When are upgrades offered? How far out?

I am currently booked on Adventure of the Seas out of San Juan 9/26/15. I have read that closer to the cruise if there are open rooms they will offer discounted upgrades....my question is..

1. When are these upgrades typically offered?

2. How are you contacted? Email/Phone/Mail

These are really considered upsells where extra money is involved and they definitely have to call you for that ;). Upgrades are free and they do not have to call you if you have automatic upgrade as a preference. We often find we have been upgraded when checking our reservation under my cruises. FWIW

So would it be safe to say....offers are typically within a month or so of sailing? I am happy with a balcony cabin, but if offered an upgrade to a JS or some other type of suite for the right price I would definitely entertain the offer.

Probably more like two to three weeks from what I have read. Also I have read on here that it is usually via an email, not a phone call like we got.
