Setting out from the plaza , we headed down the broad street Lopez de Haro .

IMG_7015_zpsgesnwrkp.jpg

We were surprised to see half of a statue of John Adams , the second American President , in front of the Regional Government Office .

We had forgotten that we were in Europe , and that many people sleep in .

Making it to the older area we saw the Arriaga Theatre from 1890 . The building is older than the city that I was born in .

Looking back at the bridge

IMG_7032_zpsn6w4wkpk.jpg

Beware of trams in old town !

It's filled with narrow streets

IMG_7045_zpspkylbklb.jpg

And shops

IMG_7062_zpsnbsc1jln.jpg

We wanted to check out the ham shop

IMG_7050_zpsiipy6k3x.jpg

This ham was clamped in a meaty-evil looking device known as a Jamonera .

IMG_7052_zps1sjo1tsj.jpg

" The first jamones ibéricos were released for sale in the United States in December 2007, with the bellota hams due to follow in July 2008. The basic jamón ibérico is priced upwards of $52 a pound, and the bellota is priced upwards of $96 a pound, making these hams some of the most expensive in the world. "

Quote from Wikipedia :

Suddenly , the Chef's Table looked inexpensive . And now , I wished that we would have bought some !

Most of the shops didn't open until 10 , and some 11 . We went to the Gothic Santiago Cathedral ( 15th century ) , just as a bus arrived .

IMG_7054_zpsvycpa9sv.jpg

They left quickly and we went inside .

IMG_7059_zpsrxrwaxun.jpg

The light was nice on the building across the street where a local football fan lived .

IMG_7060_zpssr3kqnoo.jpg

Returning to the river we saw the San Nicholas Church ( 1756 ) .

This park was to the left of the church and the river to the left of the park

Heading North , we saw some blue skies and hills .

Ooops , almost forgot this photo of the cathedral's stained glass .

IMG_5162-001_zps9l75jv8d.jpg

We noticed a pair of shoes hanging out . I wonder if a tornado dropped the slide on him ? A closer look revealed a Coke can . Maybe he had too much to dream last night .

IMG_7088_zpsnz98g5ob.jpg

Next up : City Hall circa 1892

IMG_7095_zpselzcrvsc.jpg

And in the distance ... Zubizuri .

IMG_7096_zpsq3yss8wv.jpg

But next up - the funicular .

IMG_7109-001_zpspe9spnne.jpg

Waiting for the backward launch into the tunnel reminded me of Space Mountain in WDW .

But , in the men's room at the top of the hill....

IMG_7127_zpsa6es1oa3.jpg

it was more like ... Splash Mountain !

IMG_7126_zpshzv4fgsp.jpg

And in the stall ! What's wrong with this picture ?

IMG_7125_zps4howo2vu.jpg

I still haven't figured it out yet . I'm just glad that I didn't need it !

Joe, thanks ( I think) for these photos which might serve to remind us to always visit the nice American bathroom on the ship before stepping ashore...2,000 years of "civilization" and this is the designer's offering? The Romans way back in 55 B.C had at least somewhere to sit with constant running water.

The designer obviously didn't consider the late Saturday night visitors who may have enjoyed the local vino and whose balance and vision might be impaired.

And perhaps therein is the solution to the conundrum : Maybe it's an invitation , a blank canvas so to speak , for the patron artiste to decorate as he sees fit , in the ultimate form of a very personal abstract expression .

After our break , we needed some fresh air and Mt. Artxanda provided it . The view was great and it was noticeably cooler and very breezy .

IMG_7131_zpslb6web5a.jpg

I choose to hike down to the overlook

IMG_7162-001_zpsiedrsvac.jpg

Where 3 overlapping photos

yielded 1 nice panorama

IMG_714720Stitch20Bilbao-001_zpsqbpyhzhm.jpg

And the telephoto lens brought us in closer

to the Guggenheim .
