Picture waste?

I just wish folks would realize they are under no obligation to pose for all the pictures the photographers want to take. I hate when there are 1500 folks waiting to get off the ship and everybody is stopping to get a picture made on the gangway that they have no intention of buying.

yes i hate this. but i don't blame the people getting off the boat. i blame the photographers that stop everyone and force them to take pictures. sometimes it is quicker and easier just to take the picture then to stop and explain to them no i don't want a picture.

We no longer have any formal photos taken on the ship. The last ones were from January 2014 & my SO said that's it. We bought 2 photos for above our entertainment center. We're not changing or getting any better looking (he says) so we're happy with the ones we got.

We say "no" to the gangway photos as we have no intention of purchasing them.

The waste aspect of this doesn't bother me. What does is having a hard time finding pictures and the crowds looking through them. Hard to believe there's not a more automated way of finding and reviewing pictures.

I liked the way they did it on NCL. Each cabin had a photo binder number on their S&S card. You would go to the photo gallery and find your binder in a bookcase and you could go through it without having to look at walls of pics, or having other people handle yours.

I think what others have said about people buying more pics if they're already printed is most likely true, otherwise not printing them to save money would be a no-brainer when you consider all the recent small cutbacks.

We used the facial recognition kiosk on the Carnival Dream and it was a mess. We couldn’t find all of our photos. Also many photos of other people kept showing up.

The Disney Dream it was easier to find your photos because they were all printed out, like Carnivals, and were all put in a folder for you to look at. Before photos are taken you had to give the photographer your card. Disney had the photo thing done very well. However our 4 day Disney Dream cruise with three passengers cost more than $400 more than our 7 days Carnival Dream cruise with four passengers.

It’s the passengers that want all of the photos taken. No one is forced to have their photo taken. You don’t have to have any photos taken if you don’t want to.

We like the photos and will always purchase some. We don’t spend much money in the bars or casino so we can us some of that for photos.

On my first cruise ever the GF and I were suckers and we took a million pics. (Okay not a million but we took a lot). One of the camera guys that we were hamming it up to just so happened to be the cash register guy in the photo area. On that day in which all the photos are laid out and all the passengers are there we ended up choosing 2 of the photos to purchase.

He remembered us from taking all of the pics, told us to grab all the others that were of us (about 28 over the course of a 7 day cruise) and he only charged us for original two that we had selected.

We slipped him a $20.

I'm certain we were not the only passengers he did this for.

In a business I own, I buy ink by bulk. I can print an 8x10 photo for a few pennies if that much. Most people that are used to buying ink cartridges from Walmart think it is so expensive and takes so much to print an 8x10. CCL is buying their ink by the gallon or maybe even five gallon jugs. The photo paper comes on a large roll. My print media is 30 inches wide and the roll is 150 feet long. Big price difference than buying ten sheets at a time from Walmart. With one machine I have it costs me 25 cents per square inch to print and that includes the paper.

Disney doesn't even print all the pictures. They scan your card when they make the picture and you look them up using your card. Some will be printed and placed in your folio, but not all.

Even if Carnival does recycle, it seems a crazy labor and supply intensive waste to print all those pictures. I would have bought more but I couldn't find them when I went to look. I didn't want to spend an hour or more rifling through thousands of pictures. Now I know to pull my family's pictures every day and have them held at the desk.

We just tell the photographers no thank you.

Ditto! We also say "No thank-you". It saves us, and those behind us, time on the gangway getting off of the ship. And, since we don't have to spend time looking for photos that we probably won't buy anyhow, we can spend that time elsewhere on the ship. By not having photos taken, we reduce the waste of photos that are thrown away. If we want our picture taken, we'll ask a fellow passenger to take it for us with our digital camera. If we like it, we can have it printed when we get back home. If we don't like it, it's easy to delete. ;)

Hello, just off a first cruise on the Magic here and am wanting to comment on the picture waste I witnessed.

I saw everyone getting their pictures taken and we ourselves posed for and bought quite a few, but I was completely taken aback by the massive stacks and stacks of photos at the end of the trip that were just going to go into the garbage bin.

It seemed an enormous waste of photo paper and ink or chemicals.

I know the carnival higher ups do not spend their days reading these posts, but is there any way to get them to consider a less wasteful method for selling photos?

In this digital age, I don't understand why the pics cannot be viewed online or at special kiosks and then only actually print the ones you wanted to purchase.

When we did our dolphin encounter in Grand Cayman we were directed to a computer screen where we had to select which photos we wanted to purchase and those were printed out so there was no waste.

Perhaps there could even be a channel on the stateroom tvs where you could peruse the pics in your room and make note of its number and then have only those printed.

We need to all work together to protect our beautiful planet for our children and this just seemed so wasteful especially when you multiply it by all the ships on the fleet.

Almost every cruise ship in the world burns the leftover photos in the ship's incinerator. The heat from the incinerator is used to heat water for your shower/bath and to produce steam for the laundry and galley.

The ashes from the incinerator are offloaded ashore and processed by a hazardous waste company.

If we didn't burn the photo paper to heat the water, we would be forced to burn more fuel to do it.

The cruise lines that have switched to digital sales of photos have seen their photo revenues drop by 50%. The rest of us are not going there.

I'm well aware of what my children need, thank you. Did you enjoy the Magic?

We have always bought at least one, sometimes several per cruise. I can appreciate everyone's concern for the environment, but I don't take a great photo and appreciate having several to pick from. And strange as this may seem we actually enjoy the process of looking for our pictures.

"Sir, would you like to sign up for a Visa card?" Or "Sir, would you like a refill of your ice water?" Or "Sir, stop for your memorable photo op?"

All of these are met with a courteous response from me and then I move onto what I want to do.

BTW, the answers are:

No thank you!

Usually yes please, depending on how close to finishing my meal.

And finally, NO THANK YOU!! Which is followed by me holding up my hand and continuing my forward progress. Those of you behind me in line, you are welcome. This includes the welcome aboard pic prior to the gangway.

Yep..it's a waste...they shouldn't take so many freaking pictures!

Especially when you are trying to get off of the ship. On our last cruise they has as many as three photo stops per port, making the lines long and my patience short. Is not one picture enough?

If we believe the environmental zealots none of us should be on ships at all. They claim that cruise ships are the most fuel inefficient forms of transportation. And since they're not A-B transportation - just leisurely cruising - they have no right to exist outside of geographic anomalies like Norway.

If you are looking at it from an environmental perspective, the zealots are probably right. Cruise ships are disastrous and it isn't just the photo (or food!) waste. But then, you also shouldn't fly in airplanes for non-essential reasons (like vacations), and resorts generally shouldn't exist. It is best if you stick to sustenance farming in your own backyard.

So you have to pick and choose your battles. And it seems like cruise ships COULD easily eliminate the photo waste, and some of the food waste. Reduce is higher up the chain than recycle is.

Disney also uses kiosk systems and facial recognition. Though they still print a lot of pictures it's not as many. I've never understood why they print all those pictures, it's so wasteful.
Kinda of an interesting side note, they do this while you are in the parks as well. They have radio tracking on your magic bands, if you have them, and any photos that are taken of you on the rides while you are wearing your band get attached to your account. Great for business I assume. When you don't even realize that your picture is being taken, you aren't going to buy it, until you see it on your account.

I would love to see the system we pre-purchased the digital rights to all pictures at Disney World for $169 come to the ships; however, I doubt that it will as picture sales are the second highest source of on board revenue according to JH. Bottom line is what they are doing is working out well for them. The program they are trying on the Pride does have a digital aspect where you get unlimited digital pictures but it is around $350.

I hate searching for the pictures. I wonder if they are worried if they put them on TV or kiosks that people will just take pictures of the pictures. I have actually seen people doing that on the ships. One lady laid out her pictures on a table in the picture area and took pictures of all,of them using her cell phone.

Yes, we should all work together to protect our beautiful planet for the children and maybe we should you expand that to protecting our marine mammals from slaughter and abuse so that people can do "dolphin encounters".

See:

https://dolphinproject.net/

and if you want to see how they get these dolphins you might want to watch this documentary:

http://www.thecovemovie.com

Once you educate yourself about and stop supporting dolphin abuse and slaughter you can come back and preach to us about photo materials waste. :)
