Live on the Odyssey

We are on the Odyssey now having left Kos today but have not seen the news so can't comment on that.

We were told that 150 refuges per day are arriving from Turkey, around the port you could see a few makeshift camps, maybe 30 people in total.

The park near the castle had more tents but hard to comment on numbers as we did not look too hard.

The greatest number of people were queing for temporary entry permits, numbers well above 100 plus but no other clear signs of what must be a huge problem.

It is interesting that it became a tender port, not docked as per plan, greater control options perhaps?

Caviar in the surf, in the pool, this pm, standing room only, nice to watch from the sky bar.

On the Seabourn front excellent food, wine and service but that is a given

Thank you for replying to my query about Odyssey's Dec. 3 sailing. I am traveling with friends (five women and 1 very happy gentleman escorting his harem aboard) and looking forward to seeing many more friends, officers and staff on Odyssey!

Sophie is great, we had the pleasure of sailing with her when she was an Assistant CD under David E, and Nick Hale. She is very personable and genuine (unlike a few others but not dropping names) and for those, like my wife, who like Zumba she had regular classes. So glad she will be on for both our December segments.

Mr Fudge, if I could trouble you, can you also find out who is the CD for September 19th? We will be on-board for 39 days then so I am sure it will change during the various segments but curious. Thank you in advance.

Day 5

Arrived on the Greek Island of Kos bright and early, a tender service awaits to transport those who wish to explore

.

We had a brief walk around Kos, it was sad to see so many dinghies in the dock area where migrants have arrived, there were a few around the dock but not so you would notice, Kos has made the main news because of the problems.

The Master of the ship:

For those of you who have sailed with Captain Dexter, this is his last cruise as a Captain of the ship. He has accepted a three year contract to monitor/train younger officers, in other words he jumps on and off ships as a quality control Captain, one of the nicest guys I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Today Mrs. Fudge ate at the pool grill, Mr. Fudge ate at the Colonnade, both enjoyed quality food with the usual great service.

The weather is still very hot, but the Champagne and beer makes it tolerable!

If there is one thing Seabourn have got right it is "Caviar in the surf" On the pool deck, bottles of chilled Champagne and caviar are served to the guests, what a fantastic way to finish off a day, well done Seabourn.

We set sail for Izmir, this evening we have the pleasure of the senior security officer joining us in the Colonnade for our evening meal. Tomorrow evening we have opted for in suite dining.

I am a big fan of the most affable Captain Dexter and so wish him well as he moves into his new role which you say is a 3 year commitment. There is no better Seabourn MDR table host, in my opinion.

He did mention last month that he would also be in Seattle this fall working on the bridge design of Encore- which goes to show how valuable he is. He will make sure that it's done right!

That said, I am absolutely sure our paths will cross again. And with that steel trap of a memory, he will pick up right where we left off.

Happy sailing!

It is a real pleasure to read your upbeat reports, Fudge.

Regarding Captain Dag, I suppose with the new ships coming onstream, and maybe the odd Captain retiring or moving on he might come back to Seabourn. I have never cruised HAL, but my impression of that line is that Dag's personality would be more suited to the ambiance of Seabourn than HAL?

Very much so. He likes to do nice things for passengers and crew such as trading booze for fresh fish when coming across fishing boats or using the swimming pool in the Legend as a holding tank for the lobster he got to serve the crew for a crew party. I don't think either of those would fly on HAL.

Day 6

Another early rise, Mrs.Fudge sent Mr. Fudge for early morning coffee at Seabourn Square, he does as he is told of course.

A delightful breakfast in the Colonnade followed by a short walk around the harbour, back on board for more eating and drinking! Our daily exercise today was shuffleboard, not that strenuous but enjoyable all the same.

Lunch came ever so quickly, Indonesian cuisine in the Colonnade, there was a beef curry which was delicious, bearing in mind we are also having curry for our "in suite dining" this evening, can you eat too much curry?? Mrs. Fudge had her second hot desert, what is not to like with this cruise line?

Somebody asked about the CD for the cruise beginning 19th September, it will be Heather, you seasoned Seabourn cruisers will know her surname.

Mrs. Fudge has a generous on board allowance and will make a bee line for the boutique this evening, there is a 50% sale Friday so she may be tempted to wait? Mr. Fudge is grateful his credit card is safe on this occasion.

We had a lovely "in suite dining experience" the food arrived on time, it was very relaxed, a nice change from dressing up for dinner.

Almost the end of the cruise and Seabourn has great big thumbs up from us. Obviously there are differences between cruise lines however, its really all down to personal preferences, the crew for us has made all the difference, fantastic service all round, this will not be our last cruise with Seabourn.

We have set sail for Molyvos, Lesvos, Greece, looking forward to the officers on deck special pre dinner event Friday evening. and dancing under the stars. Are we having fun yet? Yes we are.

Good to read that you're also having a great cruise Charlie57. Stock the Boat?

Fudge thank you for your updates. I always enjoy 'Live From' threads and when it's a Seabourn first-timer who is clearly having a very good time, it's even better.

I would like to add my own +1 to Wripro's post above about Capt Dexter. He will indeed be missed. Our best ever SB cruise also had him at the helm. But life is about change, and I wish him all the best in his new role.

Fudge,

Thank you for you wonderful posts about your and She Who Must Be Obeyed's maiden Seabourn cruise. I always enjoy reading real time accounts of cruises and can vicariously cruise with you. As your cruise comes to a close I will offer my advice for the soon to follow Seabourn withdrawal. -- book another cruise or at least put down an open deposit before your debark!

Yes! When Mr and Mrs Fudge return to their suite this afternoon, the dreaded brown luggage cover will be on the bed.

The best cure for this horrible sight is book another/open deposit.

Thank you for the update on the Sept 19th CD - I appreciate you taking the time to inquire. We have sailed w/ her before, she has a great voice and puts on a very good show, but as a CD we found her to be our least favorite.

Was she on Sojourn along with Sophie and Jan, world cruise 2014 segments?

Yes - she was on the first segment which we were on, (when Jan had to leave and David E. took over joining in Hawaii), and I am sure stayed on for additional segments. At that time was the 2nd Assistant CD, but we had her as the CD on a subsequent cruise.

Right. We boarded in Hong Kong. We concur with your opinion.

Actually, we find her to be not only talented, but extremely hard working. She has original ideas, takes the initiative to implement them and is committed to making the ship's events special and memorable. She is also very visible and social. She has a direct communication style that I find refreshing, but I suspect it may put off those who prefer a more indirect, softer approach.
