cruzinlisa Posted September 5, 2014 #26 Share Posted September 5, 2014 Bonine, definitely. The cruise I took last year, I had looked at the bonine and was looking for a generic. I picked one up and it turned out to be Dramamine. We had an inside room and every day I felt like I had been run over by a truck and the lack of light made me more sleepy. I finally realized that perhaps the Dramamine was making me so tired. I got a few bonine from someone that we had shared an excursion with and it made a world of difference. This past cruise I had the Bonine, but barely used it. I am interested in trying the sea bands some day. For those that have used them, do you like them and where do you get them. Do they work well. I really just get a little queasy and it could possibly be more in my head than anything. Plus I have been dieting so this cruise I plan to eat a little lighter and not drink much, so I am wondering if I would be a good candidate for them. sweetsixteencruisers Posted September 5, 2014 #27 Share Posted September 5, 2014 I start taking the Bonine and ginger the day before we sail. And take everyday on the cruise. I don't wait to feel sick. Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
LadyL Posted September 5, 2014 #28 Share Posted September 5, 2014 I've never been nauseated, only lightheaded on the last few sailings when the ship would rock a lot. I've taken bonine, which seemed to help.
Vitamin_Sea Posted September 5, 2014 #29 Share Posted September 5, 2014 either one works. You can even get the generic brand. It is the same ingredients as the brand name stuff.
bresdogsr Posted September 5, 2014 #30 Share Posted September 5, 2014 As a Pharmacist, I can say Dramamine is more effective, but will zonk you out. Meclizine or Bonine is effective and less drowsy, but can still make you sleepy. Ginger root is also very good with minimal side effects. Ask your pharmacist to order a bottle of 100 Meclizine, it is much less expensive. If you think you are going to be sick, don't wait take a dose. On our Hawaiian cruise, we took the Meclizine daily. Bookbug53 Posted September 5, 2014 #31 Share Posted September 5, 2014 Dramamine knocks me out! Bonine keeps me from getting nauseous and I can enjoy myself. I literally cannot watch a merry-go-round without feeling ill. :( Bonine keeps me sailing! :p
riffatsea Posted September 5, 2014 #32 Share Posted September 5, 2014 Really? A pharmacist doesn't know that Dramamine II is the same as Bonine which has the same Meclazine in it??
Rare sandinmyshoes Posted September 5, 2014 #33 Share Posted September 5, 2014 My family takes Bonine and it works great for all of us. Here's a question for you though … is it pronounced BO-Neen or Bo-9 My family is split down the middle on this.
justusfour2014 Posted September 5, 2014 #34 Share Posted September 5, 2014 I took Bonine the day before our cruise and each morning of our cruise. The seas were very rough, port cancelled, and I did fine. My son took Dramamine oncd and hated it and ended up with the seabands. I also like Gin-Gins by the Ginger People. You can get them at any Rainbow Blossom, or health food store. If I ever have an upset tummy, one of these settles it right away. They also come in different flavors, which I have not tried. The original is spicy....fyi. Sent from my SGH-T989 using Forums mobile app
Cruisin 4 Ever Posted September 5, 2014 #35 Share Posted September 5, 2014 I always bring Transdermal V ( scopalomine transdermal) patches. You put them on behind the ear and it lasts for three days. I always see tons of people on the ships with patches behind their ears.

Bookbug53 Posted September 6, 2014 #37 Share Posted September 6, 2014 According to online sources, dictionaries, and audio pronunciations it is Bo-neen just like Dramameen.
sharkaymon Posted September 6, 2014 Author #38 Share Posted September 6, 2014 Where do I get Ginger pills? Are they tablets or caps? Are they equal in effectiveness to ground ginger mixed in water? I have never been seasick, but there's a first time for everything. We had a small Cessna 172 and I flew on many trips before suddenly developing air sickness. I am bringing the wrist bands. I'm wondering if the sea is generally rougher during hurricane season?
cruising_diva Posted September 6, 2014 #39 Share Posted September 6, 2014 All three of my cruises have been between September and November and we've never nhad anything but PERFECT weather. I mean its a gamble and a chance you take, but so far it has worked out well for us.
CoasterJoe Posted September 6, 2014 #40 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I use Ginger pills in combination with Bonine / Meclizine. I take 2 ginger pills in the morning and two at night along with 1 dose of Bonine / Meclizine and that works great for me.
lovestocruise19 Posted September 6, 2014 #41 Share Posted September 6, 2014 We've always taken dramamine the day before, each day during and a couple days after the cruise. My DH has complained of being sleepy sometimes, but I've never really noticed. However, after reading this thread I can't believe I've never thought of taking them before bed instead of in the morning. Genius!
swedish weave Posted September 6, 2014 #42 Share Posted September 6, 2014 Generic meclizene is also available in 12 1/2 mg or 25 mg. I find the Rugby brand in bottles of 100 tablets in most pharmacies and stores like WalMart. Cheap and same chemical as Bonine.

hancock Posted September 6, 2014 #44 Share Posted September 6, 2014 Really? A pharmacist doesn't know that Dramamine II is the same as Bonine which has the same Meclazine in it?? I believe you misread the pharmicist's comments. He was talking about the original Dramamine compared to Bonine, HCL Meclizine (Dramamine II).
