MaiTaiMary Posted October 2, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 2, 2014 Any suggestions where to look for a good sun hat? Not quite sure what I'm looking for. Something "straw-ish" and fairly wide brimmed? :) I've been checking Amazon, but nothing has really been jumping out at me. I'm looking for more of a "sitting around the pool" kinda hat. Thanks!! :D
Ehpride Posted October 2, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 2, 2014 Do you want something pack able? My local Target has a bunch of straw floppy hats on clearance but you can't fold them up for packing. I found a foldable one a few years ago at a local store. I love it, but it's orange so I can't wear it with everything. Luckily, I wear a lot of orange... MaiTaiMary Posted October 2, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted October 2, 2014 I'm in San Diego (where it's 95 degrees today) and our Target has all winter stuff out. :( Gloves, stocking hats, etc.
Ehpride Posted October 3, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 3, 2014 Wow. I'm in Iowa (cool and rainy :( ) and I've only seen one display of gloves so far. Luckily, I've probably got a few pairs stashed in coat pockets. I did see some hats online though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ehpride Posted October 3, 2014 #5 Share Posted October 3, 2014 I kind of like this one. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00M7NR1DC/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?qid=1412295174&sr=8-8&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
NemoCrownie Posted October 3, 2014 #6 Share Posted October 3, 2014 I have a packable Sun 'n Sand Hat. Big front brim, the ribbon band is adjustable with velcro and it has a removable, washable built in padded sweat band. The picture on Amazon aren't flattering but I actually bought it in a clothing shop. Great vacation hat because you can pack it. I also bought 2 of their visor style hats but I don't think they are as cute but they do have fairly wide brims. I also have a cloth sunscreen fabric hat from Eddie Bauer that packs wonderfully. A hat that you can adjust to fit is important otherwise they seem to want to blow off constantly or you end up walking around with your hand on your hat. Hoyaheel Posted October 3, 2014 #7 Share Posted October 3, 2014 I have a few sun hats that are packable. I have a woven paper hat I found years ago at Ross or TJ Maxx that I bring for beach trips (rare). I have an Ex Officio sun hat (with chin strap) that I bring anyplace there will be wind (eg I wore it on my big sailing trip last summer) and my husband just got a cooling Columbia hat. I can't find it online - I stole it a couple weeks ago when we went to Shanghai and I like the technology! Also, in dark grey, it's a nicer hat for me in a city than the straw or my bright blue ex officio option. This - same technology, different style - is on sale on the Columbia website - cute! COmes in natural, blue/white stripe, and purple http://www.columbia.com/womens-sun-ridge-ii-hat-CL9968.html?dwvar_CL9968_variationColor=120#prefn1=productClass&prefv1=Accessories&start=1 (we got ours at the nearby outlet store) Sierra Trading Post is where I got my ex officio hat and they have some cute options: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/s~sun-hat/clothing~d~5/womens-clothing~d~6/ (their facebook page quite often has 25-40% off coupons)
awhfy Posted October 3, 2014 #8 Share Posted October 3, 2014 (edited) Columbia has several cloth (spf30) hats on line & in outlet stores. Sun&Sand are spf50 & my favorite straw. I bought one in San Diego & 2 others on line at their web site. Good luck Sent from my iPhone using Forums Edited October 3, 2014 by awhfy
DareTooDream Posted October 3, 2014 #9 Share Posted October 3, 2014 I really like this one http://www.sundayafternoons.com/caribbean-hat.html It's packable and has a chin strap for when the wind picks up (I just put it up in the hat if I don't want it at the moment) . I have this one as well http://www.sundayafternoons.com/sport-hat.html. It has a place to put a ponytail through :) & a chin strap. I ordered online, but I've seen them in a few stores around here. SadieN Posted October 3, 2014 #10 Share Posted October 3, 2014 (edited) Found my packable straw hat in the Target Garden Area. Got a huge brimmed reversible cloth hat at DSW. Also check out Tuesday Morning. Tilly is another brand to look for. I've seen a good selection at REI. Edited October 3, 2014 by SadieN
Hoyaheel Posted October 3, 2014 #11 Share Posted October 3, 2014 My husband loves his Tilley hats (he has a summer one and a winter one) but they aren't cheap and his options are not packable. Well, they aren't squishable. He still packs them:D
whataboutport Posted October 3, 2014 #12 Share Posted October 3, 2014 Mine is also Sun N Sand brand and I got it at Tuesday Morning for $9.99! It's an open top type of hat so I can have my hair up and still wear a hat. I can't stand having my hair down when it's hot. Velcro closure so it's adjustable, and packable, actually it's rollable. I loved it so much I went back and bought a back up.
Rare Scrapnana Posted October 3, 2014 #13 Share Posted October 3, 2014 I have one of these seagrass hats. It went around the world with me, got flattened in my suitcase, and still looks great. On very windy days onboard I took an old, thin scarf and put it through the holes to make sure it would not fly away. https://www.crushableseagrasshats.com/shop/
babysteps Posted October 3, 2014 #14 Share Posted October 3, 2014 I just got a new travel sun hat and it was more of a quest than I expected! Coolibar has many sun hats to choose from, even some fashionable packable ones including "smart straw" that is polypropylene but looks like straw. I just got Coolibar's "packable tropicana sun hat" but note there is a bit of internal metal or some such in the brim - can't see it, but it isn't quite crushable imo. Will certainly stand up better to packing than my dying 20yo straw Ralph Lauren hat! It does help hold the brim however you wish, but if you crush the hat you'll probably want to smooth the bumps out of the metal a bit afterwards. Go to retailmenot to find latest coupon codes, there usually is one that works for Coolibar

They are on the pricey side but they wash beautifully and pack flat and shade the neck front and back and the ears and have good string under the chin system (I've lost 2 hats on ships -- fly away!!). I have had my blue hat for at least 3 years and use it for travel and for gardening.

I just spent like an hour sewing on an elastic on my hat so it wouldn't fly away. I have just the scarf that would work, and it'd be so much cuter! sirenitas Posted October 4, 2014 #17 Share Posted October 4, 2014 I got this one for DD http://www.amazon.com/Roxy-Juniors-Breezy-J-Hat/dp/B00H8PCQAM/ref=cts_ap_1_fbt I liked it so much that I went to the Roxy website and got it in tan for myself. It is light packable and it is not huge - I do not like to be overpowered by my hats ;) The prices go up and down but I did not pay more than $15 each. kakalina Posted October 4, 2014 #18 Share Posted October 4, 2014 When in Maui I found this wonderful Scalia hat. It has a wide brim, a drawstring inside to fit it perfectly and is very packable. I love it and want another one in a different color. I wish I knew how to post a picture of it.
marshhawk Posted October 4, 2014 #19 Share Posted October 4, 2014 I actually got my best sun hat (live in the hot south) at the 10 dollar shop on the ship. (Fascination last year) It's foldable and washable.

bbeltmom Posted October 7, 2014 #22 Share Posted October 7, 2014 I have to add my vote for coolibar (http://www.coolibar.com/category/Sun-Hats/Womens/pc/2222/2271.uts). magandab Posted October 28, 2014 #24 Share Posted October 28, 2014 I have two of the seagrass hats (got the recommendation here) and love them. You can squish or roll them up and they really do tighten up and stay on. I think I'll steal the scarf idea, just to make sure. I also have a Coolibar ponytail sunhat that I love too. http://www.coolibar.com/product/Reversible-Pool-Hat/156053.uts
