How are upgrades decided by NCL?

Had friends just return off the Epic last week.

They booked a family mini suite for a cheap rate the 1st of December.

When checking in at the port they were upgraded to a 2 bedroom Haven at no extra charge.

They are still Bronze as this was just their 3rd NCL cruise.

I hope when I board the Epic next month I get upgrade from my balcony cabin.

Wishful thinking!

We were on the Jan 11 sailing on Epic. Booked the two bedroom Haven. Three days before sailing NCL offered a free upgrade to the DOS. We turned it down because we really needed two bedrooms. It's rare, but big upgrades happen :-)

Names are picked out of a hat and then straws get drawn. It's quite arbitrary.

I thought that the bookings were put in a pile, the staff danced naked round them, widdershins, at midnight muttering incantations - shows how you can be misled by the internet...

Whatever methodology they use, your friends received a very rare and special surprise upgrade at the pier. They should consider themselves extremely fortunate. That type of thing does not occur with great frequency regardless of latitudes status or any other criteria. The upgrade gods were smiling on them that day for sure!

That's an awesome upgrade! We were also on the Epic last week in a balcony, but there was no upgrade for us, nor did we anticipate one. We were just happy to be out of the cold in Wisconsin!

Enjoy your cruise!

the best upgrade I've ever seen was last year on a Panama Canal cruise out of LA on the Star. The person booked the cruise the night before for a guaranteed inside cabin. The get to the port and find out that they've been moved into the Category SA...Deluxe Owner's Suite.

LOL that is some upgrade. I never have luck like that, we booked a BX Guaty on our next cruise coming up in 67 days and I bet you dollars to donuts I will get what I paid for.

When we go to the casino I make my wife play 3 card poker until she gets a straight flush, happens every time, usually within a coupe of hours, just so I don't feel bad about the money I lose LOL

Last weekend, when we booked our Escape cruise with our PCC, we let her know that we were open to being upgraded (or maybe even up-sold) into one of the DOS. There are still two available for our sailing in a month!

Even in a perfect world .. if every MINI was overbooked, and every 2BR Have was empty, only a handful would get this upgrade. In reality, most if not all Haven suites are booked, especially the 2BR.

Your friends were very, very, very lucky.

In December we were upgraded at the pier from a balcony to Deluxe owners suite on the Epic. We were so shocked that we thought they made a mistake and we would be thrown out soon

We really enjoyed every minute. The haven restaurant was the best perk. Who knows why we were upgraded but it was a great surprise and we enjoyed every minute because we knew we'd never see the haven again
