July 26, 2014 #11 Share Posted July 26, 2014 I agree with all the recommendations for using insuremytrip, especially if you want to pick and choose various types of coverages. However, I have found that for a simple, cover-everything policy at a reasonable cost the World Nomad insurance can't be beat. Here's a link http://www.worldnomads.com. It comes highly recommended from past experience by one of my favorite travel writers, Nomadic Matt. Google him for lots of great travel information. I love his blog.
