Port of New York Ship and sailings 2017

Couldn't agree more. I love sailing out of NYC, I just wish they could swing some different ports or even better, a different ship...

 

Or longer cruises to get to more interesting ports. When they offer Pt Canaveral, Freeport and Nassau as an itinerary I just shake my head and wonder how they fill the ship.

They will all charge what the market will bear. Dont you think Carnival would double its prices if they could?

 

 

 

Interesting to compare pricing on Vista down the road to the newest RCCL ships.

 

 

We all know Carnival is the value proposition in cruising. Thankfully (for many reasons) Vista is not like the new "of the seas" builds, both in terms of features and costs. You sail Carnival and Princess, would you agree?

True, but sailing out of New York in the winter months means 3 or 4 days of cold sailing (bad weather aside). Carnival has one new ship coming, to put it in the northeast full time would be a waste.

Here, here! I'm sure it's possible I haven't traveled much or maybe I'm simple and easy to please, but I love going anywhere. Even the giant mall 90 minutes away is a fun day to me. Somewhere warm (and 60 and raining would still be considered 'warm' to me after this horrendous winter) and I'm there with bells on. I've been visiting where my grandmother lives in Florida dozens of times yet I'd jump at the chance to roam around St. Pete for a few hours anytime. If I am ever lucky enough to be able to stop by Nassau or Freeport a few times a year while cruising, I'd love it. I'd love being able to explore the off the path places and getting to know the area better.

 

Maybe instead of them using the FL, Nassau and Freeport itinerary so much, it'd be better to cut one of those out in favor of a longer time in another. I was looking at a Royal cruise that stopped in Key West and I know I've seen people say they love that port. Maybe a Key West and a long day or even overnight in either Nassau or Freeport so people had more time. From Baltimore we were only docked in Nassau for like 8 hours and from like 7 am to 1 pm in Freeport. We didn't dare venture much further than the port for Freeport.

You could have taken the local taxi service that dropped you off by the Casino and visited the small village nearby with all the craft shops and restaurants, spent a little time in the casino and still made it back to the ship in time. The taxi runs on a schedule.

I live in St. John's and it's a great cruising destination which Carnival does not visit often unfortunately. John Heald was here on the Legend in 2013 and he says he had a great time. If a NY cruise had the option of joining on in multiple ports (like several cruise lines do in Europe) they could easily come here and fill the ship a few times a year (St John's, Bermuda, NY and back would be awesome - get some sun, beach and shopping). We can't go anywhere unless we fly. It is expensive to fly to Florida (ofter $800) but we don't save a lot flying into NYC and then the cruises are more expensive and I'm not going to fly somewhere to cruise to Canada.

 

As for a newish ship, I'm wondering if Sunshine may go there for a while seasonally after Magic moves to Port Canaveral.

Our nine brands offer very distinct experiences. We don’t consider ourselves generally competing with NCL or RCCL. Having said that, Carnival Splendor operates out of New York on a seasonal basis with a great variety of itineraries. Our Cunard brand frequently sails in and out of New York on its trans-Atlantic crossings. And a several of our other brands have Eastern Seaboard/Canadian itineraries. is it to be inferred then, that there will be 'news' regarding the carnival brand's 'new york program'? because i infer that from your statement, and that of john heald yesterday on facebook. please let us know if we are to expect 'news' or just that splendor is returning. and if it is, can it be assumed it will with 2.0 as it's nearing it's 5 year drydock.

Ha...interesting. Showcasing it in NYC for the press only. A couple of sailings doesn't make it about NY.

 

i know. that doesn't count :)

I don't think the Sunshine is an acceptable substitute for the Splendor - if they want to add it and have 2 ships that would be okay. From what I've heard the Sunshine is an older ship (Destiny) that has all sorts of stuff loaded on to it. I've heard it's way too crowded and it gets really bad reviews that go way beyond the occasional one for the Splendor from someone who doesn't like the pink or hates that decks 3 & 4 don't go all the way through.

 

If the Sunshine is the only ship NYC gets - I won't be cruising on her. I'll be driving to Baltimore, I guess. I don't like the mega ships RCL & NCL have in NYC

i'm somewhat conflicted... i don't especially consider sunshine an 'upgrade', but carnival definitely does. it does have so many of the 'new features' in terms of the waterworks, ropes course, guys, blue iguana, sea dogs, jiji asian, bonsai sushi, havana bar, alchemy, the biggest serenity deck of the fleet, and the list goes on... carnival could definitely consider it an upgrade vs. splendor given all that, and prices it at a premium from port canaveral...

 

that said, it is indeed 'destiny' with a bunch loaded on, and at its renovated 102,853 GT, it carries the exact same 3,002 passengers at double occupancy that splendor does in its 113,300 GT... i don't really like that. regardless, it would be a 'show of confidence' in NY... personally, i'd rather they deploy magic seasonally, as it's also apparently slated for port canaveral, where sunshine also sails from...

 

the other equally plausible option is that splendor returns, likely with 2.0 upgrades, as it is about due for its 5 year drydock. again i'm conflicted because sunshine has so much of the 'new stuff', but splendor with an array of the 'new stuff' could be an equal or more preferable option.

I'm not waiting. Too many other options while they commit to do year round and then do a full reversal.

 

It's like Carnival enjoys giving their business to the competition as opposed to the competition fighting for it.

There's always the good old NCL Gem out of NYC.. she's a great size, great crew, one of our favorites. :D

 

When it comes down to it, Carnival is also charging way too much for the product they're sailing out of NYC. We did 9 days (San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Maarten & Samana) in a balcony on the Gem last year for less than we just paid to sail on the Splendor this coming June in an inside for an 8 day (Grand Turk, HMC, Nassau run) it's easy to see why people are going elsewhere.

Try it before you decide. When we went down to the "naming" ceremony and sleepover in New Orleans for the Sunshine, I was blown away with the Sunshine. Far exceeded my expectations. So much so, we are sailing her twice in the next year. I have sailed Splendor 3 times and would consider the Sunshine an upgrade for New York if it were to occur.

We have loved every single one of the CCL ships we have sailed on for one reason or another; some more than others naturally! (personal favorite is Spirit because I love spirit class, loved the colors, and we had the aft wrap balcony cabins on deck 8 with the seperate rooms! ;) ) As seen in my sig, we have sailed some ships 2,3 and 4 times. This is nice because it is like "going home" and we know where everything is, all the little "secrets" and many times have some of the same crew who recognize us! :) That being said, I would enjoy starting in on a different ship. Just for a little variety! :pSunshine would be welcome in NY! Sailed on her when she was Destiny; she was our lst CCL ship! Would LOVE to have Breeze in NY. :cool:

Thank you! Norwegian and Royal don't seem to have an issue filling their ships out of the NY market. Carnival is missing a huge opportunity here.

Yeah Quantum is high but Liberty is somewhat reasonable. And NCL has very competitive pricing on Breakaway and Gem. Carnival could compete very successfully here. But a marquis ship needs to be here. I'd even be thrilled with the Sunshine as a companion to Splendor.

I'm not too keen on the thought of cruising the Sunshine out of New York either. Mainly because of the crowding issues... Although it does make sense to have Carnival's most crowded ship (lowest passenger space ratio in the fleet - 27 square feet per passenger) based in NYC since most New Yorkers are used to living in crowded conditions. :p
