Marriott Courtyard Isla Verde is directly on the nicest beach in San Juan. It hasbeach chairs and umbrellas, 3 pools, hot tub, hammocks, restaurant, casino, snack and ice cream bar all on site and great service, all completely renovated. Can walk to other things close by. 5 min from airport and approx 15 min to ship. We stay there every time we go to sj. And Love it! Taxi to ship is 21$ plus 1$ per bag (not carryons). All taxi rates are fixed rates in sj. If you want to arrange a tour somewhere there is a concierge to help and front desk staff will help too.

If you want to immerse in the culture for the night and right in old town (the walled city), and want to splurge - look at el convento. It used to be a convent (across from the cathedral) and rooms are very nicely renovated (although small). It has an inner courtyard.

Another boutique hotel we have stayed is Cervantes. Suite sized rooms (request one facing a quieter street or you will hear the party well into the night).

Both will keep you in high style but give you a taste of the culture of San Juan. The walled city has the two forts, the Sheraton casino, tons of shops, is like a quaint European city. Lots of amazing restaurant selections (from wendys to high end) and lovely views.

If you want a night in the city rather than the beach - I recommend either of these hotels.

If you plan on staying in Old San Juan I strongly recommend El Convento. We have stayed there twice. IT is convenient to many tapas bars and restaurants as well as El Moro and other tourist attractions. It is a wonderful place to stay.
