How much wine is too-much wine?

Recommended Posts

Just as the title reads...

Since we have an inside cabin this cruise, no UBP for us :( Plus, we are sailing with our DD7 so won't have a lot of time for daytime drinking.

What is the most amount of wine bottles have you brought on board at one time with NCL?

Also, if someone can share how much a bottle of Riesling is in the stores in Miami would be appreciated :)

I'm confused. You say you won't have much time for drinking but want to know how many bottles of wine you can bring on? Lol. I've never heard of a limit but it would be $15 corkage fee per bottle. Also, when is your cruise? As the October promos now include UBP as an option for insides.

Do I just keep it in my Carry-on bag when entering the security area, or should I hand carry it on?

It really doesn't make a difference. We had 3 bottles in our carry-on last cruise. It was enough for us however, we also had a drink card from the casino.

I've always brought wine on NCL cruises, that it's unlimited (albeit with a $15 fee), is an NCL feature I like. We lucked out in June, boarding the Jade in Venice we told them we had wine, and we were not charged. For me, NCL's wine is OK--but I'd rather go to a wine shop and get something that really sounds appealing to me.

On our cruise in August, my sister and I brought 4 bottles of wine. I have a little rolly cart that I used to carry miscellaneous items and simply had the 4 bottles in a carry bag. When we went through security at the pier terminal, as soon as the security staff saw the wine they took me over to a table they have set up for the corkage fee. I gave them my cabin number and they charged the fee to my cabin ($60 for 4 bottles).

We actually received a bottle from Guest Services during the cruise so I had one bottle that we didn't drink. On the last day I took the bottle to the bar near the Atrium/Guest Services (we were on the Breakaway). I received $15 credit for the unused corkage fee and they held the bottle until the morning of disembarkment. That morning, I went to the bar, they gave me the bottle, and off I went.

You'll need to take it out to get the sticker put on it (to show that you paid the fee for it). If you do have it in your carry on, just make sure it's easy to get out.

If you read the disclaimers that you are supposed to acknowledge when you do the online check in, you will see that NCL will take any alcoholic beverages from you that you have when you board. Most cruise lines say they do this, however we have taken a case of wine on board, which includes a bottle of port. We bring a bottle with us to the dining room, and pay the corkage through the dining room. I would check with NCL about what their current policy is.

I believe you also asked how much a bottle of Reisling is in Miami. As with any wine, you can find all price ranges. People who bring wine anywhere and pay a corkage fee are usually doing it because they want to drink a particular wine, not to save money. We are wine drinkers/collectors, and usually prefer to pay the corkage for bottles we have in our cellar that are on the wine list for exorbitant amounts of money, even when it is a $45 corkage, and order what they have.

We brought a whole case of wine on the Epic. We paid the corkage and saved a lot of money versus buying on board!

Does it really save that much money if you aren't drinking expensive stuff? Cause you have to buy the bottle, carry it with you, and pay $15. If the price of the bottle you are bringing is $15 then that means you are really paying $30 for the bottle. Could you not get a bottle on board for around $30 or a little higher? I'm only asking because I would like to know how it works.

I was also wondering about this as well. Is there a current wine menu list on cruise critic?

For me, a Canadian, a $15US bottle of wine, plus the $15 corkage once the exchange is done is about $40 (If I'm luck by then!). If I just buy a $30-$40 bottle on the ship using my OBC at a rate of 1.19, saves about $5 a bottle...plus the hassle of bringing them on board.

Hmmm, wine list anyone?

Found it: https://www.ncl.com/sites/default/files/WineList_Fleetwide_07092015.pdf

It says: An 18% gratuity and beverage service charge will be added at checkout.

So if I bought a bottle on the ship, I would be charged 18% on top of the $15 corkage fee I already paid? Or is that just for when they are sent as gifts to passengers?

If you buy wine onboard you pay for the bottle of wine plus the 18% gratuity. There is no additional corkage fee for wine you buy onboard. If you carry your own wine onboard, you pay a $15 corkage per bottle. No additional 18%.

The savings is there if you drink a lot of inexpensive wine or some expensive wine. For instance, I can get the Estancia Pinot Noir for like $20 at home, add the $15 corkage & that's $35. The wine list has it at $44 plus 18% - that's $52.
