The SteakHouse

Do ships with a steakhouse have the steakhouse selections in the MDR? They do on Triumph (no steakhouse) for $20. It's just the entree upgrade, no appetizer or dessert upgrade. Steak was good, but not so good as the one I had in steakhouse on Magic. Anyway, another option if they offer it.

I believe so. I know the Breeze has both the steakhouse and the steakhouse options on the MDR menu.

Even if you were a steak eater, if you can't tell the grade difference between choice select or Prime, it's a waste of money.

We did it, we enjoyed it, but we wouldn't do it again. Especially at $35 on top of a meal you've already paid and tipped for. And the service? The food still comes on plates, served from the right. No big difference from the great service you usually get down in the dining room, where you tip around $2 a meal per person. Tip in the SH is $15, and included, per person.

First let me set the Tip in the SH is $15, and included, per person. I don't know where you got this information buy you are WRONG WRONG WRONG, Carnival states that the tip is included, but it IS NOT included in the $35 per person charge.

Email from me:

I know they say that the tip is included in the $35 Steakhouse charge or the $75 Chefs Table and as you know I always add more, but would you please tell me how much of that $35 or $75 goes to the tip, and how many share in it, is it just the servers or also the cooks.

Here is the answer from a very good friend of mine that has been a Steakhouse server for many years.

Server: This is the reality, my salary is 1140. $ a month without tips, a cook has 800- 1000$ a month. If we serve 2 pax a night or 100 there is no difference because we do not have a percentage of the 35. If it were true as ccl is saying that tips are included it would fluctuate month to month, right? So the additional tips are split evenly between server cooks dishwasher. Other company is giving percent of cover for servers so there u can really say it is included! Would I stay away from family and real life from home for 7000$ a year? Ironically I am, for 10000. My friends are working regular jobs, and go back at home in the evening to their kids and dog.

This one would probably be our last or maybe one more contract! I saved money I saw places met good people like u , but have no real life, my back is hurting like I’m older than my 55 y old mom, plus for 2 y now I developed allergy for dust and mold from our wonderful ac system. I know u just asked me a simple question and I let my frustrations go on u ... I am looking forward to my tomato garden, simple life, cooking and walking my dog/ kid, soooon!

Server : Well the tips are not included at all although the company promotes it that way !!! We get the salary and from the extra tip that guest leave us. Extra tips go to servers and the cooks. I don't know to tell you exactly how many people total since it is not the same on every ship.

That being said I still eat in the Steakhouse at least twice each cruise ( I sure it has been well over 100 times) , I enjoy the people, service and the food. True this is not for everyone, some because they can't tell the difference between the foods and some because they are too cheap.

I always leave a cash tip to the server equal to 20% of the check.

There's two thought processes here. First one is I can get a free meal in the MDR so way I'm paying money to eat. The 2nd one is, It's a great time, and a good deal. I worked 8 years in one of the finest steakhouse's in america, and I can tell you this meal compares to that, and a comparable meal would run 250-350 dollars in most cities in america. the bone in ribeye alone would cost you 20-30 dollars to buy in a butcher shop, if you could even find USDA Prime beef in your town. I'm my old restaurant the bone in rib eye would be 55 dollars.:D

Seriously people go have a good time, see what the good life is all about. I have an 11 day booked, I will eat there at least twice

I'm not sure where some of you live, but it sure sounds like you got some great options/pricing for steaks!

I live in NY, and if I go to Outback Steakhouse, and order the Bone-in Ribeye, it costs $27.99. At Outback.

So for me, $35 extra for the meal I get in the Steakhouse is very necessary. I prefer the ambiance better, the quality is very good TO ME. I have to pay much more than $35 to get the same quality steaks that size where I live.

The same cruiseship steakhouse meal can be had for about $35 on land but not include tip.

Carnival, Princess, NCL and RCCL (only ones I tried) steakhouses are not the same quality or selection that you get at $100 per plate steakhouses on land. They are good but not that good. I say they are $40 per plate at best.

Really? At which steakhouse? Even at an Outback or a Longhorn, I can't get multiple appetizers, salad, a good to very good quality filet mignon with multiple sides, and a large dessert for $35 without tip.

Let's see what it costs at Outback for a similar-size meal:

Small appetizers of a small order of coconut shrimp ($4.69) and an order of bloom petals ($4.00): $8.69

Salad: $3.99

Victoria's Filet (9 oz) with two sides: $24.49

Sautéed mushroom topping: $2.99

Desert Sampler: $8.99

20% tip

That's $58.98 with tip ($49.15 before tip) but without taxes for a meal of a similar size (but lower quality and service) to what you get in the steakhouse for $35 flat. Even if you only order one appetizer, it's still $45 before tip and taxes. Don't forget that you're only limited on the number of entrées, not everything else, in the steakhouse. If you had room for it, you could get every appetizer, salad, side, and dessert on the menu. I have no idea where someone would put it, but they could get it if they want it. Try doing that for $35 in a land steakhouse.

Prime beef is prime beef. That being said, some are better than others. When I worked in a steakhouse, serving prime beef, I ate at least one steak a week for years. Every steak was good, but about every 5th steak, was amazing. Some cows just taste better. It's really out of the restaurants hands. It's a government employee that does the grading. He has about 15 seconds to decide if it is select choice or prime. I'm sure some gets through as prime that should be choice and vice verus.

The steaks I had on carnival were prime beef, and just as good as anything served in a prime steakhouse here on land

How any service restaurant disburses thier tips is irrelevant to me personally. I leave my tip and go. If it's included I til and go.

How that money gets to the server is the servers responsibility. If what you are saying is true, Carnival is keeping all tip money. If I were a server and knew my tip money was going to the company, you wouldn't find me there.

The fact that the company is lying states it all, if what you're stating is true.

I think if I were to do it, I would only do it on the first night with the free bottle of wine. Santa Carolina wine, red or white is ok in my books. I do eat beef, just not much of it. Large portions like 8oz of it would likely get half left on my plate.

The other options on the menu, ie; the lobster (photos I have seen, look kind of puny), or the chicken and pasta, just dont look appealing to me. The menu in general is not terribly appealing to me. Therefore the only way I would spend 35.00 for the experience would be with the free bottle of wine. this just me though. Others rave about it, and some folks go there every night of the cruise (cant figure that though, the menu is already boring first night for me)

The lobster tail is actually VERY LARGE. It is a 10 ounce tail which would come from a 2-2 1/2 lb lobster. I've eaten at the steakhouse 3 times and have ordered it every time. It's also cooked perfectly and melts in your mouth. Keep an open mind and, if you have the extra $35 to take a chance, I suggest you consider a visit to try it out. There are all sorts of surprises to make sure your meal is anything but boring. If it would take away spending from something that you know you enjoy -- then stick to what you know will add to YOUR experience!

I agree it is not relevant. There have been many threads on this subject with claims of truth on both sides. I myself had a conversation with a server, asked the question and was told they get the tips, case closed for me. In the end, it is about the meal and the experience, which we have found better than anything else on the seas.

I was told by the steakhouse manager that the tip was approximately $5.00. That would make sense because that would be 16-17%. On one of our trips we tipped an extra $5 per meal and our waitress actually came back and clarified with us that we were aware that a tip was included. I have always found that the staff in the steakhouse are very attentive, polite, and professional. It would be hard to keep up that level of service if they weren't rec'ing tips.

Never understood why Carnival makes this subject so much of a mystery.

They say the tip is included but will not tell us anything else.

When we go to the steakhouse if service is better than average we will leave extra if not we dont.

Where do you put the second dinner?

That's kind of what I want to know, too, lol. When I go to the steakhouse, I'm over-stuffed even when I get only the ice cream and don't finish any of the courses. I can't imagine having an entire 2nd dinner, since I'm stuffed for hours and hours after eating at the steakhouse. To me, the quality of a lot of the stuff in the MDR is usually so questionable, I wouldn't want to double-stuff myself for it. I MAYBE could see going for some soup if it was a chilled soup night, since the mango cream, strawberry mint cream, black cherry cream, and gazpacho soups are so delicious. The rest of it? Nope.

Thank you for the response. I actually did consider it on my last cruise on the Freedom, but ended up cancelling my reservation for the first night. The lobster tail is the one thing that I would consider ordering, and I was just sort of discouraged by the one or two photos of it that I had found online. I have no problem with the price though. And your description makes me want to try it some day.

Sadly my next cruise is on the Victory; No steakhouse:(

But there will be another cruise next year! Thanks, and I will try to make it on a ship with a Steakhouse.:)

We went for the anniversary of DH's brother and SIL. It was very good, and worth $35, but we enjoy the MDR and won't be going back unless it's another special occasion.

DH loves steak. I like it. I don't remember what he had, but I had the surf and turf. It was delicious, and I was stuffed.

On our last cruise on the Pride we went to the Steakhouse a couple of times our waitress was super. We met her husband who was working the HMC large cabana we rented with some other folks. We saw her that night and my wife had a good discussion on how handsome her husband was. Well we liked them both so we tipped her $20 and she tried to give it back to me. I had to force her to take it. If I like waiters and I'm having fun with them I tip larger. The entire staff from the kitchen staff to the manager all try and treat you like family. I like to compare the experience to the steakhouse at the Borgata casino which is good but not the friendly experience you get at Davids. We dined with some friends from the casino and we had a lady next to us that was in a little rascal chair. The restauant manager and I fought over who was going to park the chair but I conceded to the manager who promtly ran the thing into the railing. You won't see that kind of fun at Ruth's Kris or Outback! I never get tired of the shrimp cocktail, spinach salad, Surf n Turf and chocolate sampler. Already drooling and ready for our August 15 cruise!

The steak isn't that good IMHO. I rate it as a $25 steak that would include 2 sides, figure a $6 app and a $6 desert so yeah you are right I will give it maybe $37 before tip. But since the meal includes a tip, it makes it a pretty good deal.

Its not much better than a Texas Roadhouse (which I will eat all day no problem) or similar place.

If you find it to be much better than I find it, then more power to you. That makes the Steakhouse all the more worth it for you and thats a good thing. Serious. I am glad that you find it to be top notch as you should expect no less.

My only experience with a Carnival steakhouse was good but not awesome. They did not have Porterhouse and they refused to good my Spiced Ribeye to medium rare. (serious, that blew my mind)
