When cruising in and out of Europe, wouldn't the crew prefer to receive (extra cash) tips in euros, so they can spend when they get off the ship in ports? Extra cash tipping in US dollars wouldn't do them much good if they will be sailing in and out of Europe for several months?

 

They may spend that money on board, where stuff is usually in USD. They may also have a way to deposit that to their account. Getting Euro coins (there are no bills smaller than 5) might be a pain. Make it easy on yourself and stick with USD singles.

We are doing a repo/transatlantic from US to Europe, then doing their first European round trip as a B2B. Should we plan to tip (extra) in euros the entire time?

 

You can tip either in USD or in Euro. So the currency wouldn´t really matter. On our TA we talked with our cabin steward as usual... When he said that he has a couple of hours off in Malaga (first port in Europe coming from the US) he was more than happy that we gave him some Euros. In your case - as your going to the US and are from the US - it might be easier to tip in USD.

I asked the guys on board what currency they wanted. One picked US$, another picked Euro's and the third, sterling (we sailed out of UK). If you tip in dollars they will be able to exchange on board. I would tend to tip in the currency of the departure port, because that's where they're likely to go to a bank to send money home.
