Beach in Curacao

We rented a car via Avis. The drive to West Point where all the beaches are is approximately 30-40 minutes. There are more than a dozen beaches within a few miles of each other. Cas Abou was probably the biggest beach we saw but we ended up at BigKinip since it was secluded and that is what we were looking for.

The dirt road off the main road is absolutely shocking to Casa Abou. The last time we took it we had two punctures and took most of the day to get it repaired. It was a Avis car hire and when we got the space saver spare tyre from under the car we found it also was flat with a puncture.

A nightmare, never again, far cheaper to get a taxi - don't take the risk !!!!

Having read that cab fares to some of the nicer beaches were $40 or $50 one way, we opted for Sea Aquarium Beach which is pretty close to downtown. It was about 10 minutes by cab and the fare was cheap. Going down, we split the cab with another couple and it was less than $10 each. Coming back we had a van full of people and it was less than $5 per person.

It is crowded especially early on. We found a spot under an umbrella with 2 chairs and paid $10 or so. People arriving later had a tougher time getting chairs.

It is a protected area with a seawall between the beach and the ocean so the water is very calm. There are lots of places to get a drink or something to eat. Beer, pizza, ice cream, you name it.

It's far from the nicest beach I've ever been to but it's easy and reasonably priced.

Don't let the cab fare scare you away from a beautiful beach....try contacting someone for a tour and maybe do it that way with other people....you can't compare seaquarium to cas abou or any of the other beaches....

We don't get to port until 1:00. I'm not thrilled with what I've read about Seaquarium, and AIs are out because we get there so late. What is the closest nice beach? This is the one port I'm really stumped at.

Pirate bay is close to port and only $5 per person cab. Better than Mambo beach.

Just beware that the beaches out to the west can be virtually empty during the off season (before Thanksgiving). We have rented a car and driven out to some of those beaches to snorkel and often find ourselves totally alone. Why this can be desirable, it is also a little scary when you are in the middle of nowhere with no folks. And we have often found the rest room facilities locked-up prior to the busy season.

The emptiness of the beaches is what we were looking for. It was an amazing day. Can't wait to be back

Curious - we've planned on going to Cas Abou but haven't made our car rental reservations yet. Did Avis have the car at the cruise dock area, or did you have to take a cab to the airport to get it?

Avis has an office directly at the cruise port however I do recommend you reserve in advance since when we were there they only had about 4 cars and we're not accepting walk in rentals
