Well, I am at a loss! I posted a roll-call for Zaandam 11/11/05 and NO ONE has responded! How unusual...! Is anyone going??

Also, Ziggy, if you are reading this, you didn't add us to your list (I know it is getting very long!).

I wanted to meet up with some CC people, but maybe we won't have the oportunity this time....!

I'm sorry no one has yet responded to your roll call. Hopefully, you may find someone posting here and can 'get something started'.

(I'm one that is guilty of never going to the roll calls but I often learn about other CC'ers on my sailing by reading only the HAL CC section.)

I posted a Roll Call for the 10/28/05 sailing of Ryndam a few months back so far no response. I have tried keeping the Roll Call on first few pages by corresponding with Slineberry. We were cc's last year on Masdam cruise over Thanksgiving.

The dates all around the 28th have Roll Calls and responses. So, I guess no CC folks on that date only. Maybe as we get closer to departure someone will turn up. I don't think all the cabins are taken, but all the Suites and I believe balconies are gone.

I posted a Roll Call for 11/12/05 Oosterdam and no one has responded either. I found it a little surprising that there aren't any other CC members on the cruise!

I think that maybe some people just don't want to be identified as CC members. Who knows. *shrug* :p

I posted a roll call for our 10/26/05 Volendam cruise and no one has answered that one either. Maybe the craze has abated. Since I'm travelling with family, there will already be familiar faces on board. I did enjoy meeting CC folks on three other cruises though. S7S, how shall we recognize each other? You're the only other CC regular that I know is going on that cruise. Oh, I know! I'll be the one with the huge smile on my face as I enter the ship!;)

Don't get discouraged! I will be on three back-to-back cruises on the Statendam this winter (Auckland to Osaka), posted three separate Roll Calls several weeks ago, have had a bit of response, but no response of a continuing nature. All 3 sites have had a number of "views", which makes me think that there are some "lurkers" on the cruises, but not registered CC members. But, it may be also too long before the cruises. People who have not been part of an active Roll Call really don't understand what they are missing.

Keep "bumping" your Roll Call. And good luck!

In my experience, the most new activity on these roll calls is the 3 weeks prior to the cruise. I keep a link in my sig in case anyone new to CC doesn't know about roll calls.

Last year when we went on the Black Sea cruise on the Prinsendam I posted a Roll Call and nobody responded even up to the last minute.

It didn't make any difference to our cruise, we had a wonderful time, met some lovely people and enjoyed our time on the Prinsendam.

The year before when we were on the Noordam we had a good Roll Call and met lots of people which was fun as well.

A lot depends on the type of cruise, the age of the passenger and whether they are computer literate. I know a vast majority these days have computers, but amongst my immediate friends I would say that only 25% use a computer or have one in the home.

If CCers really want to meet they HAVE to make definite plans BEFORE they sail. To say 'hope we'll run into you' is saying 'we're not interested in meeting' in so many words. No way you'll just 'recognize' anyone after you board. How- by ESP? ;)

GrannyNurse and I had no specific plans as to how to meet but we met up with eachother on the cruise. Of course, we had the help of the concierge. Concierge knew us from the first week of our b-to-b and when GrannyNurse and her DH boarded the next week, she pointed out Granny's DH to me and we arranged for us all to meet.

If either of us wished to post our e-mail addresses than it is easy to communicate and set up how to meet.

It is harder when neither wishes to post an e-mail address on a public forum.

2ofus.....

I do not agree with Peaches premise. I would like to meet up with you on board VODM. To not make a specific plan here on the board does not mean I (or you) do not have the interest.

It means that neither of us have posted our cabin numbers or e-mails because we don't want everyone to have access to it. There are some folks I would not wish to hear from in my e-mail box. There is no way to privately provide an e-mail address that I know of.

I never set up to meet with anyone on Embarkation Day (as I have posted here a number of times) that is the main reason I avoid Roll Calls. We don't wish to commit to specific plans on the day we board because it is busy, we often have friends on the ship we are meeting up with and sometimes don't know when/where. Most groups wish to meet after life boat drill and I almost never would wish to commit to that time.

I do not believe it is all that unusal that no one answered a roll call. Not every sailing has a CC member on board, but good luck finding someone.

As far as setting up to meet someone, Peachie is not all that off base.

I don't see where you have to give out email addresses or committ to meeting after the muster drill. I would think if someone really wished to meet another, you could set up a time and place.

Odd Ball.....You must have missed where I commented that after Life Boat Drill is never a good time for me and there is no sense making plans that I know it is highly unlikely I can keep.

I don't care to receive a lot of e-mail from folks I don't care to hear from so I don't care to post my address. If I were to have a hotmail account, I would still (possibly) get mail I don't wish to receive.

So..... posters need to be able to find a method for giving contact information in private IMO

I am open to all viable suggestions. Please. I have tried in the past to find a method to meet up but in advance of boarding, it is very hard to know when/where will be a good time and place to meet. I don't know in advance; I doubt many people would.

What if I plan to meet someone in Ocean Bar at 7 P.M. and then receive an invitation to a private cocktail (or they receive the invitation).....it would be very bad if there was no way to contact eachother.

I started a roll call that never got a response from anyone on my cruise.

However, we did a cruisetour, with the land tour first. We got along well with several members of our land tour, and continued to socialize with them (at shows and in the Crows Nest) during the cruise. We also got along well with the table mates we met on the cruise.

My point is that, while it would be nice to get a reply to the Roll Call, it isn't necessary.

Have a great cruise!

???? Take another look at my post. You may have read it too fast. I said I didn't see where you would have to give out an email address or committ to meeting after the muster drill. Personally, I could not committ to meeting after the muster drill either. There are other solutions, but you must be interested in doing so.

Idog's idea of a hotmail address is excellent.

Rather than get into 'didn't you see I said I could not commit to meeting after Life Boat Drill etc'...........

The only thing of value I can add is it isn't likely I would be bothering to keep reading and posting to this thread were I 'not interested.'

I seem to be missing something here. Why would you need private email to arrange something? What sort of privacy issue would there be in arranging it on the Roll Call threads? It's not like there are going to hoardes of undesirables who are going to come to the Crow's Nest at 10:00 Sat morning (for an example) if that's when you and someone else choose to meet.

As for not being able to get in touch with someone to cancel, aren't CC G2Gs tentative anyway? Of the "I'll come if I can" nature? If it were a firm commitment, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable saying "sorry, you were only if nothing better came up and something better has" anyway. With a "tentative" agreement to meet - at a time when it shouldn't inconvenience anyone too much, where's the difficulty?

And doesn't the ship have phones in the room? Is there not a cabin-to-cabin communication system of the nature of hotels - where a switchboard operator will ring someone else's room without revealing the number?

TidePrideGA you made a good point with there is no need for email with the Roll Call board.

I am not a fan of the meeting after the life boat drill either but it is easy to set up other ways.

One method is set a time and place. It doesn't have to be a long meeting or a party. I have met a couple of people this way.

Sails, since you were looking for a method this is a method that has worked for me. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe you have posted that you and DH go to the Ocean Bar and usually sit at the bar before dinner. If someone wanted to meet you they could look for you in the Ocean Bar. Odds are they will find you. I have told people that we go to the Casino Bar both before and after dinner. This might not be true every night, but 90 % of the time it is. Those looking for me had no trouble finding me. Pictures, emails etc are not needed. All they had to do was ask a person if they were Gizmo from CC. Even if they ask the wrong person, it could be used as a ice breaker, to start up a conversation and make friends with someone new.:)

Good idea, Gizmo. Yes. We go to Ocean Bar every evening.....unless we are invited to a private gathering.

Tide Pride.....

Yes. Telephone is an excellent idea. However, one needs to know the person's cabin number in order to call. Even just knowing their 'real name' is not good enough as the Front Desk will protect privacy and will not give out people's cabin numbers. Rightly so, IMO

I think trying to meet on the day of embarkation is far to stressful for most people anyway. Some are beat from traveling. Others want to explore the ship (I wanted to show the entire ship complete with all the bars and clubs to my son, on his first cruise as an adult). Embarkation, muster drill and sailaway just uses up all the time before those that have an early dinner seating.

On the past 2 previous roll calls we agreed to meet the NEXT MORNING at 10:00. We met on the aft Lido deck right next to the starboard stairway to the deck above it. The perfect spot on Spirit class ships (should be the same on the Vista Class of HAL). There's a bar there so one can get a drink if they so desire, through the doors to the buffet to bring out some breakfast or coffee or just sit and watch the sea. Everybody from our roll call (approx. 18) showed up at 10:00.

As it turned out, almost all of us (through discussing it previous to the cruise on the roll call) had reserved the Randi's Happy Horses excursion at the Mazatlan stop, so we could all discuss it then and there. We all had a great time with Randi as a CC group.

Met some wonderful people. Families with kids (very well behaved :) ), teachers on vacation, honeymooners, and DINKS. We all had a great time. Kept bumping into one another throughout the cruise.
