Clarea Posted August 18, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 18, 2014 Does a reservation have to be paid in full in order to receive an upgrade or the price difference in a price drop? You can only get a price drop before final payment date.
Priusprof Posted August 18, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 18, 2014 Does a reservation have to be paid in full in order to receive an upgrade or the price difference in a price drop? Unless you are Diamond Plus a C&A upgrade is unlikely. Even then it's very rare. The Revenue department does upgrades on a mysterious basis that no one understands. C&A are generally in the week before sailing while a Revenue upgrade happens earlier.
molly361 Posted August 18, 2014 #4 Share Posted August 18, 2014 No it does not have to be paid in full for either but most upgrades occur very close to sailing so the reservation would have already been paid in full
leaveitallbehind Posted August 18, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 18, 2014 (edited) There are two types of upgrades - Crown & Anchor non-revenue which are provided at n/c to higher tier C & A members first and are usually done close to the sailing date, and revenue upgrades which are the result of price changes that are favorable to upgrading to a higher category for some amount of payment by the passenger. The C & A type are very rare, but the revenue type are more common. (Some revenue upgrades may be restricted to new bookings only, however). A paid in full reservation is not a requirement for either. With revenue upgrades they typically (but not always) occur after final payment where, as a result of a price decrease, the only upgrade option available to you is to pay the difference between what you paid for your current category and the one to which you are upgrading. You can also ask at check in if there are available upgrades and will pay the difference in rate then if there are. There is no credit issued to you for price decreases within your category after final payment, only the option to pay for an upgrade if one is available. If a price decrease occurs within your category prior to final payment you can receive that lower price of move to a different category for the prevailing rate. Folk Singer Posted August 18, 2014 #6 Share Posted August 18, 2014 (edited) Does a reservation have to be paid in full in order to receive an upgrade or the price difference in a price drop? You will find that price drops are only up to when final payment is made. And as others have stated upgrades will occur only to a few D+ and above and just before sailings. Actually, price drops are granted until final payment date, so if someone has paid off their cruise early, and an eligible price drop occurs before final payment date, Royal will issue a credit. That is true only for price drops that you can apply to your booking. Price drops are very common after final payment, however, but the only option at that point is to pay for an upgraded category if one is available. Lowered prices after final payment is frequently used to sell remaining staterooms. Edited August 18, 2014 by leaveitallbehind

Agreed, the Price does drop after final payment esp. if there are unsold rooms and you are right, then you could always pay for an upgrade if they are advertised.
